Here's the problem i have with draft analysis. With all the coverage of the draft and the gurus popping out of the woodwork, people seem to think that the draft itself is something to be won or lost and they forget that it is just a mechanism to add players to help your team win.
That's why you had people flipping out that the steelers traded what they thought could be a top 10 pick for Minkah. It shows you how out of whack it's become that people were outraged that the steelers added an already proven player at their biggest position of need instead of some unnamed player in next year's draft. Most could not name 5 guys in next year's draft but they were damn sure the steelers passed up on a sure firs hall of famer to get Minkah.
Just look at the impact Minkah has had. He's been good but he's not Polamalu good, not yet anyway. His impact shows just how badly this defense needed a reliable Safety. How many blown coverages have we seen in the previous 5 or so years? How many easy TDs given up not because a WR made some great play, but because he was uncovered while 2 steeler DBs point at each other wondering who was supposed to cover him.
I'm not going to pretend that i have the next draft class all mapped out. I don't. So right now I don't exactly know which guys would be best available in the 10-15 range which is likely where they steelers would have picked without Minkah. What I do know is Minkah is as good or better than any defensive prospect aside from Ohio State's Chase Young and there's no way the steelers would have a shot at him.
There was also the kneejerk reaction that the steelers needed that pick to draft the next franchise QB. There's no way that was happening. They expect Ben to play a few more years and these QBs are not guarantees.
