How long should the Steelers give Bell to sign the tag offer of 14.5 million?

C. Do you need it painted on your forehead? If they pull the tag, they forfeit any compensation for Bell next year as a FA. Stupid is as stupid thinks....

ok, but can they pull the exclusive tag and replace it with non exclusive? serious question.

The last day to apply any tag has expired Bleed, so no they wouldn’t be able to. If nothing is done by July 16th, Bell will be paid under the tag amount. Hopefully his mother will knock some sense into him and he signs before then.

Where did you hear that? Last I saw they were still about $5 million or so under. Sign the rookies and maybe a vet minimum player is all you get for that.

Hmmmm. I read an article this morning saying they are $7.7 million under. I also read one that said they were $6.5 million under. Who knows?

James and Bryant got raises for playing over a certain number of snaps in their first 3 seasons.

One more DUI and he could miss eight games. Not only is Bell overrated and not worth 14.5 million, but he's also a risk on and off the field, and a distraction. He needs to sign the deal, or the Steelers should pull it off the table

Since when does an athlete scheduled to make 14.5 million a year in a one year deal threaten to sit out the season or report late?

Dan Rooney would not stand for this.

BS to all of this.

HE is in control of whether the gets suspended and knows doing so will **** up his payday. He showed, last year, that previous actions would not affect his availability. Let me as you this. If he gets a DUI tomorrow and hasnt signed the tag, what do the Steelers owe him? Zero, right? If he signs the tag today and gets a DUI tomorrow, what happens? $14m+, right? Where is the advantage to the Steelers for him to sign it now?

Same with camp. He doesn't sign it and gets hurt jacking off, what do the Steelers owe him? What about a drive by shooting, you know, since he is into Rap (this is for AJ..). Zero, right? He signs and comes to camp and gets hurt, what do the Steelers owe him? $14m, right?

Suppose the Steelers get a lead on a good ILB player they can sign for $8m right now and a safety they can sign for $6m. They can pull the tag and do it, right? They lose a comp pick next year, but they are not stuck with Bell's cap hit. What can they do if he signs it now? They might as well not negotiate with those other two guys.

I dont see any advantage to the Steelers to have him sign the tag right this ******* minute.

Could've signed Lewis and Hyde for their 5 million/per each and still had almost 5 million left over.

$5m for a guy with 5 career touchdowns and only one year with more than 85 rushes+receptions? and it only took him 6 seasons to get to that point?

And then enough left over to sign a good lb or Mathieu.
I didn't say they would be better than Bell, but our defense would be better.

I'm saying that $5m for Lewis is too much.
Agreed, but so is 14.5+ million for Bell. The 5 million doesn't hand cuff you though. It doesn't necessarily have to Lewis, just pointing out they couldve signed two decent RBs and gone after Mathieu if they wanted for what the will pay Bell.

I wouldn't pull it from the table at all. We have offered it. Now will keep there until he signs it...whether its a week before the season starts or after week 10. The tag will be there for Bell to sign. Personally, I think it will play out like last season. If we pull it we lose out compensatory pick next off-season. It would be foolish to pull it at anytime now. We basically are all in with Bell this season. One(more year) and done.

While I understand where you are coming from, I don't agree. If he doesn't show up till week 10 they pay out the *** for a possible 3rd round compensation pick. I believe I give him till 1 week before the Draft, then try to trade him to ANYONE for ANYTHING better than a late 3rd rounder. At that point I look at a RB in the Draft, as well as use the funds to make the best moves at the time. Of course I DO NOT tell Bell any of this, I continue to let him think he has all the power. At some point you have to accept that a player really doesn't want to be there and move on. Yes, it would suck to move on, but it is all about the business.

If he doesn't show up till week 10, he is only paid the prorated portion of the tag. He is losing money if he doesn't sign at Week 1.
You can't trade anyone who is not under contract. Until he signs the tag, the team has no options. But neither does Bell unless he signs the tag, which he has stated he won't until after the 4th preseason game. He is betting on himself to have another season like last year. If he does, he will get some team to give him whatever he wants in 2019. Pitt will receive the highest comp in return. The thing is, he KNOWS he won't have the same season unless he is playing in Pitt this year.

Letting the Steelers know what his intentions are was stupid on Bell’s part. He essentially let them know they have five months to figure out if they really want to spend all that money on one player or consider alternatives. I’m hoping they find alternatives.

You have it back asswards - Bell is doing the Steelers a big favor by saying he'll come back at all.

# 1 RBs in the league don't grow on trees

How are they trading an unsigned player?

when was the last time a #1 rb won the super bowl? its just not that important in todays nfl and a waste of money the difference in production from #1 to #20

It's NOT just the #1RB but the #1 RB wanting paid way more than value of a #1 RB

Salute the nation

He gets as long as it takes. Unlike WR where there is depth, there's Le'Veon and a bunch of role players at RB on this team. And before anyone says it because of their homer goggles, Conner can't hold his jock.

every dollar you pay the players goes towards the cap its just when

https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/2...rn-performance-based-bonuses-for-2017-season/

Thanks to a scheme established to compensate players receiving relatively low salaries who saw significant playing time last season, two players on the Pittsburgh Steelers are among the big winners this year. Both cornerback Mike Hilton and tight end Jesse James were awarded significant sums, with James receiving the 15th highest payout of anyone in the league.

James will pocket an extra $387,793.95, while Hilton will receive an additional $327,377.67. Fortunately for a team struggling to find salary cap space this offseason, these figures do not count against the ledger. The highest earner in the league under the scheme this year was Tennessee Titans guard Quinton Spain, a recipient of just under $500,000 in performance-based-pay.

No Connor can't, but neither can Clemens, Blount, Ajayi, white, or Lewis.

And its a very replaceable position. To add to the problem, our guy is high maintenance me first type of player who used social media to take shots and threaten the Steelers.

Dan Rooney would not stand for this. I wonder if Tomlin, who does not understand offensive football is the guy pounding the table to keep Bell at all costs.

did you used to be able to add incentives that didnt count against the cap if they were not "easily achievable"? i.e. "Lead the league in rushing" would not but "rushing for 10 yards" would.

Every position is replaceable. Even SB winning QBs.
Most high profile athletes are high maintenance, comes with the territory. Please provide the link where Bell has taken shots at the Steelers on social media. Before you salivate on your response, a player commenting about his worth via tweets or in his lyrics isn't bashing anyone, they are doing what you do...voicing an opinion. Although yours is in layman's terms. '

Dan Rooney hasn't been in control of day to day operations since the mid 2000s. Art 2 has, and Dan Rooney was well enough satisfied with Bell and Blount's end result, as well as the Bryant episode.

Your opinion, again, is noted as well as your agenda. The fact that you instigate that Tomlin doesn't understand offensive football is a testament to your ignorance on the matter. Forget about playing the game in college (as a WR) he has coached from the college ranks through the NFL as an assistant to coordinator to HC. Its amazing what you muster behind the keyboard but I would doubt seriously you would bark at a professional coach in person.

More agenda driven BS. KC and Art 2 is calling Bell's bluff......they know there is no one on par AT THIS TIME in THIS OFFENSE available to replace Bell, so either he signs the long term deal, or bet against himself. If he produces great for him I hope he does, that means we had a prolific offense and a better shot than most for a championship. You love bets and changing the parameters...why not go talk to Bell and see if he changes his?

I'd say Fourtnette was the leading reason for the Jags turn around. We likely beat them twice in 2017 if they did not have him.
Elliott seemed to do the same for dallas two years ago. A good back gets you in position for short yardage passing downs.
