How much better wasn't Banner in comparison to Okorafor?

While I liked Banner's story and blocking in the running game, I think he gave up 1.5 sacks vs the Giants, and would have lots of issues vs speed rushers in future games.

Banner won the job over Okorafor. How close was the battle for the job between the two?

Tomlin said they were both above the line it was just that Zach was more consistent. I would think there wasn't a huge difference. I guess we will find out quickly.

As stated, sounds like the battle was pretty close. Chucks missed a few days to injury and that probably contributed to some consistency issues. Also, Banner lost some weight in the off season per reports. When we first talked about RT, I thought Chucks would win due to better agility. Banner surprised with the weight loss and improved agility. I do really love teh Zach Banner story and know he will come back strong. But, if Chucks plays well this year the tape on him will be there with none for Banner aside from the one game and one game is a limited data set to base decisions upon - good or bad.

Hard to compare when training camp was closed and there was no pre-season tape to evaluate. Kind of ****** to pick on Banner after he goes down with an ACL in week 1. If we had a span of 4 games with him getting whipped then I could give more credence to this discussion. We will find out about Chuks on Sunday.

I guess we are hoping Tomlin picked the wrong man to start the season at this point.

Chucks look like a depth type of player to me. I never saw much push from him in the running game or agility / technique as a pass blocker.

He sort of held his own when he had to play. As the stater he’s going to be tested and might need a lot of help from the TE.

I’ve got nothing against Banner. I like the guy. I also think he’s likely the slowest footed starting tackle in the NFL and felt he’d have issues as a pass blocker.

Without a pre season, is hard to say, but I’ll say it anyway. Feiler should have never been moved in the first place.

You came to this conclusion by all the tape you have seen from him? Were you privy to any film of training camp this year that everyone else didn’t see?

It doesn't matter at this point, Chuks is what he is. I'd bet he surprises us all a little. Like some have said, no privy to training camp and no pre-season to verify anything.

I just hope he is better than what DENVER has to throw at him.

At least Denver doesn't have Von Miller. They were 1A and 1B. That's how tight the race is. They are both starting caliber RTs, which is why Feiler was moved to LG.

I'd like to see Chukes execute those 2 level combo blocks that ZB got off in the last game!

I agree with this assessment. If Chuks was going to shine in this battle, I figured it'd be at pass protection. Other than consistency, Banner probably stood out with his ability as a run blocker, but your right about his foot speed. Nothing wrong with that either, it's a reason why the athletic tackles are drafted high and the ones who aren't are drafted lower.

The logic with Feiler moving to guard is the Steelers felt they had a future start at right tackle with either Banner or Chuks. It probably would have been a better move to leave Feiler on the outside and have Wis and Dotson compete for the starting job inside. IMO it's a lot easier to plug in a guy at guard than find a good starter at tackle.

Won;t be the first time Tomlin was dead wrong in playing inferior players.

well there were 2 sacks of Ben in the game and neither were credited to the guy being blocked by Banner....so you would be wrong again

Williams got the first sack and while Banner's man did pile on...he is not credited for anything

on the other sack, Banner's man pressures Ben, but he gets away and is sacked by the DT off the other side of the OL....

Had Chuks not been injured during camp, he probably would have won the battle. Banner earned the start. Played well especially in the running game. Pass pro was effective, and no Coach he didn’t give up 1.5 sacks of the 2 taken by Ben. Al gave up one and the other was a coverage sack.

Obviously you didn’t watch the game closely, because Feiler was mimicking Faneca on those guard pulls to the right and left. One of the reasons Snell played well.

Let's' get real, the Giants suck and this was an easy game to pass block in due to the large lead, Snell running the ball well. I saw Banners man tackle Ben at least twice. Call it what you wish.

Steeler Depot Review: OL — C+
It wasn’t a great night overall for the Steelers’ offensive line, but they got the job done in the second half as the Steelers pulled way for the win.
I was a bit concerned early with the likes of Stefan Wisniewski, Alejandro Villanueva, Maurkice Pouncey and Zach Banner struggling, but the veteran group turned it around.
Pouncey continued to have a few low snaps while Wisniewski looked overmatched against a stout NYG defensive line. The group got rolling in the second half though, helping Snell Jr. roll to a big night.
However, Wisniewski and Banner left the game with injuries and didn’t return. Here’s hoping Wisniewski is okay because David DeCastro is still banged up. It doesn’t look good for Banner.

Zach Banner has an NFL pedigree. His biological father is All-Pro tackle Lincoln Kennedy. Banner is bigger, longer, and stronger than his dad. He dropped to his lowest playing weight in the NFL ever in the 330 range. Dude was on fire this year.

AV is no longer a top level LT. This is going to be a position of need in the next draft.

Add Center to the list as well. Pouncey is in decline. You just can't get a really good free agent tackle. Big Al is a free agent next year. He might be better off at Right Tackle. Feiler is a free agent next year. I don't this we have the cap space to afford him.

Suddenly the OL is in serious trouble by 2021. DeCastro is still excellent, but he's getting up there in age. I'll wait and see about Hunt, but the draft reposts I saw said he had issues with movement.
