Fitzpatrick has made Steelers D Great Again

Dupree will get franchise tagged if they can't get an extension signed. Actually let me reword that. He will get franchise tagged and THEN they will try to work a full contract extension out with him during camp.

Can't afford to open a hole at OLB without a first round pick this year. We need to retain guys who are performing so we have free money to fill holes in UFA

I sure hope they don't. That's way too much money to tie up in a rental player. Groom the young guys. Watt, JuJu and Minkah all deserve contracts before Dupree but Dupree is next up. Conner, unfortunately, will probably be another odd man out since his rookie deal is up when JuJu and Watt come due.

Can't afford to have him counting as 16 million against the cap, especially after 4 blah seasons for a first round pick, need a TE, another WR, will need to resign guys. Watt is getting the double teams.

How do you know he will end up being a rental player? The tag would be used to lock him down so they could negotiate a long term deal at a later date. Only if they fail to negotiate a long term deal would he become a rental player.

The week we got him, I posted that I haven’t been this excited about a player acquisition since the day Big Ben was drafted. While some may argue about whether this Defense is great, there’s no denying that Minkah is.

6 games
4 int’s
2 forced fumbles
1 fumble recovery
1 TD in a huge turning point of a game that could’ve gotten out of hand.
= GREAT!!!

Ditto...

Anyone that can't see the impact he brings on the field (already) is blind. Again, Minkah was 'thrown into the fire' and he still learning on the job...

His football intelligence and presence on the field reminds me of Ryan Clark.

This is how I feel about the Minkah trade. I feel he was worth the trade even if it ended up costing a top 5 pick and here is why.

1. He is a up and coming star that is showing what he can do RIGHT NOW.
2. Even if the player they took in the top 5 position turns out to be a stud, he would most likely only be contributing at 40% NEXT year, and hopefully breaks out in his second year.
3. Minkah will be in his 3rd year with the Steelers at that point, and I do not envision any way that the next years rookie will have the same impact at that time.
4. The Steelers also DID NOT have to pay the signing bonus of a top 5 player, because Miami was forced to do it for them.

If it turns out to cost a 10-20 pick, it will be a deal. If somehow it turns out to be a 21-32 pick, it is a STEAL of epic proportions.

Minkah has "it" . Bud is having 1/2 good season out of 5. I'm sure someone will overpay for him, I hope it's not the Steelers.

I realize this is hypothetical on being a top 5 draft pick given up for him. The pick will end up in the 11-16 or lower range.

Salute the nation

More than one moronic Pittsburgh sport talk show host is still arguing that you have to wait to see where the Steelers would end up picking in the first round to determine if it was a good trade or not. Like that draft pick, if it’s higher than 11 or wherever Fitzpatrick was selected, will come with a guarantee to produce a better player than him. That’s just idiotic.

I wouldn’t even come close to calling this D great... it’s definitely good, and it has more upside than we have had since dlb was here, but performance wise its been middle of the road with more big plays....

I think we were just so use to bad defense the past few years that good defense seems great now....

Having said that Fittz was a great add and totally worth it

Hold on here though, Trog. I have it on very good authority that picks in the top-12 NEVER bust. Indeed, they inevitably wind up having extremely good/multiple Pro-Bowl careers. Just ask Solomon Thomas, John Ross, Mike Williams, Leonard Floyd, Eli Apple, Vernon Heargraves, Donta Fowler, Kevin White, Trae Waynes, Danny Shelton, Blake Bortles, Sammy Watkins, Justin Gilbert, Dion Jordan, Barkevious Mingo, Jonathan Cooper, Tavon Austin, Dee Milliner, Chance Warmack, D.J. Hayden, Trent Richardson, Justin Blackmon, Morris Claiborne, Ryan Tannehill, or ... Mark Barron.

God, I cringe at the thought of the Steelers getting a superior safety, an awesome football player, a guy who reads and intercepts like nobody since Polomalu, but in the process losing the next Justin Gilbert or Barkevious Mingo.

The Steelers love Bud and may make him an offer. Here are his pros and cons:

1. Great at setting the edge
2. Can defend the short area zone well
3. Is adequate if asked to man cover a TE
4. is good at getting QB pressure
5. Bonus - He's starting to show his growth and elite level play this year

Cons:
1. Has trouble staying healthy for a whole year
2. in previous years, had the propensity to do the same pass rush move expecting different results (which never came).
3. Work ethic? I'm not sure what it is, I'm speculating here, but before this season how hard did he work to try and be the best?
4. Is he benefitting off of playing opposite of an all pro player?

Personally I don't keep him, because I'm not sure I can commit that much money to a player who has trouble staying healthy. Though the Steelers do love to keep their own, and it wouldn't surprise me if they made an offer.

Dupree worked out with Chuck Smith prior to the start of the 2017 season. I give him credit for slowly getting better. Two years ago he was invisible in games. Last year he flashed plays here and there and this year he's consistently been one of the best defenders on the field. It also seems like the team is giving him more opportunities to rush the quarterback.

Btw Sean Davis is two weeks from being eligible to return off IR. If he's good to go, he'll be an improvement over Kam Kelly in dime. He's better in coverage than Edmunds/Hilton, so maybe they'll move Edmunds inside to dime backer and pair Davis & Fitz in deep zones. I know Butler likes that three safety alignment.

Was the injury season ending? That would definitely be a help.

Are you saying he was solely responsible for those TDs given up? I am just clarifying I haven't zoomed in on game tape yet...

I'm saying he was the single high safety in cover one on both plays. Every other player is in man. I believe on the first it was Hilton badly outsized by the TE Doyle. Fitz read the inside slots moved and was late to the TE. It was essentially the same defense as the pick six. He just misread it. Then they highlighted him on the second one which I believe was a Pascal the wr. TD.

I am sure he will film room give it a look.

Too bad about Gilbert, was looking forward to seeing him, on ST's at the least.

The injury to Davis is likely season ending according to Jim Wexell. A shame.
