Correct me if I’m wrong but the job of the head coach is not normally X’s and O’s   
Those details are what the coordinators are for and they also handle play calling. Although the coordinators answer to the head coach.
With that said, the head coach really doesn’t NEED to be a former player or even coach for that matter. The most important job of a head coach is to be a good motivator and someone who can manage guys with big egos. Someone who can keep everyone in line and get the most out of someone.
I guess what I’m saying is maybe it would be ok to look for someone not currently in football but has knowledge of the game. As long as they have the qualities you want and it translates into another profession it shouldn’t matter.
