I run 89 in the Ecoboost Ranger but the mpg is better than it is with 87 so it doesn't cost any more to use overall.
MPG with 93 is no better than with 89.

I need to play with this, averaged 22 MPG on the cross-country trip with the 5.0 Coyote just burning 87 and cruising 9 MPH above the posted speed limit. Next couple of tanks I'll try 89 and see if it makes a difference.

I reset the mpg display at every fill-up. I average 18.5-20 mpg in mixed driving.

Putting men on the ground is going to be hard to do in that part of the world because the Strait of Hormuz is very narrow and easily interdicted with mines. We replaced the Frigates and Mine Sweepers that we used to keep Hormuz open with in the 80s and 90s with the failed Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) platform. That will add a huge degree of difficulty to any seaborn invasion which will be necessary to actually defeat the Iranian Mullahs.

We can either smash them quickly with overwhelming force and merciless action or we can get embroiled in a years long quagmire. The former is cheaper in blood and treasure than the latter.

If allowed, meaning politicians move aside and don't interfere, the US military in all of its professionalism and training, would end this bull **** "war" in a matter of hours, maybe a day. This has been the frustration shared by anyone that has been engaged in a conflict for 50+ years, maybe 75.

How much does geography hinder us in a country much larger than Iraq?

Geography creates different problems in every theater of war operations. The point remains the same though, you don't win until you put boots on the ground and destroy the enemy. We bombed entire cities off the map in Germany and Japan and the war raged on despite overwhelming air superiority. Japan only surrendered because they knew the next nuke was going to hit the Imperial Palace and Tokyo.

Simple answer: to control the flow of most of the world's oil.
1. control of Panana Canal
2. control of Venezulean oil production and transportation.
3. control of Iranian oil exports and all oil transportation thru Gulf.

This leaves the Russians to sell to the Chinese and leaves only Nigerian and Canadian oil as significant global production "available".
