My opinion of what will happen:
1. The team will re-sign Darius Heyward-Bey. Somewhere in the $800k-$1 million/season range.
2. The team will keep Wheaton at least through and into training camp. We will offer a very low-value deal, which Wheaton will reject.
3. Depending on depth during training camp (we could draft another WR or someone emerges) and how Sammie Coates is playing, Wheaton could become expendable for the right price, but I really doubt it.
Based on their MO, the team will likely let him ride out his contract and use his signing elsewhere to hopefully work into a compensatory pick in 2018.

Actually I ended up watching almost no regular season football at all. I've watched about 30-40% of the playoff games to date.
Watching a lot of Premier League on Saturday mornings. That's my thing now. Coffee and a 2-hour game with no commercials. Better than you think once you watch a few games in a row and get to know the players.
Rooted against the Steelers (hope they would lose) every game. Still angry over the Vick hire and that's probably never going to change.
Honestly sounds like I didn't miss much. Been crunching some statistical numbers on the Steelers just to fill in the blanks on their season and looking forward to seeing how they build from here.
Looks like the offense could be very good next year. Coach Munchak continues to look like the MVP. The improvements in the offensive line numbers are super impressive over the last three seasons and getting better. It's amazing how a good offensive line opens things up for all sorts of potential.
Very impressed with 48 sacks this year from the defense and 30 turnovers forced. Those numbers covered up a lot of stink on the defensive side of the ball.
The defensive numbers might be misleading. We played 7 backup QB's. The red zone defensive numbers were skewed statistically by an abnormally large 13 fails (no FG or TD) out of 57 trips. Not sure that's skill or luck and think it corrects itself next season.
Roster building begins soon. Hopefully we can improve the back end of the roster, get some prospects that are legit development NFL talents and stay healthy for a playoff run next year.

Oddly enough I thought this was one of the more enjoyable seasons to watch in recent years. The locker room seemed to grow and come together more as the season progress and reached another level after the loss in the playoffs. Definitely gave you a good feeling about the team moving forward.
Close enough Del, he's done pulling game checks.
You did miss an interesting year though. I was riveted by the end. Ben had 3 hits that looked like year enders. The dude just kept coming back! The Cincy-Pit games are the new dirty games to watch. The last 2 were rivalry starters.
Offense looks great, and the D is improving. Should have bet you on the sack over/under when I was all for the over. Didn't know it would be this good though. Another year, and some more talent in the secondary, and this team will be tough to beat.

As we discussed way back when, Butler went old-school and started blitzing his secondary. I think that was a great help. Lebeau/Tomlin had moved away from that the last couple of seasons. We had 7 sacks from DB's this season, which is one of the highest in Tomlin's tenure.
I think Butler definitely went back to "Blitzburgh" at times from the look of it.
I did watch about 75% of the Cincinnati - Pittsburgh playoff game. How Cincinnati blew it I have no idea. Burfict was the hero-in-waiting after his interception. But Cincy shot themselves in the foot THREE times in a row. Almost impossible to do that but they deserved what they got. Did not play with composure down the stretch or acted like they've done it before. That's on Marvin Lewis.
Remember, I wanted to draft Burfict for here. Still think he'd be a different type player in our locker room vs. theirs but that's another debate. Based on just that last game, he's much dirtier than I would accept from a player (and I'm old school enough to want some of that on the field). That knee to the shoulder of Roethlisberger was a very dirty wrestling move. And the knockout hit on Brown was awful. He's probably the dirtiest player in the league now and deserves the 3-game suspension. If he doesn't reign that in, he's jeopardizing a potential good career.
It does sound like Cincy - Pittsburgh will replace Baltimore - Pittsburgh as the bloodiest rivalry in football next year.

The problem with the NFL is that "good, intelligent, middle-class kids", black or white, aren't going to be playing football much longer. The concussion thing is going to change everything.
The dregs of society are going to be the only ones looking at the risk/reward as worth it (like boxing). That and foreigners (which is why the NFL is so intent on making the game international).
The NFL is in a very big conundrum. The concussion issue is taking away one segment of their player base and the public opinion/personal conduct policy is taking away another.
There is no doubt, looking at the long term health of football in this country, that their potential workforce is shrinking.
Chris Borland, Vontaze Burfict..... both different sides of a coin that 20 years ago play in this league for a long time. Not anymore.

I disagree. In hindsight I would have taken the pick but if (as the Steelers thought/hoped) were going to make a deep run into the playoffs you don't let one of your top WR's go.

Actually Coach I don't think the Steelers did mishandle Sanders. They passed on a late 3rd rounder and got a 60 catch season out of him before finally losing him to Denver in free agency. He has certainly shown since why they tried to keep him. Potential is great but when you are going for a SB production is better.

Imagine if we would have taken the late 3rd and picked a dri archer while Sanders makes a record season with manning...
Sanders would have been with Brady.
Plus the 3rd round pick we would have got was 4 slots before the Dri Comp Pick. No value in the draft there. We got lucky with Bryant in the 4th, but he's STILL a high risk/high reward player.

Wheaton for a 3rd round pick better than ours or Wheaton and our second for a pretty high second would both be deals I'd look to get. We can also roll the dice on a WR in the later rounds. Bryant is the guy I would want to make a commitment to, but that would be based on him staying clean and continuing to improve his game.
No, he wouldn't. Burfict was a vile, dirty player in college, and is a vile, dirty player in the NFL.

I do not understand why the league is not investing more in evolutionizing helmet technology. That's the one thing that could turn the tide back in their favor.
I think that the problem is that technology cannot prevent the forces that cause brain injury. When the brain experiences sudden acceleration/deceleration, then brain trauma occurs. If the brain experiences that sudden acceleration/deceleration just once - as in a car accident, for example - then the chance of brain injury is pretty low. However, when the brain experiences that trauma repeatedly, covering dozens or even hundreds of occasions over a span of decades - then an improved helmet is not going to prevent brain injury.
It will likely help reduce the extent of brain injury for each occurrence, particularly minor collisions, but there just is no way for a helmet to protect the brain from moving inside the skull, and from causing acceleration/deceleration injury.
There is one way to basically eliminate brain injury and concussion from football: Eliminate helmets. Players will no longer use the helmet to initiate or absorb impact.

I saw coats at training camp thought he was one of the linebackers. He's a big chiseled dude. It's going to be interesting to see how his career goes... He's got the tools but will he get his chance and if he does does will he make the best of it... Wheaton? He's had his day hes a yawner.
Go away. I would respect your stance against the Steelers / Vick if you went away forever, but it's an absolutely pathetic display of attention-whoring to sit out a season and then pretend all is good now that Vick is off the team. The people that had absolutely no problem welcoming Vick into the Steelers family (ARII, Tomlin & Colbert) are all still here. So stop acting like a pathetic **** and beat it.
