Draft Game? Why not...

Your score is: 7436 (GRADE: A)

Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 25: Noah Spence, DE, Eastern Kentucky (A-)
Round 2 Pick 25: Hunter Henry, TE, Arkansas (A+)
Round 3 Pick 25: Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh (A+)
Round 4 Pick 25: Paul Perkins, RB, UCLA (A)
Round 7 Pick 8: D.J. Reader, DT, Clemson (A)

? OLB not a significant need. TE not a significant need. WR a non-existent need. RB a marginal need. DT and DE somewhat needs but in the 7th round you are probably getting practice squad players.

? OLB not a significant need. TE not a significant need. WR a non-existent need. RB a marginal need. DT and DE somewhat needs but in the 7th round you are probably getting practice squad players.

Outside linebacker is a need. Harrison may or not be back, Jones is a below average starter, Moats is backup caliber and Dupree is still a work in progress.

Tight end may not be an immediate need, but we may be looking at Miller's last season and I am not as high on James as some are. You are getting a future top option.

Boyd in the third round is a steal. Wheaton is in his final year, Bryant is a screw up away from being out and Coates has a ton of talent, but questionable hands.

Give me three prospects who I think can develop into very good players over average players at positions of need.

Round 1 Pick 25: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida (A)
Hargreaves is fast and has great hands. He might be a little undersized but he fits in with the cover 2 system we are predominantly running.

Round 2 Pick 25: Vernon Butler, DT, Louisiana Tech (A+)
Butler looked like a man amongst boys at the Senior Bowl. He could pass rush, play the run, and he just threw guys out of his way.

Round 4 Pick 16 (OAK): Joe Haeg, OT, North Dakota State (B+)
Haeg is a little developmental but he has great feet and size and to me looks to be a zone OL.

Round 4 Pick 25: Jatavis Brown, OLB/SS, Akron (B-)
Brown is one of the more intriguing prospects in the draft. He is 5-11 215lbs(ish) but plays LB. I just don't feel he stays at LB in the NFL but he has world class speed and am excited to see what he actually runs. My guess is he gets up to 220lbs+ but still runs in the 4.5 range. At 210lbs I feel he is a 4.4 guy. He will definitely need some work when it comes to coverage but he has the ability just needs technique. Sign Golden to start and see what Lake can do with this kid for a season.

Round 5 Pick 4 (OAK): Jihad Ward, DE, Illinois (A)
Ward is a perfect 34 DE and even though we are set at starter we don't have a true backup which Ward would provide. He'd be a depth guy but his athleticism could make it hard for him to stay off the field in a year or two.

Round 6 Pick 19 (OAK): Victor Ochi, OLB, Stony Brook (A-)
Ochi can straight up get the QB. He will need refinement on run stopping but you put him in on 3rd and long and pin his ears back and he will get the QB.

Round 7 Pick 8: Aaron Green, RB, TCU (A+)
I know Williams played great in Bells absent but Williams is 32 also and this kid Green is fast, has great moves, and can catch the ball. Great value pick this late and ads depth to the RB position.

Round 7 Pick 25: Caleb Benenoch, OT, UCLA (D)
Benenoch is a zone blocking OL guy to me. He is athletic as the come but might not be the strongest guy out there. Someone else for Munchak to mold.

I don't see the timing for taking a WR in the top 3 rounds. Too many more pressing needs. OLB, CB and S all trump a WR pick. And I could easily toss in NT as well.

I say we go with BAP...at OLB, CB, S for first 3 picks. NT in 4th. I'd also consider dropping out of the 1st round if no one is worthy of the pick there. Picking up and extra 3rd would be ideal.

Remember, to an extent successful drafting is like fishing and hitting on women: The more lines in the water the better your chances. Jimmy Johnson's brilliant Dallas drafts were successful through a high volume of picks.

It's not as if every pick he made was genius. It's just that he had so many picks, that odds are he was to land some good players and he did.

thing is you can't pigeon hole yourself into picking for need

drafting a average player over a star might be the difference between winning it all or just falling short....

the Steelers have had a solid history of productive 1's without trading down... Jarvis and Mendenhall were players they weren't targeting but fell in the draft.

OK, I know this is not going to happen but holy crap. Could you imagine trading down and getting this many picks? And, I could have gotten more but stopped. I guess, at some point, you have too many picks but maybe not. Throw them all in the pool and see who swims.

After watching PSU games for the past 2 years, i don't touch Hackenberg. The only thing he possesses is size for a QB. Above the neck, he's not a reliable QB.

I've also watched PSU and I'm not a Hackenberg fan but 4th round wouldn't be a bad place to pick him up if he's still available. I think some other team may draft him earlier - are you listening, Cleveland? - but I think late 4th would be a good place. He looked great until Bill O'Brien left and I'm wondering if he was ruined by bad coaching. Kid goes into pout mode when things aren't going his way but I hold out hope he can be coached out of that.

Your score is: 6056 (GRADE: B+) NO TRADES

Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 25: Andrew Billings, DT, Baylor (A+)

This is not only incredible value, but getting a talent like Billings at 25 is a steal. While some may say we don't need an immediate starter on the D-Line, while most likely true, there was no way I could pass on Billings. He has the combination of size, strength, and athleticism that makes him scary for opposing offenses. With the way we play our D in Nickel, we honestly would be able to shift Tuitt, Heyward, and Billings all over that D-Line, and use them in a variety of ways (especially since out D-Line pass rushes more now). This also would give McClendon the oppurtunity to shine as a swing guy once Billings is ready to start, and give our front the rotation is needs. Literally would make our front one of the youngest, most dangerous fronts in the league and help our LBs to make more plays.

Round 2 Pick 25: Vonn Bell, SS, Ohio State (A+)

While there was not a S worth taking in the first, the fact Vonn Bell makes it to our second pick is yet another value/steal/need pick. While Bell isn't flashy and doesn't wow anyone with athleticism, he is an all around good SS prospect. He understands the game and excels against the run and pass. Like I said now he won't make you WOW, but he will do his job and do it well.

Round 3 Pick 25: Kamalei Correa, OLB, Boise State (B)

I was very happy to see Correa here, and it wasn't hard to make this selection. He has the size and athleticism for the OLB spot in a 3-4, but he was also asked to cover in space at Boise St. giving him experience in coverage, increasing his value in our Nickel package. In regards to his pass rush, he shows excellent quickness of the edge, and at times vicious hands to prevent the OT from getting to his pads. He attempts to use inside counters but its obvious he needs to continue to develop there. There are times he sets the edge well against the run, and there are other times he can get stuck on the blocker and cannot shed the block giving up the hole for the RB. He needs to get stronger, and continue to improve on preventing blockers from getting to his pads. Probably could have went 2nd round and I' d be ecstatic to snag him in the third as a possible future replacement of JJ.

Round 4 Pick 25: Deiondre' Hall, CB, Northern Iowa (B)

I'm not as high on him, but there honestly was no other player I liked in this spot after the first three picks. I thought about doubling up on D-Line because I like Jihad Ward (who was available) but even if I'm not as high on Hall, he at least has attributes and upside worth taking in the 4th. I was hoping for Harlan Miller here but he was long gone apparently. Hall possesses the size that is coveted in today's NFL, and he would be a similar 4th rd pick of a raw CB like C. Allen, and I. Taylor in the past for the Steelers. He needs time to develop, but with the intangibles he has it wouldn't be hard to want to mold this kid and watch him grow into his possible potential. His combine/pro day will be key as I want to watch his hips and obviously his speed (40, 3 cone, etc.). His vertical will be important as well, because even if you have the size if you can't get up there to play the ball it's no use anyways.

Round 7 Pick 8: Tavon Young, CB, Temple (A-)

I'm really surprised Young was there, but given his size which will be harped on, it's not overly shocking either. This guy showed up at the Senior Bowl, and really caught my attention. He'll draw Antwon Blake comparisons, but this guy does a much better job of sticking to his WR and playing the pocket. He is feisty (again Blake comp) and extremely competitive, and can compete well with even bigger WRs. To grab a guy like Young in the 7th is tremendous value, and provides even more competition in that secondary which will only be better for the Steelers who will seek to improve in that area (and need to).

Round 7 Pick 25: Jake McGee, TE, Florida (D+)

Haven't watched much on McGee, but I hear good things. We could always use another potential TE prospect as Miller moves closer and closer to retirement. I've read that McGee shows a well rounded game and definitely flashes as a receiver. If nothing else he is a possible steal this late in the draft.

I agree, his value is more that of a 4th-5th rounder IMHO. I think with the right QB coach, he can improve and become a decent player, but our team doesn't develop QBs very well.

I really like it as long as we re-sign Gay and another decent FA CB. Maybe get a OLine player in the 7th instead of 2 CBs

With Heath retiring, Hunter Henry has to be a serious candidate if he is there at pick 25. Definitely going to draft a TE. Spaeth isn't that good. James should start over him already.

First Round 1995-Mark Bruener
Super Bowl appearance

First Round 2005-Heath Miller
Super Bowl Championship

Nice results after drafting a tight end in the first round.

If Henry is sitting there at 25, it will be tough not to take him now. It all depends on who is left on the board but he is the No. 1 rated TE in the draft. He could easily come in and start this year.

Stayed with improving the D and without trading (most realistic) on this one. Would have liked to have gotten a TE in round 3 or 4 but nothing decent was available. Not my best score but I would take this draft. It will be interesting to see how things go at the combine.

yeah I think I only traded once, as I know that could improve the score with more picks.

and also picking another team.

But I only play Steelers and don't do the trade thing often as I know the Steelers aren't big traders. Maybe one or two up or downs in a round.

like you got Reed and Ward... and picking up that G yinz think Foster is gone ?

Offseason

Steelers extend David DeCastro dropping cap number to 2 million this year. Steelers extend Timmons giving him money upfront but drop his cap number and allows the Steelers to part ways in 2 years with him. Steelers release Cortez Allen. Release Suisham if we can't trade. Steelers re-sign McLendon, Gay, Foster, and Robert Golden. Steelers sign Tyvon Branch Safety to a 3 year deal. Steelers Sign Brice McCain to a 2 year contract. Steelers sign Marcedes Lewis TE to a 2 year deal. Mark Barron S/LB 3 year deal.

Draft with trading down in the 3rd and picking up some mid-round picks we lost.
Round 1 Pick 25: Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State
Apple WILL NOT start or even contribute this year. I had a horrible choice so instead of taking a BS trade down I took a guy with big upside. Personally, I think he's too big of a risk but figure with signing McCain and re-signing Gay we don't need him to start this year or next.

Round 2 Pick 25: Su'a Cravens, OLB/SS, Southern California
Cravens would have to commit to being able to transition to safety and if so I would be happy taking him. He is a football player first and foremost and has a knack for making big plays.

Round 4 Pick 7 (S.F.): Scooby Wright III, ILB, Arizona
Need? No. I extended Timmons and signed Barron to play a hybrid S/LB position for sub packages. But I think this pick pushes Gavin off the team and he becomes a starter when Timmons retires in 2 seasons. He is a tackling machine and has a motor that doesn't quit. I have no doubt he is a special teams stud from day one.

Round 4 Pick 19 (BUF): Graham Glasgow, OG, Michigan
Talent. He has some off the field issues with alcohol but he hopefully has solved those. It's not marijuana or some other illegal drug so I take him in hopes he has cleaned up his act. Glasgow can play C, G, and OT in a pinch.

Round 4 Pick 25: Cyrus Jones, CB, Alabama
Jones is just a pure athlete who would immediately take over return duty. He's learning the position but looked good during the senior bowl.

Round 5 Pick 6 (S.F.): Victor Ochi, OLB, Stony Brook
Ochi is a pass rush machine and even though he needs some help in the run stop department he can immediately come in and be a pass rush specialist this year.

Round 6 Pick 16 (DET): Anthony Zettel, DE, Penn State
Zettel is an underrated player who plays the run and has a little ability to get the QB. Depth guy who will be a solid contributor day one.

Round 7 Pick 8: Avery Young, OT, Auburn
Young probably should have stayed in school one more year but athletically he fits Munchak and the zone system. He has good feet and can get to the second level very well.

Round 7 Pick 25: Ryan Malleck TE VT
Malleck is a very solid all around TE. He blocks very well, runs good routes and is very good in zone having a great working knowledge of finding holes and soft spots. He has very reliable hands. I think Lewis and James fill the roles of Miller and Spaeth while giving Ben two reliable targets and blockers and Malleck pushes for the #2 role in a year or two.

I think I filled all our holes with no big dollar free agents and filled depth with the draft but not relying on any of them to start this year unless injury.

Heavy D but wanted to get a couple O linemen to compete. Took a flier on a WR in the 7th.
