There is a problem with the "sense of urgency" argument over Ben.
It stated that way almost as if every time Ben goes out and plays, he is 25-30, 350 yds, and 3 TDs. That just isn't the case. I know now I will get the obligatory, "Do you remember when they didn't have a franchise guy?" Damn right I do. And I think Ben is great. But the truth is he isn't that damn near perfect QB that you can just guarantee will play great week in and week out.
The point is I think the Steelers know this. They can sign a CB to 14 million and make you feel happy. But they don't win unless the stars they have play better at big moments, and Ben just hasn't played that great in the playoffs lately. So a lot of this the window closing stuff, does Ben know that? Will he work to improve his game in little areas, like not making a wrong read at the goal line, changing a play and getting picked?
I hear ya on that. Ben was great early in the season (part due to Coates playing well). Once he got injured, he was never the same. Don't know if he was still hiding and injury but his accuracy and even play calls from the line just never came back to him.
Or course I say that still giving high praise to Ben as I would take him over any QB in Steelers history not named Bradshaw and over most QB's in the league. I hate to see the years when he hangs them up. I remember the Cliff Stoudt, Mark Malone, Kordell, etc. years and don't want to go back there.
