Everyone knows the team needed DEFENSE, yet 3 of our first 4 picks went to the offens

Rule #1 - win the division first

Day 3 and the Ravens haven't taken a WR yet?

LOLOLOLOL

Ravens boards are a hoot

Mark it down folks, this team will be drafting in the top 10 and maybe even the top 5 within 2 years.

I think the great and powerful Oz is and HAS been showing signs of dementia in his draft choices. This regime has done nothing but out-smart itself for the past 10 years. They refuse to take QB accuracy seriously. They won't draft wideouts. They actually think Marty Mornhinweg is a legitimate offensive coordinator. This is the beginning of the end of this regime and there will be a house cleaning at the purple palace in about 4 years. Why Bisciotti is allowing such a long painful downward spiral of the present brain trust is beyond me.

I am not sold on the Lamar Jackson pick. I have my feelings on it and they will not change until he proves me wrong about his ability to play at this level. I would have much rather taken a shot on Rudolph in round 2.

So far the Browns and Steelers have made some really good selections. Steelers just continue to get stacked at the WR position

yep

now and the future addressed. I am happy...

Yeah, I don't think this is such an awful draft. I would have liked to have seen the Steelers pick up a LB'er, but as stated above, if Edmunds was drafted to play in the sub packages in place of Shazier, then that need was addressed. Our QB ain't no spring chicken, and having Jones come off the bench makes me cringe. Not to mention, he could be the QB after Ben retires. And, to get him in round 3? That was excellent value IMHO. Also needed a WR. After AB and Ju-Ju, you have Eli Rodgers, Justin Hunter and Heyward-Bey. And you get a guy like James Washington. Another Excellent pick. Picking a tackle doesn't bother me as much as the tackle they picked. There were better players available. Not a horrible pick, but.........

Eli is a free agent, so they didn't even have him.

On a team that uses three/four WRs a lot, you had two.capable consistent.

Still might see another before it is said and done.

Hawkins can’t be the swing tackle? He played one season and looked decent enough to develop into that this season. I just don’t see a need for a tackle that early, find your developments guy in the 5th if that’s the route you want to go.

So Rudolph is going to be sitting 3 seasons til he gets a shot to start, I wonder if he’s going to be alright with this once he sees all the other QBs from this class getting their chance immediately or after a season. Sure, it’s easy for him to say now but won’t be easy in year 2 of sitting. I look for Ben to be pushed out after a year or two even if he wants to play still.

I’m fine with the Washington pick, he’s solid and fills a need.

Hawkins has not looked good in preseason and how many game day hats have he had? I think this pick says what the coaching staff feels about Hawkins taking over for Hubbard.

Roethlisberger is 36 with two years left on his contract. He might want to play 3 more years but he’s only under contract for 2.

If they were even interested in Van. There was ONLY a report they wanted to move up for Evans. Far as we know they didn't see Van as a 1st rounder.

Unknown what their board looks like..................
We went back and forth about LVE for weeks. The Steelers interviewed him. Took him out and brought him in. If he was available he would have been in play. He went top 20. Which says something about him. He is a Cowboy and I hope you are right about him.
When ypu have lots of options you generally get a good player.

It seems the Steelers went about the first three rounds in a very calm and methodical manner. No panic, no frantic moves to plug perceived holes. This is how a great team like the Steelers operates, with steady coaching, management and ownership. And a pretty damn good roster to work with. Even with Okorafor, they saw a guy Munchak got excited about and decided to add talent to the room. Let Pouncey, DeCastro and others groom the young pup. Same with Mason Rudolph. To get a first round talent in the 3rd to learn from Ben for a couple of years is the perfect way to provide a seamless transition of franchise QB's. I love it.

Brilliant! **** the defense - go all out for Ben to get us another ring!

They finally ******* listened to me! Defense DOES NOT win championships anymore!

All offense! Woo-hoo!

The End of the Landry ******* Jones era too!

Oh what a happy day!

Sorry Spike, but the playoff game against Jacksonville shows that no matter how good your offense is you have to have a competent defense. We definitely needed to replace Bryant, but they missed the boat by not finding a solid ILB

Not ruffled just tired of your bitching and whining about every pick.

I bet off the board you are a real ******* joy to be around.

Step back and try not to be such a miserable fucktwatwaffle.

I just think he is an attention ***** who cant live if his lil name isn't somewhere at the top leading the charge as to why he is smarter than the steelers and his thoughts are best.

coaches posts probably drive more people away from the site than draw anyone here.

"sub package" football is CRAZY. Using it, our D has gotten worse for three years in a row now. Not using a true NT to occupy double teams, stuff the run and allow the OLB's to get to the QB has NOT worked. Using 2 DL DOES NOT WORK! Rushing 3 DOES NOT WORK. Look at what the Eagles did to NE. They rushed 4 big dudes and harassed the hell out of Marsha. I absolutely HATE "sub package" football and will until someone can prove that it works. Our glaring weakness was on D. Sure we got one slightly above average S in FA to replace our average S. We grabbed a part time starter at ILB to add some depth there. But, we didn't really improve the D. We are 90% relying on our guys from last year to play better. Boy I hope they do or we are getting to get lit up this year playing the teams we play. 30+ by Ben and crew every game will be mandatory.

I think what it showed is the defense isn't getting better with the addition of one ILB. The whole secondary and DL needs replaced, really - you can't do that in one draft, a decade maybe.

With Harrison gone we have no legitimate feared edge rushers so we'll be going full dime packages 90% of the time. Our Soft Weak DL will still give up gashes up the gut and no pressure up the middle so once again it will be ALL on Ben to get us those 30+ points to give us wins.

Didn't Rooney pretty much demand the D get better? Guess they blew him off this time.

You can just sense he wants to start badly...now.

Bostic, Burnett, Edmunds ... that's three investments on the defense.
And, I'd imagine Rooney was in the War Room when picks were made. If the owner insisted on a defense heavy draft or even a specific player, that's what he's going to get. I think Rooney just let them do their jobs.

Someone, please explain to me why the Steelers think WR and OT, positions where we have pro bowl starters and very good players is a more significant need than ILB, NT/DT, and TE, where the starters are replaceable?

Simple, the Oline is aging and needs depth, the WR we drafted is a substantial upgrade over the guys we have behind Brown and JuJu, and none of the defensive players available were upgrades over the players we already have. TE? Which one was an upgrade over MacDonald or James when we drafted?

I would have been happier with Baker in round two. A speedy linebacker. You can pick up a 3rd or 4th WR easily in free agency. Was Eli that bad?

Bostic has been cut a few times. He’s not much help at ILB. Or he’s better than Dirty Red but not by much.

I agree though. Rooney is letting them do their jobs.

Cleveland has needed a QB for years and address that deficiency every year.
Should we be more like Cleveland and draft for need instead of BAA?

Well, Supe, when you look at the results, teams have to be interested in the Browns' methods. Perfect this past season, damn near perfect the season before.

The defense was good enough until Shazier got hurt. Im pretty sure that if they could have gotten a player like that they would have taken him. The two guys that they were interested in were gone. Both of them had issues by the way. So now they will split the void of Shazier between two. Bostic will play the run/pass downs. Edmunds will play the pass downs. Id like to see someone else's better plan. I really would.

Watch the 1st TD in the Jax playoff game, I think it was the first.. 4th and goal. RB goes over the top. Spence is there(ish) but cant hold him back. With shaz, that play has better chance of being stopped. With someone better than spence, that play has better chance of being stopped. Stopping that play makes it a different game.

But it signals a change in defensive philosophy. With Ryan Shazier now out of the lineup for the foreseeable future — if he ever plays again — the Steelers faced the task this offseason of replacing their most dynamic defensive playmaker. Shazier was capable of making plays at all three levels of the defense, much the same way Troy Polamalu used to be able to affect a game.

They were not, however, going to get a player like Shazier picking 28th in the first round of the draft or in free agency. And given that the only inside linebacker with Shazier-like skills — Smith — was selected with the eighth-overall pick by the Chicago Bears, the Steelers had no chance of going up to get him.

Evans or Vander Esch would have been Plan A. Now, they’ll go with Plan B.

Plan B is one they have already begun formulating when they acquired Jon Bostic and Morgan Burnett in free agency. And Edmunds, a big, speedy safety, also figures into the equation.

Bostic replaces Shazier in the 3-4 defense, which the Steelers play 25-30 percent of the time. And Burnett or Edmunds slide up to inside linebacker in the nickel and dime defenses, which the team plays 70-75 percent of the time.

Which one is really the base defense?

The base defense is the one you play the most, which would mean the sub-package is, in reality, the team’s base defense.

Mason gave an awesome interview, hungry and humble, said its not Bens job to help him, its on him to learn everything he needs to know and be ready if his name is called. Perfect.

He's been on NFLN almost non-stop for a month now. Love the kid. I think hes a legit starter in a couple years.
