GDT- HOFgame - August 9 2015 Vikings-Steelers

I don't think Archer was being targeted was being dictated from the sidelines.

I think some of it was, but others it looked like he was the only one Jones was comfortable throwing to.

I just don't understand Jones. You are a 3rd string guy, and may get cut even from that. Come out and wing the ball around a little. Just throw the damn thing. He was throwing too cute at times.

Yes some the screens, the ones he lined up at or motioned out to WR. The others he was just the safety valve. Had his moment's. Like to see him keep his balance

I have to keep telling myself that it's only preseason...that it doesn't matter..but that game was UG-LEE.

archer was targeted so much because Landry goes to his checkdown too quickly. That was his college offense. Look for the first option, then check down to DeMarco Murray and he runs for 10 yards.

There had to be 5 or 6 drops that didn't help, but even accounting for that, Landry still blew a bunch of chances. Before the Jesse James TD drop, Landry missed 2 throws for the TD. The long one to Phillips should have been an easy TD. Phillips had to lay out just to make the catch. He then air-mailed one to Coates when he got the CB to bite and he was wide open.

NBC coverage sucks, those **** heads could not cover a kitchen chair with a blanket.

Clearly a game plan should be tried for these games the coaching staff needs to get ready as well. Archer looks much better than last year, not great but likely worth a spot on the team. Laundry looks better, he has gone from God Awful to poor. He did throw some passes that need to be caught, some of these guys look like they need to not stop on the routes the pass to James at the 2 that he dropped if the other receiver was not in line with him might have had the ball thrown his way.

Jesse James is looking like practice squad material so far tonight. If Alejandro is not ready as a tackle he could likely be a tight end as he did that in college. I suspect he will be a much better blocker and in a pinch could be our back up tight end and tackle.

Lots of guys look totally unprepared out there for what they should be doing. Saw one good play from Chicillio and some good hustle from Dupree. Lots of theses guys do not look like they have a clue yet and they are messing up the whole concept of team play.

As a big basher on Archer he had a decent run out of the end zone to the 25 caught some passes, made some runs that gained yardage. The offensive line looked like they could not block the fast lane at walmart with a full shopping cart for much of the game.

Why in the hell do we have so damn many delay of game penalties?

Defense was a sieve not much pressure poor tackling. Lots of things to go back to the lab on, obviously. There were occasional good plays evident so not a total loss.

Did I mention the coverage by NBC sucked, now with the lineup of shows they advertised I am sure I will not watch them again until they have a steeler game on. That was like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer it feels good when you stop.

Did Doran Grant get into the game? I don't recall seeing him

I will give it a pass tonight. My problem is that they have come out unprepared the last several seasons in preseason and everyone says it is just preseason. Then they lose badly to the Titans at home and DAMN near blow a 24 point lead to the ****** Browns. And they were soft last year out of the gate going2-2 and losing to Tampa.

Dri Archer has to win the return jobs or else he will contribute little. He just goes down way too easily to be a RB. I've never seen a guy get so little out of breakaway speed.

He has no vision as an open field runner. When he gets the ball, he sees the closest tackler and then simply tries to outrun him to the edge and this either traps him to the boundary or runs him into another tackler.

I think they need to start trying him at WR. Or just make him concentrate on returns. Put him off to the side catching punts off the jugs machine.

That is what I see. He finds contact. There was no excuse tonight to not rip off some type of big play. He is a bust. The Steelers attempts at super shifty little guys haven't worked when Antwan Randle El is the best of the bunch. Amos Zeroue and Rainey were worse.

Landry throws pretty spirals but he can't hit the broad side of a barn. Jessie Clank James didn't help him

Sammie Coates showed some speed and moves but his was a wasted effort. He coulda had a couple TD's with Ben out there

The team looked like **** obviously, I'm sure it was Colberts fault couldn't have anything to do with shades. This is a trend that seems to go from preseason into the season. I wish they would do a bit of game planning just to get that aspect down as well then by the time the first game rolls around they will be ready to play. They sure did not look ready last night.

From here on out he will be Laundry Jones to me.....because all he was good for was dirtying his uniform....

Didn't Zeroue produce a 600-700 yard season before? I am in no way, shape or form defending the infatuation the Steelers have with these gimmick players but, I think Zeroue did have one somewhat decent season with us. I know he had a nice game against the rats in the 2001 playoffs and I believe ran over Ray Ray for a td. That alone makes him better than both Rainey and archer.

Overall, the rookies looked good (no DB's). Encouraged by my pre-camp favorites: Dupree, Coates, James. James looked nervous and the drops contributed to that, but he was getting open and understood the playbook very well. Good athleticism and movement skills. He's going to be a keeper, just let him make a few catches.

Boykin is good. Might be our best CB right now. That's not saying much.

Still don't like the Archer experiment but for those that liked him going in, he flashed that speed enough to keep them happy. For those that don't like him, he did enough to look soft and small and lacked toughness to make them happy too. Archer's going to get a LOT of reps this August to sink or swim.

This whole pre-season is going to be the Landry Jones show and I'm fine with that. The more reps the better. This is the end of the road for him and we have no one else. Every pre-season game, they should go through an actual game planning week with Jones and see what happens. I don't think any of us are shocked by the fact that if Roethlisberger goes down with an injury our season is over. That's not going to change if Gradkowski gets reps if Jones gets reps or if someone else gets reps.

Don't like Stingily much. Too slow. Don't understand the attraction from the coaches.

Offensive line looks okay. Encouraged by the depth. Villanueva might work and make the roster. He's going to get lots of work this summer too.

I see a nice bump in the 2nd year players (except Archer): Shazier and Tuitt are going to start and gets TONS of snaps this season. We shouldn't over work them too much in pre-season. They are too important to the regular season.

Overall, I'm not very impressed with the depth on the team. Roster spots #45-53 aren't that good. We're hanging on to some very questionable talents and trying to force the issue. From Cam Thomas to Dri Archer to Cameron Stingily to some of the O-line depth it's not quite as talented as you'd like. I'd like to see a few more talented guys on the 2nd and 3rd stringers that I consider would have a change to be players in the NFL. Not sure I see much of that.

Dri Archer is who he is. A small guy who played in a small D1 conference and ran a 4.2 in a straight line in tights. He doesn't have elite vision and talent as a returner like a Devin Hester, Dontae Hall, or Randle El. If you recall his two splash plays from last year preseason and watching him last night, he simply relies on having the angle on the defenders and takes advantage with the offensive line blocking and WR blocking down field.

For those who watched the HOF game last night during the Steelers first series on defense, remember Arthur Moats was one on one against the ball carrier along the sideline. The runner was able to juke Moats and get by him and earned the first down. I don't think Archer gets by the defender in that scenario. Like his failed attempt to outrun Suggs on a carry in the playoff game. His style has been to try and out run the defender with pure speed instead of mixing in change of pace, agility, and acceleration a la Antonio Brown.

Can Dri be a weapon, sure he can. I wish Ben would have given him a chance on the wheel route against the Titans last year. Those are the mismatches you are looking for when you insert him into the game. We don't need him to be a third down pass blocking back! Bye-bye Mewelde Moore.

Last night was a step in the right direction aside from the muffed punt, which he still recovered.

I hate preseason football! I think we lost our kicker last night on him trying to make a tackle...blah. The starting offense didn't play a lick either. well not the big guns anyway. I figure to attend this fridays game vs the jagoffs. I'm sure by halftime ill be zz zzz zzz.
