Dri 2.0

Ha ha, Dri Archer is going to make it, he's gonna be fine. The haters will continue to hate, regardless.

well, he's behind Sammie Coates now.

Dri's success won't come from being x or y on the depth chart at any one position. It will come from Haley working him in at multiple spots in the offense and of course his work on special teams. That in my book is his one shot, to be a multi-faceted, multi-purpose player that can pressure defenses from multiple positions on the field. Either it's gonna work, or it won't. If they can't find a role from him, he'll be free to get on with his life's work. The big question is does he show up a stronger, smarter, braver player than he was as a rookie. He's got to be fearless and go balls to the wall. Needless to say this off-season will be critical for him.

Agreed. I think what he did or didn't do this offseason is going to show if he can take that next step or not. If he sat around and did nothing he could be a 53 man roster cut. If he worked hard, lifted weights, ran routes, caught punts, studied the playbook, etc we will see and I think he will have a nice niche in the offense. If not he could be cut.

Honestly, I hope the entire team goes into the mindset of best man wins and every position is up for grabs. If Jarvis Jones isn't beating out Howard Jones then cut him and I don't care where he was drafted. If Sammie Coates beats out Wheaton and Bryant put him opposite of AB. Best player at every position.

I think this is accurate. It matters ****-all if he is 100th on the depth chart at any particular position. Can they put him on the field to make a play himself or affect the defense such that someone else can make the play.

On his TD that was called back, I think we saw what he can do. On, at least, one play during the season, I saw two defenders move over to cover him on a short route. Shows what he can do indirectly. Being able to do something, directly or indirectly, consistently when he steps on the field is the key. I believe he has the talent and speed to do that.

If the coaches do not put him in a position to make plays (i.e. running up the ******* middle), it will be a problem. For last year, he played like, well, a rookie who was drafted very late in the third round.

Agreed Ark. Also the couple of plays he had in the pre-season also gave a glimpse of how they could use him. Again, not a lot to hang your hat on, and he no longer has the proverbial "he's just a rookie, give him time" card to play. He's got to man up and show he belongs. And he absolutely has to show he can be a factor in the return game. I highly doubt the Steelers will carry him on the roster if he doesn't make a firm case for himself in camp and pre-season. The clock is definitely ticking...

And just for ***** & giggles, since the Dri Archer thread has risen from the ashes, here's an overview of the young man's skills... He's got to rediscover his assertiveness returning kicks. Take a shot of vodka or something before heading out there...I dunno.

If he can do any of the things on his high light video in the nfl he will be at least a role player. Big difference is he will have to do it against much better competition. I still think he is too small to have much of a role in the nfl and unless he can do a lot the team might be better off with a mix of Bell, Wheaton, Coates, Brown, Bryant, Spaeth, Miller, at the offensive skill positions than Archer. If he does grab the return specialist position and can be used as an emergency or change of pace guy at another spot then he could be worth keeping if not keep a better football player.

Am I the only one on the Archer bandwagon?

Well, it is a little wagon......................

I hope the best for this kid, as usual, time will tell.

Salute the nation

Am I the only one on the Archer bandwagon?

I don't think so. I think the problem is that Dri is a little to small to pull the wagon and get it started moving.

Sorry, couldn't resist. But, like all Steelers picks, I hope the kid is able to show us something and make himself worth the pick.

Am I the only one on the Archer bandwagon?

Someone on here has said that Dri was their pick at that spot. I don't think that was you. That person, Tibs and you would make three on the bandwagon!

I'm wishy-washy. I'm believe he CAN make a good player, but not entirely convinced.

So 3 people on the wagon.

With the speed on the outside and when Bell comes back I think he is going to get his chances. Plus, I think our D is going to suck so we will have to score a lot.

Archer: 500yds. 4 total TDs. I already staked claim to those numbers a while ago.

If he can't even return kicks, about the only job someone of his size can do, then he isn't a fat lotta good.
I agree with Tibs, I seriously doubt he makes the final roster.

I'm still on the bandwagon. I think he needed time to adjust get stronger. Learn the offense. Hopefully this year we can see a more decisive player.

I'm not ready to cut Dri. Maybe he just doesn't have the talent to be an NFL player, but I'm not ready to say it's impossible that he'll ever be an Eric Metcalf-like player for us or that there's no role for a player of his size on offense. ****, just last November the Chiefs were doing some good things with De'Anthony Thomas. He caught 6 balls against us.

I tried to use profootballreference to get you a list of the players drafted between picks 92 and 102 that have had a season with over 500 yards (regardless of # of TD's). Dri doesn't show up on the list even though I chose to sort with Total Yards from Scrimmage >=0. I will keep working at it. One of my restrictions had to be wrong.

He's going to make the roster. Tombert isn't going to admit defeat on him just yet.

The real question is how long Tomlin forces the issue (puts him on the active roster and forces touches) and how long he stays on the active roster if those limited touches don't yield much. How many weeks of not being a returner and 4-5 touches a game does he put up with if the production isn't there and something pops up on special teams or an injury here or there demands adjustment to the active roster?

All of a sudden keeping Archer on the active roster doesn't make a lot of sense when the special team coach or secondary coach is bitching about not having enough capable bodies on game days.

Remember, he's SURE to get a hat on game days while Bell is on suspension. He'll be active just because he'll be the #2 or #3 RB on the depth chart on game days and we can't expect to hand off to Williams 25+ times a game weeks 1-3.

The first sign of doom is whether he KEEPS the hat once Bell returns week 4. Then we'll see if he keeps the hat as attrition/injuries start piling up mid-season or the special team group isn't playing up to the level we want.

I think he stops being active on game days on or about November 1st. That's my gut feeling as of now.

I see this statement a lot. Do people, really, think the Rooney's would allow a coach to keep a player on the field (keep in mind this is a coach that doesn't even get to select his own OC and DC...) and risk their billion dollar franchise just so the coach wouldn't be embarrassed? Doesn't make sense to me.

I'm firmly on the Archer bandwagon, small and rickety as it may be. And I'll remain here till he shows he doesn't belong and gets thrown wayside. Rooting for the Steelers for some 30+ years, I tend to be like that with our players, all of our players. I want the best for them and want to see them succeed. Especially true for a kid going on his second damn year. Everything I've seen from Archer shows he's a bright, hard working kid with a good attitude. Which makes it even stranger to see people (fans) turning on him so early on. I hope he finds a role this year, gets a hat on Sundays and adds a new dimension to our offense and special teams. I want to see the kid make it, and make it big. If he doesn't pan out, he'll join the hundreds of draft picks over the years that just didn't quite make it in the big league, for one reason or another. And life will go on...assuredly.

I'm lookin' forward to seeing if he can make a difference too but in the mean time it's amusing to read all the controversy that surrounds him. Hey..at least he hasn't been called gay yet, like Kordell ..LOL

The thing holding back Archer is not his potential or talent level, it's finding ways to utilize him. There was an article earlier this year about Haley utilizing him 5-7 times per game. It's creating plays to utilize his speed and explosiveness that will hopefully lead to points. A failure to utilize him at all would be the only coaching fail.

rumah has it Dri 2.0

is a reference to the yards he will average per carry this year
