Coates and Wheaton

Would you trade Wheaton for a 3rd round pick

Good points overall.

But I'd say Wheaton is a so-so No. 2, and better-than-average No. 3. He's not ready for prime time and struggled against the Broncos.

I think Bryant has more upside.

there's no doubt about his better upside, the problem is if he gets up and High again

And Coach, no need to start a new thread on Beckham. I've started the dialogue in 2 different threads.

No worries, I don't do soccer. Pun intended.

Oh and FYI, we received a 6th round comp for our Free Agents with Sanders.

But we could have had a 3rd round pick if we let New England have him. Comp picks are based on how much you lose, and who you sign.

I added a poll for the Wheaton trade.

I absolutely hate the idea of trading Wheaton. If we do that and Martavis falls off the wagon (he would be suspended for the entire season), then we have AB, Coates and not much else. Didn't this year prove how important it is to have quality depth? Furthermore, we're not going to get much in return for Wheaton. Does any team view him as a #1 WR? No way. Some teams probably see him as a #3. You don't get anything in return for a #2/#3 WR with one year left on his contract.

I saw that, I voted!

Wheaton last year, had nearly the same productivity as Sanders did in his last year with us. 700 yards and 5 to 6 TDs respectively. Now in hindsight, not only was it good to keep Sanders for production, but we probably should have retained him to a second contract. Since he became a top 10 receiver in Denver. So NE getting a top 10WR for a 3rd round pick would have been a coup, and this board would be KILLING Tombert for that move. I personally think Sanders numbers would be better than his Denver numbers, if he was in NE.

Now on to the draft pick: we would have picked 4 picks before our Archer Pick. Not a lot of value. Maybe we draft Cockrell? Who knows. What I do know is Bryant would not have been as productive as Sanders if he had to play as a rookie. Now Bryant is a threat, but he's as much a threat to score a TD, as he is to score a 6mos suspension. I don't trust the guy, and I don't bank on him to carry the receiving corps by dumping Wheaton for a question mark in the third round. Wheaton improved this year, and became a reliable target to move the chains and make plays. He's staying unless I can get a better vet receiver for him.

?......... 5 WIDE *******!!! game plan for when the inevitable RB injury happens.

It is also quite helpful going into a draft where we need DL, pass rush, and secondary help to not have to focus on WR. Take a late WR with return potential and keep Wheaton. This will allow us to go D on 3 of our first 4 picks.

Take notice people, this is perfect format and punctuation. Nice job, Fiji

Wheaton would be a solid #2 WR on most teams, and he may be the Steelers fourth best WR next season, if what Coats showed in Denver is any indication of what he can expect from him.

It is easily the deepest, most talented group of receives in the league. Why trade any of them?

Roethlisberger cannot be surrounded with too many weapons. With Bell returning, the 2016 offense could be stupid good.

One other side note: Tyler Murphy is the only member of our practice squad who has not signed a futures contract with us. So - for those people who were excited about Murphy's potential - it would seem that he wants to go somewhere else that gives him more of an opportunity to earn a roster spot / playing time.

Yes it is I've been there..but I work on the weekends now have been for a year or so now. I usually watch on my huge phone or the 50 inch TV if we are on TV here locally.

We have to get a NJ/EPA SN viewing party for a game!

Practice what you preach :)

This is a valid topic. If your attention span waines, I can create a trade thread for Odell Beckham Jr.

This thread is pure speculation.

The risk of trading your #3, who BTW, can be a #2 in case of an injury, is silly.

I wonder if the Rams fans made such suggestions when they had the Greatest Show on Turf???

The reason it's being brought up is because we think we have someone in Coates that can step in and take over for Wheaton.

It's not going to happen for so many reasons 1) Wheaton can play both inside and outside (like AB) but there's no evidence that either Coates or Martavis has such flexibility 2) getting a late 3rd round pick (a realistic return for Wheaton) doesn't move the needle for a team that's thinking "win now" vs. "let's stockpile draft picks so we have a shot in 2018" 3) they can't possibly be 100% certain that Martavis will walk the straight and narrow....if he screws up we could still have a 3-headed monster with Brown, Wheaton & Coates.

Just another example of Madden GMs with too much time on their hands...

Based off one game. Did we not learn anything from the injuries we suffered last year. I'd rather have a motivated Wheaton on the last year of his deal then some rookie. If he shows out and earns a big contract we get a nice comp pick.

I'm not saying do it, just playing both sides, I can see an arguement for both sides, wheaton had 44 catches, and he runs the wrong route quite often, so I'm not going to say we have a 3 headed monster with him. The three headed monster will be Bryant, Brown, Bell. I agree on Bryant staying out of trouble.

I'd trade him for a third if we planned on signing a solid veteran receiver to replace him for the reasons you stated. He is serviceable, but nothing special.

Both players are teasers with only a hint at what they can really do. But that said coats is a stud and Wheaton has had his day in the sun he could be the next sanders.

To me, Wheaton really isn't special as a WR. He is the 3rd option in a stacked WR corps. He is serviceable for sure, but his gaffes nearly equal anything awesome he does. I guess my point is that he isn't irreplaceable.

Would definately trade Wheaton for a 3rd rd pick.

money post, keep the team as competitive as possible for Ben, And we know injuries do happen

I'd keep Wheaton. AB, Bryant, Wheaton, & Coates. We need to keep our depth somehow and Heyward Bay is gone.

We have a team that should be a SB contender next year because of it's offense and you want to trade a 50 catch wr for a 3rd rd draft choice? I think around 50% of 3rds make NFL rosters and our replacement hasn't started a game yet. Let's look at next year before worrying if you can keep Wheaton for 2017.

Question: In recent years what former Steelers WR after leaving the team (to get paid), had similar if not better numbers in a different system and a QB other than Ben Roethlisberger?
