Defensive Gameplan against the Bengals

I’m not even emotionally invested anymore. I watch out of morbid curiosity, am pleasantly surprised if they win, unaffected by losses.

I know they have zero shot at a ring as long as Tomlin remains, saving my energy and emotion for the next regime.
Tomlin/Art did that to many of us. The worst thing that could happen this year would be them eeking out a playoff win like they did 18-16 vs the Chiefs and Alex Smith and Tomlin getting even more entrenched than he already is.

Tomlin would not be able to hold the “undefeated season” anywhere else. He has total control over obtaining what ever it takes to obtain that component of his career.

Here he has been able to get pretty good talent and free rein over everything, I seriously doubt any other franchise would be this accommodating to the ground hog routine. There are those teams that would accept it, but not at the cost of what the STEELERS are paying to achieve it.

Highest paid defense and this is what we get. I’m sorry, TJ Watt should have never gotten the biggest paid non-QB (at the time) renewal. He will NOT give return on investment, Cam is another overpaid defensive player. There are a few to follow, but that is how you get to the $$$$ part of over-pay.

Other team’s sub-coaching slowly leave until he had them weeded out to similar here.

Other than what he inherits form said team, will determine how fast he deaerates to lowering his standard of wins.

They shoulda ripped the band aid off after Jacksonville and this becomes more apparent every year. He was as lost that day as he was in Cinci.

At this point they should fire Austin and make Mike step up to the plate as acting DC. All these players that go to bat and claim to love him can report directly to him. No more scapegoats, no more shields. We all know it his defense, but let’s remove all doubt and have him show his prowess as this elite player’s coach or hit the bricks.

It is beyond put up or shut time for Mike.

Pittsburgh needs a “real hand in the pile” HC and the HC must be held accountable at some point. It’s not like he’s doing anything important on gameday, let him call the plays since he’s such a genius. It really can’t be worse than Austin.

I think even as little credit you give Austin, is still to much. I think Tomlin is already calling defensive, just not accountable to that identity / knowledge.

It’s been 10 years since the put up or shut up should have been enforced.

Tomlin called the defense when Butler was here. Butler even said so. Tomlin still calls the defense. He's a control freak.

I saw something from Kaboly and I can't find it. Anyway, it was in reference to the terrible gameplan Thursday night on defense and lack of adjustments. How the Steelers didn't jam and allowed all those quick hitters. So they put a picture up of the line of scrimmage of the play late in the game when Higgins beats Ramsey at the end. And in the still, Ramsey is right up on the line to jam Higgins.

I don't think anyone knows what they are talking about with this team. You don't know what to believe.

IMO…
And in my KISS reasoning that I like to apply on most things about sports and life for that matter..
Here yinz go:

Secondary… mostly the corners are past their or prime or overrated… I.e. Porter.
If pass rush is not disruptive.. at the very least with just pressures, the back end is extremely suspect.. especially the current corners.

Going forward we absolutely need to play Pierre, Echols, and Trice when healthy more.

I am really confused as to why Pierre doesn’t play more often and the coaching staff does not trust him.?
I know he ain’t Deion Sanders but imho, he makes plays and is usually at least in the wideouts same zip code!

I really love Trices potential and the small tape he has been able to show.. the kid just needs to stay healthy, and I believe he will be a solid starter in this league!

And draft a corner number one or two next year..

Just my 2 cents.

No matter how you slice it, the bottom line is pretty simple: the Steelers lack the players needed to execute the chosen scheme.

We've got a collection of over-30 former pro bowlers that can't play the way they used to be able to. To make matters worse, we're paying them huge $$.

Watt, when younger, had a similar effect as Lawrence Taylor on the 80s Giants teams... A single player who could change games. Those days are apparently gone.

Defense has allowed 30+ points in 3 of 6 games so far... Hard to imagine there won't be a bunch more given the list of upcoming opposing QBs on the schedule.

Pierre wasn’t that great when he played boundary before, definitely not pining for more of what he brings to the table. He’s a good special teamer, not starting caliber.

Trice has some potential but he got beat like a rented mule when up against Chase last year too.
He’s nice depth, if ever healthy, but not a guy I’d need to get reps for cuz his days in the NFL are likely numbered.

Echols does seem to be a decent slot addition.

The trio of Ramsey, Slay and Porter though…you nailed it with past their prime (Ramsey/Slay) and over rated (Porter).

So in the end they shelled out tons of money for groceries and have a cupboard stocked with past their expiration date products and overpriced name brands that aren’t that good.

I’m sure Tomlin’s genius will put together another great Steeler casserole though.

Just my 2 cents

That particular play was what Tomlin was scared about all game... Ramsey jammed him as per the austin D, but higgans still beat him up the sidelines... that play was on Ramsey, who lost sight of the ball and slowed up letting higgans get past him... but most of the game they were playing to keep that play from happening and handing them the slants and crosses

That would be about pedigree, I expect.

Players are old and the scheme is trash. Cam disappears every single time, Porter is trash, been saying it for years. Wilson was over drafted also.
Besides Flacco's beatdown of Porter and Ramsey
Steelers D gave up 9.8 ypc to Chase Brown who was averaging 2.8 ypc for the season.
Steelers gave up 32 points to Justin Fields and the 0-7 Jets

Who brought these players in ? This is the highest paid defense by like 20 million, and has been for 5 years, maybe the scheme is trash. The defense has had it's *** handed to it in big game for the past 10 years, over multiple DC's, multiple different players at every position except Cam.
IT'S F*CKING TOMLIN! Are we really going to blame the players for this pathetic record setting post season losing streak that's been going on for almost a decade???

Playing a 40 year old QB who is mostly immobile and been with the team for a week.

That sounds very much like a recipe for bringing pressure, forcing quick decisions from a QB who has limited time with the playbook.

Instead, Tomlin puts 2 d-lineman along with TJ and Highsmith into a 4 man front and stays with it most of the night??? They rushed 4 all night, got no pressure. On top of that, they lined up 245 pound OLBs over Cincinnati's OT and got blown off the line against the run. Of course, TJ and Highsmith are giving up 70-75 pounds each. Nobody wins that against the run. Worst, having a guy that much bigger pounding on you all night serves to negate your energy and stamina when trying to pass rush.

It's as if the Steelers lined up a defense that gave Joe Flacco every gentlemanly coureousy they could dream up.

Mike Tomlin is regularly out-coached. That's no news flash. But it's time that we stop saying he is a defensive coach. He doesn't appear to understand the basics of defensive football.
Don't know what you watched...but this is what REALLY should be discussed:

REFS screwed us. Period the end...
