The Pittsburgh Steelers........its still early in the season but with scoring up overall throughout the league the Steelers are ranked 6th in pts allowed at 17.3....The overall league avg is 23.4. They allowed just 87 yds rushing per game, ranking them 10th overall in the league. Again, its early but I think the defense is starting to come together. Passing defense is a problem but we are just beyond middle of the pack in that category.

Now, I already know this thread will have its detractors and they'll say "well, we haven't really played any tough offenses outside of NE....". True, but with as bad as things looked pre-season and the first game with the communication issues with the secondary, I do think we are seeing a substantial improvement over what we anticipated we would see. Butler is no LeBeau..I get that, but I think as the season goes along we will only get better and keep scoring below last years 25.4 avg we seen under Dick. I still think we are a couple seasons away from being a dominating unit provided we get better play from our secondary. With Tuitt coming along nicely and youngins in Durpee and Shazier (staying healthy) to mix in with veterans like Hayward, Timmons and Moats filling in nicely with spot play, im expecting a promising future and another SB run. Im optimistic, but im not gonna apologize for it either.

I was surprised to see that as well, we're Also tied for 4th in sacks. You'd think our defense was pretty dominate just looking at those numbers.

the cheats are scoring like crazy against their other opponents. The Steelers D actually held on compared to the carnage in the other cheats game

Yup. The Steelers defense is the only one that has kept the pats under 40...

Agree that two of the three teams we've played have bad offenses, but color me shocked. I was hoping that Butler's simpler schemes would work. Even the sports guys on the radio yesterday were saying that new approach of "See the guy with the ball? Go kill him." is working better than DLB's schemes that had everyone mostly thinking about where they had to be.

Shouldn't this be in the pom pom thread? What's with all the positivity on the board? Makes me sick, I tell ya.

GREAT post to OP. I agree in a lot of ways. I think this "D"efence can rank near 15 by the end of the year. Maybe even better.

Salute the nation

Yep. This isn't your....... one or two years younger version of yourself's.... Pittsburgh Steelers defense. These kids are young, fast, and hungry

I thought from the beginning that if the D could be in the top 50% that would be good enough to get to the SB with this offense. Of course with Ben out I'm not so sure.

First game was an anomaly playing against Brady and not being prepared. This defense has lots of room to grow. They've got to stay healthy and minimize penalties but I like where they are going. Gotta see more out of Jarvis. Also would like to see more turnovers.

Aside from JJ the front 7 have looked pretty good. If the secondary could just work their way up to somewhat respectable, they may have something. Let's hope the wheels don't fall off the offense during Ben's absence..

JJ has looked good vs. the run. He has a real strength in chasing down RBs in the backfield. He's still a piss poor pass rusher though

Even with Ben, I don't know if a middle of the pack defense would be enough to win a championship. As good as the offense looks, they still aren't that great in the red zone. Watching Rodgers last night was like watching someone take candy from a baby. His red zone efficiency is off the chain. Our offense isn't there yet. Unstoppable between the 20's, not so much inside them. If we could score like that, I'd say a 15th or so ranked defense would be enough. But as it stands, I don't think it is.

Yeah, but. Tom's best TD day so far is still against the Steelers with 4. His average yards per pass attempt was best against the Steelers at 9 yards. His best overall passer rating so far was against the Steelers at 143.7, tops is 158. They were a dropped pass and an overthrow away from giving up 42.

If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. Every team has dropped passes and overthrows. It's part of the game. What a ridiculous ******* argument.

Who gives a **** if marshas highest td count was against the steelers? The great Rex Ryan didn't give gronk 3 tds or Marsha 4 tds. Too bad he could keep other people from scoring, eh?

dare I say Mike Mitchell is not playing all that bad??

So he looks good when not blocked and gets help making the tackle?

and after he is thru he will show you and almost get to the QB

I don't think his lack of speed hurts him at all

:disgust:

and the first game with the communication issues with the secondary,

uh huh.. is THAT what you call it?

Shut up... you will jinx it ;)

I was thinking the same thing.

I especially liked the show he displayed after they give up a 12 yard first down. He pops the guy after he vest the first down and stands and poses for the sideline. Wow I was like " you do realize they just completed a twelve yard pass and got a first down "

Rush defense looks pretty good...pass defense is still suspect. I thought the Rams were way too conservative with their play-calling; they could've had a much better day throwing the ball Good quarterbacks are still going to destroy this secondary.
