Enjoy these last 7-10 games with Ben...

because he's going to retire after this year. You can just see it on the field and in his play. He's not enjoying himself, he seems to lack confidence in his throws, and he wants no part of contact, almost scared in the pocket. He made a helluva play to AB on that game winning drive but this isn't the Ben I have loved to watch since 2004. He just appears off....I don't know what it is. I really think his heart just isn't in it anymore. I hope he goes out a champion, best quarterback we have ever had. He single handedly turn this franchise around when he was drafted. And there is no doubt he is a hall of famer. I just hope we don't go another 20-25 years to find that franchise guy again.
I thing your imaginary summation belongs in a fictional novel.
Of course BR doesn't want to get hit, he wants to win championships like everyone else, if he is injured the offensive team will be put in the hands of ??
I noticed an irate Ben during the 2 point attempt and subsequent delay penalty. I'm not a professional lip reader but Haley sure looked like he yelled "shut the FAK up" to someone. Considering the confusion was obviously about the play and the personnel in the play package, who would Haley be talking to?
If this is the relationship these two have, that might be a bad sign. Or maybe a relationship intervention by a professional?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if Ben really wants to play another year or two, he needs to lose a few pounds. I'm not talking 50 lbs here.. I'm talking about 15 or 20. If he were 15 or 20 lbs. lighter, he'd be more mobile and be able to use his legs more to throw the ball. The older these guys get, the better shape they need to be in to make it through a season and play at this level. Ben has never been a fitness specimen but if he is serious about playing past this year, he better start thinking more along those lines.

He did well in his contract year, had the personal trainer.

Not so sure he has had that since then.

I was understanding that if he quit then he would have to give money back due to his signing bonus pro-rate. I could be wrong but I thought it was a decent chunk of change................ ANYBODY know or can expand on this????

He ain't quitin, until after this SB win.

For Ben, it all comes down to signing bonus proration. If he's cut, he loses his salary and roster bonuses (for any season he is not on the roster or IRed).

His signing bonus is spread out over 5 years. For this year and the next 2 years it is $6.2M/ year. So if he was cut this season, the Steelers would have had $18.6M in dead money to account for. In certain instances, a team can go after that prorated signing bonus from the player. Usually if a player retires with multiple years left on a contract. It doesn't happen often, but it can happen. So for example if Ben retires next year, the Steelers have $12.4M in dead money. If Ben was willing to give back that amount or any part of it, the money he gave back would be removed from the dead money for that player counted toward the Steelers cap space.

I think Barry Sanders did it to leave the Lions. Rickey Williams had to come back to the league, because the league was going to force him to give his signing bonus back.

Here's an example of what happened with Calvin Johnson, showing you can work with the team to pay back part of the prorated bonus. They touch on Barry Sanders as well:

He's definitely got one foot out the door. You can see he is not the Big Ben of old, but now the Old Big Ben. Does he still have some game left in him? I think so but he's not the same as he once was. We will ride him until he's done. I hope we can get one more season out of him. This is why I said last week we must draft a R1 QB next draft. The time to groom his replacement will be next year.

Did they go after Troy for money when they forced him to "retire"?

I think Ben really wants to win, and really wants his guys to be a big part. He knows, like on the play to AB, that he still can do it, but he also knows that there are only a limited number of those plays left for him.
I hate seeing him play at 90%, because that last 10% makes all the difference. I think he wants/needs other guys on O to step up and make that winning effort. This has been missing all year, on a consistent basis. It was evident early in KC, late yesterday, etc.
This team will live or die by its players mskjng those great plays in Dec/Jan (because Haley is an idiot)

The difference between old Ben and now is he needs guys to make plays, he can't keep plays alive for 8 seconds anymore, so when the OLine is playing like ***, like the first half yesterday, don't expect 2008 Ben, remember 3 of those 9 passes in the first half were throw away, and per Trent Green smart decisions by Ben because of pressure and no one open.

Post of the day.

I think the Steelers have the pieces in place. I also feel BIg Ben can have the same type of success Manning had toward the end. But he needs this team to focus and play as a team.

Haley becomes the wildcard in all of this. Can he mix things up and make calls that make sense. Get the right players on the field in the right situations?

I would play

McDonald Brown Juju Bryant in the red zone more often than not........

One area you can see a change and I've almost never seen him do it until this year... Ben throwing the ball away (typically into the ground) when a play breaks down.

In the past, scramble, scramble, scramble, and throw a bomb and stick the dagger in the defense's heart.
NOW, half-*** scramble, throw it away.
Reason --- his wife is in his head about injuries.

I've said it in another thread, when he was out getting his pinky stinky, he played lights out. Since he go married, not so much.

It's called age and years of taking hits. It's funny people bitched for years on here because he wouldn't throw the ball away, now he does (and the ex QB calling the game says it was smart) and now people ***** he's throwing it away, hilarious.

sort of

I could see next year. If the ring doesn't come this year.

But beyond that not so sure.........

Ben will not be with us much longer regardless. He has 14 seasons in the league. It's inevitable he will retire shortly and we need to address it one way or the other.

Said this in another thread. I really think he is just fed up with Haley and the drama bs as he has gotten older

I can’t put my finger on it with Ben this year. I don’t think he “check out”. No way. You hear the old school talking heads talk about if I didn’t have to do OTAs, training camp, and just get my body ready I’d be out there. There is no way he did all that not to be 100% for himself, his team and fans. But. There is no fire no emotion, sometimes it seems like he’s not even there. I have a feeling he is so done with Haley and the drama queens on the O. You see it every week. He tries to force **** to whom ever was pissed the week before (AB and MB) to **** them the **** up.

Still happy he is our qb and will be so sad when he is gone but I want the fire back Ben.

This is the point I've been making all year. People want to criticize Ben for his production, but half of the time he's just forcing the ball to AB to keep him from crying. Yesterday it was Bryant. He's had some off throws this year, I won't deny it, but Ben has never given a **** about his stats. He's a gunslinger that wants to win and will go out bombing it deep when he's down, which inflates his INT numbers and changes the narrative about him. Bring up the Packers SB and people only want to point to the INTs: one of which he was blasted as he threw because Kemoeatu was worthless, one of which came after Mendenhall's fumble and we were down to a prayer on the final drive. Despite all that he's one of the greatest ever statistically and we'll be ****** without him. Can't wait until he's been retired a few seasons and the media and average fan changes their tune.

I just do not think Ben is having fun anymore - he just does not seem to be enjoying himself like in his firs few years. I hate that but when I see him in the shotgun anymore I see fear not the FIRE that we are used to! I would love to see him just take a hit after throwing a great throw and pop back up with a grin on his face!

Like I've said before. Ben will be done after this year. Regardless of a SB or not. My Opinion.

I can only imagine what Bens stats would look like if he had a Larry Fitzgerald to throw the ball to. A guy that is all business and not a damn diva like Brown or Bryant.

I think we all need to see it coming. Every week seems to be a controversy with this team. End of last year all the tweets and face book and selfi crap and we got it handed to us by NE. This year Bryant, Bell staying home and showing himself with to many extra tweets, yelling on sidelines, talk of Haley to go . to many selfish players that want stats and not wins. A head coach that has a hard time getting a team ready especially when playing an inferior team. A team more concerned of crap in end zone than playing. A rookie offering a veteran QB payment to do the jig in the end zone. Would anyone be surprised really.

What's amazing is while we see Ben, Eli and Rivers all looking their age, Smith and Rodgers seem like they're 2-3 years younger despite being drafted in 2005.
