College Football Week 6

Not doubting they probably are the best team but their schedule is not a powerhouse this year
I think its between Oklahoma and Ohio State so far. Oklahoma has wins against michigan and auburn and has only given up 35 points in 5 games. Ohio State has only given up 25 points in 5 games. They have wins against Washington, Minnesota, and an over-rated Texas team. OSU should run the table, but they are good for a brain fart game or 2. Oklahoma has a very tough remaining schedule. 3 teams currently in the top 10 and 4 in the top 15. Texas will / should be out of the top 10 though which is there next game

Danielson did say that and it’s beyond stupid. He’s injured. Why would he sit out to transfer? He’s already a starter and featured player on a defense that showcases him.
I think Franklin mentioned unity in the post game - well, he has it - everyone wants him gone.

Franklin is a mediocre coach as Tomlin is. They excel with player relations. In college, that is more important than the NFL, but you still need to be able to win the big games.

Texas and Penn St. fall out of the Top 25 in the AP Polls...I'm shocked.
Im surprised they fell out of the top 25 both have had close losses against top teams. PSUs loss to UCLA was inexcusable but it was still a close game. I guess PSU has not looked good in the first half against terrible teams in a couple games. Texas has certainly not looked like a powerhouse at all and they get Oklahoma next week who doesnt seem to be getting much respect. Oklahmoa dropped a spot to Texas A&M after a 44-0 win w/o their starting QB. Mateer appears likely to at least mix the Texas game.

Penn State's last athletic director was awful. She was friends with Franklin and gave him a contract extension with a ridiculous buyout on her way out the door. They now have an excellent AD who is getting things in order.

I think Franklin would be fired today if not for that buyout. I hope the AD is calling around to boosters trying to scare up the cash. Maybe he can negotiate a buyout for Franklin.

The decline of the OL is insane. They returned one of the best units in the country and somehow this year, they can't block anybody. Tyler Warren was a good blocker, but new started Khalil Dinkins is mainly a blocking TE, so that's not the issue.

The RB usage is criminal. This isn't like using Najee more than Warren. This is like using Benny Snell over Lev Bell.

NFL drafts upside not production when it comes to QB. I still think Allar will be a 1st round pick. Mateer has looked good but he may not have an NFL arm. He may fall like Will Howard and DIllon Gabriel.

I'd bet that coaches see Allar's footwork related accuracy issues as very fixable. I think what Allar has to show most to stay in Rd 1 is mental toughness. Penn State has been so buttoned up that he plays timid. Maybe now with nothing to lose, they will let Allar be more of a gunslinger.

The rare times they do that, Allar looks good. He looked good vs UCLA, more confident. He threw a dime for the TD to Hudson. He also threw what should have been another TD that hit the TE in both hands. He had to jump so not an easy catch but he got 2 hands on it. Warren would have had that one.

Nico may claw his way back up draft boards. He has 1st round ability. Penn State's defense was bad but Nico threw some dimes and showed his mobility.

Maybe but, they won the natty champ last year, and this replacement qb sayin is the real deal.

why we doubting on Ohio st,?

Lost EIGHT defensive starters, all drafted, and their DC and they’re even better. The offense can run and pass, Sayin’s smarts and accuracy are off the charts.

This may be his weakest trait. The coaches don't trust him in big moments and Allar has thrown INTs in crunch time in his biggest games. He has the physical tools to be good , but lacks the gunslinger mentality.

That 4th down call at the end of the game.....2 stud RBs, against the worst running defense in the nation.....

And you try to run that *#%$....

This is why, they can be preseason #1, and I will be like.......Ok whatever......

And then we have to go through the *#&$ with the Steelers every year.

Between the Steelers and PSU they have robbed me of most of my sports passion.

I dont even get worked up about it anymore.

Franklin gets the team so hyped and tight for the big game that they have a hangover the next week. Common occurrence, it's just that UCLA is so bad that it really stands out this time.

Let somebody be the interim. Then go get a young OC that's hungry. Hell...where did Oregon find their guy? A really good Div 2/ FCS type guy that deserves a big time school. Young and upcoming.
Oregon found Dan Lanning at the University of Georgia, where he was their defensive coordinator from 2019-2021, and coming off of a national championship.

DC Jim Knowles scheme was fine. He adjusted throughout the game, brought blitzes, had a spy. The problem was not scheme, it was the players missing tackles and being out of position over and over.
I agree with most of what you said in the rest of your lengthy assessment post, but I couldn't let this go by. Jim Knowles' scheme was not fine. He adjusted throughout the game? WTF were you watching? He got schooled throughout the game by a guy who just found out last Tuesday that he'd be calling plays for the first time in his life. The only reason Penn State even had a chance at the end was because #6 for UCLA fell down on his own short of the line to gain with no Lion defender within five yards of him. They gave up 42 points to a team who scored 10 against the New Mexico Lobos three weeks ago. But yeah, it was all the players' fault. Nothing to see here.

And if you thought Allar had a "great game," you are truly delusional. As far as that "TD that hit the TE in both hands" you were crying about: ANY competent high school quarterback puts that unpressured throw right where it needs to be to Reynolds in the end zone -- right on his face mask, not two feet over his head.

Did the announcer's allude to the fact that the Tony Rojas "injury" might be a ploy to get out with his full year of eligibility intact? When is the next portal?
I have no idea what the commentators were trying to insinuate, but I can assure you without a shadow of a doubt that Tony Rojas, unfortunately, has a very serious injury. There is no ploy.

Knowles had no film to prepare for an unknown OC, so he had to adjust on the fly. I do give him a bit of slack for that. He did bring blitzes and later he did spy. He should have done a spy sooner and i'm sure if he played them again, he'd do some things differently. But what scheme covers up for your undersized DTs getting overpowered and your replacement LB not making plays? Both LBs are undersized as well.

My point was the defense just got physically whipped. UCLA's OL dominated. UCLA just played harder all game. They picked up the stunts and blitzes all game. Going forward, my concern on defense is the lack of physicality and size, not playcalling. I wish it was just playcalling.

As for the Allar pass to Reynolds, maybe I'm remembering it wrong. The play I'm thinking of was down the sideline into the endzone and a DB was underneath it so it had to be elevated. It wasn't a perfect throw but he got 2 hands on it. In any case, Allar completed 73% with 2 TDs and ran for 78 yards. He wasn't perfect but i'd call that a really good game.

Despite his faults, and even if you doubt he'll be a good NFL QB, the fact is that he's one of the best QBs in college football and Penn State is getting little production from him. Every week there are QBs with far less talent who throw to WRs who are schemed open and it drives me crazy that Penn State can't figure out a way to do that. Even in this game, against a bad defense, it was a chore. And they're wasting WR Devonte Ross. They should use him like Oregon used Tez Johnson last year.
