Defense concerning, or big time?

This is what our D has accomplished:

Beat the Ravens at home, check.
controlled all 3 divisional victories, check.
Beat a top flight rushing attack with skill players at all positions, in KC, check
Beat a top flight passing attack with 2 weeks to prepare, on the road, check

I don't know what you guys want in a D, but I see a D that can win many different ways. Last night was a classic, bend but don't break, LeBeau game. Stats are great, but points against are the measure against a defense, and right now, the steelers haven't let up more than 18 points in regulation, in any game this season.

Think about that for a second. 8 games in, and this D only gave up 18 points, or less, in every game. Cleveland currently has the most regulation points scored on this D at 18!

This team doesn't need to score 30 points every game to win, it only needs 20.

It will need 50 to beat NE with the Kieth Butler zone special

Well, hopefully, Tuitt will be back by then.

The pass defense is decent now because we have corners who can cover and make plays a 3rd who's very solid in Hilton, and an old pro like William Gay.

Yeah, we have a soft cover 2 but its to prevent big plays. The Steelers got their hands on NINE passes last night, and Stafford has a top arm/accuracy.

New England doesn't have a lot of speed, so you'd think Butler would move the safeties a bit closer to the line of scrimmage.

You can play bend but don't break as long as you have guys that can create splash plays. And we've got plenty of them this year.

I think Butler is doing a good job, my only issues is Tomlin needs to give Harrison more snaps.

I personally could care less how many snaps Harrison plays until its money time...

Didn't give up a TD. I'll take that. Did we get gouged? **** yeah we did. The tackling looked ******, especially by the secondary. Lots of whiffs and I noticed a few big hits that didn't bring the ball carrier down. We need to wrap up and tackle. Big hits don't mean **** if they don't bring the person down.

Let's go through the progression of WHO makes the decision as to when/how much a player actually plays.

1. The determination is made by the position coach as he actually works with the player every practice. In this case, that's Porter. Personally I believe Porter has some issue with Deebo based on some of his comments over the last couple of years. But, that's just speculation.
2. After the position coach makes his informed recommendation, the Coordinator either approves or nixes it.
3. If the HC has to step in and change the determination made by the position coach and/or coordinator, the player they chose has to be really ******* up or the player the HC wants in must be significantly better in his opinion.
Is Harrison, at this point, really so much better than Watt that you'd stunt Watt's growth just to see Harrison on the field more? Really? smh
Now, I agree Deebo should be seeing the field more than Moats or Chick all things being equal. However, I'm not at practice, so I don't know what they're seeing. Hell, they might be trying to save the old warrior from himself.

Or they might see a player that is a liability in coverage now.

He has a bull rush. Use him as a pass rusher. I always will love me some Deebo.

But I think the end is near for him.

And perhaps that is what is being seen.

I disagree. While he is in the 11th hour of his career. What we are seeing in my opinion, is 1. Resting him for later. 2. The force play / gelling of young rookie who is pretty damn good. 3.. Getting a good look at chickillo. They know what they have in deebo and I don't believe he will be retained after this year.

not sure I buy the resting him for later theory. That would entail limiting his snaps not deactivating him for games.

I would always love for him to save the day, and get that crunch time sack. For me just for that reason he gets a nod.

But I think Chickillo has passed him on the depth chart. And what we are seeing is what happens to players that do get passed on the depth chart that don't play special teams.

I mean it sounds nice save him until we need him! Just not sure if that is entirely accurate.

Laying a egg is ******* losing.

The game I watched had them winning.

Some of yinz act like every ******* game needs to be a blowout.

If you don't go through speed bumps, you don't identify what works doesn't work needs improvement.

Etc.

The fact is the team finds ways to win.

When nobody and their mother expected a KC win, they won.

A strong passing team with two weeks to prepare, and they still shut down their proficient scoring O.

Ben is rebounding although I would still prefer he force a few less.

Of course you don't like those yards given up. But Detroit is pass capable and have shown that.

The Steelers went on the road against a fresh capable team and won a game a decent amount thought could be a trap game.

But ended up winning in spite of all the negatives.

As the positives outshined them.

You only have to score one more point than your opponent to win.

That is all that is important

A ******* win.

Enjoy them.

But! But! But! BUT!...

Don't look now but NE isn't exactly lighting up the scoreboard...

Right, and when we're all pissed off the Monday after they lay another 40-burger on us you can remind us of that for some warm and fuzzies

“When we were in those zone coverages,” Haden said, “(Stafford) was able to squeeze the ball into those tight windows. A lot of quarterbacks wouldn't even try the passes he threw.”

He said Stafford and Aaron Rodgers are the best at fitting a pass into tight coverage.

Linebacker Ryan Shazier said no one should be surprised at Stafford's success.

“He's not getting paid $135 million for no reason,” Shazier said. “He can put the ball where he wants. Some throws he makes, 70 percent to 80 percent of the quarterbacks in the NFL can't make.”

Stafford definitely fit some passes in, but there were a ton of wide open wr's. Wr's running through zones manned by LBs.

If any one thinks playing zone behind 2DL set and rushing 3 will work vs Brady, well I'm afraid you'll be extremely disappointed.

Carnell Lake Comfortable With Steelers Man-Coverage Ability Should It Be Needed

BY DAVE BRYAN OCTOBER 31, 2017 AT 04:33 PM

Despite all the offseason talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers defense possibly playing more man-coverage this year, we really haven’t seen very much of it all in the team’s first eight games of 2017. Because of that lack of usage of man-coverage so far this season, Steelers defensive backs coach Carnell Lake was asked on Tuesday to discuss why the defense hasn’t used it very much during the first half of the season.

“I think starting back when we were talking about playing more man was just in the event that we would play man, we would at least practice it and have the ability to dial it up when we needed to,” Lake said. “And I think that’s still the plan.”

Lake was then asked what his current comfort level with man-coverage is should he need to use it later in the season against a team such as the New England Patriots.

“You know, I’m comfortable with it,” Lake said. “I really am and we’ll continually evolve in that area. The thing about it is, we have a full playbook at our disposal now and it helps to have Joe [Haden], someone that has man-to-man coverage ability and really, that’s what it’s all about. If you’ve got guys that can cover man-to-man, you feel more comfortable about playing it.”

The Steelers mostly played zone coverage in their Sunday night win over the Detroit Lions and their quarterback Matthew Stafford attacked it with relative ease on his way to throwing for 423 yards on 27 total completions. Thankfully, the Steelers defense tightened up inside the red zone as the Lions failed to convert any of their five trips in that area of the field into touchdowns.

Moving into the second half of the season, the Steelers defense isn’t likely to use much man-coverage against most of the teams they’ll play because of the quality of quarterbacks they’ll likely go against. However, when the Steelers face the Patriots in Week 15, one would think and hope that’s when we’re sure to see a high usage of man-coverage as their quarterback Tom Brady will likely just pick their zone defense right apart if they don’t.

After their bye week, the Steelers will play the Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans and Green Bay Packers. The seemingly toughest quarterback they’ll face in those three games is Titans signal-caller Marcus Mariota. After those first three second half games the Steelers will then face the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals and the Patriots and all three of those offenses feature experienced quarterbacks who have faced the Steelers zone coverages several times during their careers.

While the Steelers pass rush has improved quite a bit this season, head coach Mike Tomlin can’t expect to constantly run zone coverages behind it the remainder of the season. In short, it sounds like we’ll see more man-coverage at some point during the final eight regular season games, we just don’t know exactly when that will be.

“We have to be able to mix it up. Man-to-man is going to be a part of that. It just is,” Lake said.

I'm ok with the redzone D. If our O could get some points for a lead, I'd be even more ok with the D.

Would love to see more pressure and man, but...not gonna happen. Need Ben and boys to stop punting and start scoring. PLEASE!

Taking it into context, I liked the Steelers defensive performance against the Lions.

This was the first time they got shredded in the passing game, yet they did not allow a touchdown in the process.

In contrast, the Seahawks are widely considered to be an elite pass defense, yet they could not keep the Texans out of the end zone as Deshaun Watson and his teammates bent them over the table this past Sunday.

Every defense has bad games, especially with the way the league is regulated now, but if Sunday night's game, where the Steelers allowed only 15 points, is their worst defensive performance through eight games, I'll take it.

If any one thinks playing zone behind 2DL set and rushing 3 will work vs Brady, well I'm afraid you'll be extremely disappointed.

Pass pressure is crucial to stopping any productive passing attack - Lions, Pats, whoever. The Steelers pass rush was not what I had hoped for against the Lions' banged-up offensive line, but I am going to credit that to their having a bye week and 2 weeks to prepare pass protection.

But the pass pressure needs more than just scheme to pressure the QB. It also needs guys just beating an OT or G. Heyward can do that. Hargrave can do that. Tuitt can do that. Those guys need a lot of playing time. Add Watt, Harrison and/or Dupree to the rush, and I believe that the needed pass pressure will follow.

Maybe Ben needs some eye of the tiger and he should go back to Millagevillevill, where he seemed to score at will.............

I don't disagree, but if we rush 3 and they keep a TE or RB in to block, that's a double team on each of our pass rushers.
