College Bowl/Playoff Thread

The bowl season is very lackluster the early bowls are only viewed by fans of the teams playing and then not all that intently. Even the big bowl games that used to generate excitement don't' any longer because there are only two games of significance and they were stinkers last night. If I were running the NCAA I would shorten the regular season by having teams remove one cupcake out of conference game and then put 16 teams in the season ending tournament this means you need four weekends to determine the champion. The conferences that have a championship game would still be done on the same weekend as the current end of season. You need 15 games to leave one team as champion so pick 15 bowls and make them part of the National Championship and play the games in 4 weeks. Now 15 bowls have meaning and you will certainly get more sports fans viewing because each game is a win or go home. I might watch the "What's A Matter U" bowl game if the #4 and $5 teams are playing to move on. I'm not wasting my time watching that bowl game if Northwestern Nowhere University is playing Southeastern Overhere University.

I get wanting to place the importance on the games, but this is overthinking things in my opinion. I watch a majority of the bowl games not because they mean anything, but because it's college football and we get a lot of unique matchups that we otherwise wouldn't get a chance to see. No way could you have that many games at neutral locations and expect large crowds unless the host city fills up the stadium. Fans can't afford that type of travel over a month.

I'll use Pitt as a for instance, since I'm a grad. Their final game was 11/27 (the championship game was a week later, 11/27 would be championship weekend), if they reduce the regular season by 1 game, then Pitt is done 11/21 and the championship game would be 11/27 - 11/29 timeframe. The NCAA now has 7 weeks to play the necessary games in my scenario above to crown the champion. They could play almost every other week and still be done on or around the same day they will be done this year with the champion. Now 15 bowl games are generating greater revenue, interest is far higher by the casual fan and you get a true champion.

I'd rather have that extra home game that you are talking about dumping AND a bowl game to watch. Plus, if you bump up the bowl schedule, travel to the game would be tougher ahead of the holiday. A lot of people take time off between Christmas and New Year, which makes it very convenient to travel to these games.

The Irish had too much whiskey last night.

Notre Dame is in bad shape with their starting safety and best corner out, and now their best defensive player Jaylen Smith done for the day...Sucks...

I thought the Fiesta Bowl was the best match up of the bowl season....

Oh well...

Well, I rooted for Pitt. Maybe next year. They should be interesting in the coming years with the new coach.
Hoping PSU wins on Sat.
Glad FSU lost. Hope Florida loses too.
Notre Dame may be in for a long day .... OSU knows they pissed away this year and are wanting to go out on a high note to make up for their missed opportunity.
I think Clemson - Alabama will be a game, but I see the Tide coming out on top by at least 7.

Bosa just ejected from the game for Targeting. WOW!!!

Maybe the NCAA wanted a balanced game?

OSU's Bosa ejected for 'targeting'... Wow!! Might be game changer.

It was targeting by definition...

This really sucks though for those of us that looked forward to watching the first two defensive players taken off the board in the draft this year....Bosa and Jaylen Smith...
Smith's injury looks bad..

That's the definition of targeting. If that isn't targeting then there is no targeting.

Does anybody choose to return for their senior season anymore? Doesn't seem like it.

I think he was big factor as the defense was focused on stopping him and got compromised.

Aren't you the one who said the Big 10 is much better than the SEC? Why would one play make a dominant Big 10 team lose to a lesser SEC team?

It was bait, I later admitted as much. Overall, I think the Big 10 is the better conference this year, but I think Alabama is better than any Big 10 team after last night. MSUs character was exposed.

Tenn is beating Northwest by almost 40 points. The only Big 10 win against the SEC is going to be Michigan against a depleted and bad Florida team. I don't see the big 10 being that good.

Vader, you know the SEC will never get credit for its success. The other conferences think they can equate to us but we know the truth.

Like you said, if Florida had Will Grier at QB, Michigan gets pummeled...

I know most on here are big 10 team fans. But all the bitching about how bad the SEC was this year and how great the big 10 was, was uncalled for IMHO. Most of the SEC teams are playing teams ranked ahead of them. Northwestern, who many on here thought was a great team, was ranked 13th going against a 23rd ranked Tenn team. They got beat by almost 40 points. Hell the Big 10 should be mowing them down. Like I said, the only game where the big 10 is doing anything against the SEC is the Michigan game and that's because Florida is depleted and doesn't have an offense.

Harbaugh has them coached up. He doesn't care who's playing QB.

Harbaugh is a good coach but they got destroyed by OSU and had to go to OT to beat Indiana so they aren't some great team that can't be stopped. Florida is just a bad team and everybody has known that for months since their QB was lost.

So what SEC teams would beat Ohio State and Iowa?

Sorry Pap. I watch most of them, and it's not out of loyalty. I graduated from SDSU and didn't even watch them dominate in their bowl this year. It's a great sport, and I love the bowls. Going to watch many of them today.

I just don't think that most people do this, that's my opinion, I have no proof what so ever other than nearly every person I know isn't the least bit interested in any bowl games except the ones that will help determine the champion. The minor bowls are just that and draw very little to the stadiums and probably a small TV audience. I just think making 15 of the bowls more meaningful to more people will only help college football overall, maybe not, as someone mentioned, travel for the teams that continue to win will be tough for those schools.

I like watching football but I can't watch a game that is basically pointless; I'd rather watch the rerun of a movie I like or a hockey game or just about anything else. That's just me and I very well could be the minority here, maybe more fans are like you that enjoy the game for the game regardless of whether it helps determine the national champion or not.

If the fans that would go to one bowl game still go to one playoff game and different set of fans go to the second playoff game and a third set of fans go to the third and finally some go to the championship game, now you actually have more fans traveling to the games than before provided your team keeps winning. Even if they lose the first round those fans still saw a game just as if they played one bowl game. If they win the first game different fans will go to watch the second game in person plus those capable of traveling again. I think the fans traveling would actually work out better because now more fans have the opportunity to travel to a game.

I doubt it will ever come to fruition, but from the standpoint of important football which is more fun to watch than just playing a bonus game because a team was 6-5 I like my idea.

Pappy

You may not watch, but people are watching bowl games more than the regular programming, which is why I believe ESPN televises so many.

You can blame me. I am rooting for Iowa. Of course they get stomped.

I'm watching Stanford and Iowa and have no affiliation to either but find myself pulling for Iowa. I have no reason too root for them but I think I am pulling for them because their uniforms look similar to the Steelers and I am used to rooting for those colors. I was curious if anyone else felt this way. BTW Iowa is losing 21-0 right now.

Also when I was younger I rooted for Clemson just because I lived on a street named Clemson. I do silly things like this.
