I still think Rudolph has a future in this league.
Let's face it, he didn't have a lot of help from the coaching staff or surrounding cast this season. The playbook was specifically designed for Roethlisberger, has been for years. The plays he likes. The plays he's good at. The whole evolution of the playbook in Pittsburgh over the last decade has been "What makes Roethlisberger happy".
You throw that into an aging line that regressed (like many of us here said could happen). Injuries and revolving door of players at ALL the skill positions - WR, TE and RB's.
And a bad coaching staff that isn't exactly known to "coach up" QB's or make them that much better than what they are.
Some day, Tomlin and his coaching staff are going to have to show me something without Roethlisberger. They have yet to ever do it. I've posted the stats from Tomlin's 34 games with backup quarterbacks (2 FULL SEASONS) and it's not good. The offense struggles EVERY TIME. Everything looks difficult. Scoring 20+ points is a chore. Games all become these war of attrition and defensive contests where if the defense doesn't come up big, we lose.
I don't know. I think Roethlisberger won't be what we are used to. I think the offensive line will continue to get worse. I think the skill position players are okay. This team is going to struggle to get to 2.0 points per possession next year in my opinion. Maybe that will be good enough to get us into the dance and who knows, maybe Roethlisberger has one more magic run in the playoffs.
This window is closing fast. And I don't think Tomlin is good enough for what comes next to be anything more than "good" occasionally.
