Bucs fire Lovie Smith

Forgot about the Black Monday thread. Merge please

Now is the Rooney's chance to fire Tomlin and hire a real coach. /sarcasm

I will bet that if we win vs the bengals, Smith is here giving us a hand before the season's end... the guy is a good friend of Tomlin.

Lovie Smith took the Bears to the Super Bowl with an Assbucket QB.

That's all I'm saying.

Agree. He's not the greatest coach in the world, but that was easily the worst qb ever to make the big game. They had a rookie qb this year, on a rebuilding team. What did they expect? Imagine if in 1970, Dan Rooney had said, "Chuck, you're 6-22 in two years. That's not acceptable. We're going in a different direction."

Thats a point i love to raise. Unless you brought a coach into a built contender, making any judgement after one or two years is idiotic.

The Bucs are stupid seemed as if they were showing signs of improvement.

He seems like a guy that could at least motivate their young talent.

good luck to you Mr. Smith as you received a very short hand shake there in tampa bay. Could he help the steelers in a reduced assistant capacity...??? If so, HIRE him.

Salute the nation

Got to be more to the story than performance.

Yeah, they want this guy...

New owner, wants his own guy. I can't see ever giving a coach less than 3 years, unless the wheels come like it did in Cleveland with Pettine. Lovie is one of those Marty type coaches. You'll win with him, but only to a certain level. Hell, let him get the team going, and if he doesn't get over the hump, then replace him while the team is still good.

Has any college guy got it done since Jimmy Johnson? Pete Carroll was an NFL guy who went to college, and then came back. Spurrier failed, despite spending a decade in the NFL as a player. Saban? FAIL! Chip Kelly? FAIL!

That's how Cleveland does it and we see how it works.

Maybe they were more worried about losing Koetter than keeping Smith

It's hard not to feel for Smith.

He was fired after a 10-6 season with the the Bears, just two years removed from an NFCC game appearance, and he definitely deserved another year with the Buccaneers.

As others have mentioned, they must have someone else in mind whom they're confident they can land.

It's good news for one of the other teams without a coach. He could help TN or Clev.

I hadn't considered that they wanted a specific replacement.

I wasn't sold on Lovie when he came here. I know he has had some success, but he had stepped into a huge pile, I wasn't sold on anybody improving that lot anytime soon. Lovie seemed to have been building a good core of players and the team was improving. Too bad he wasn't given more time.

I wrote in the other thread: Glazer lost his locker room with this move. The players are really upset about this.

Winston and Lovie had a real connection. Now not only has he lost his mentor, but he's going to get sandbagged with a new offense to learn, setting back his progress.

Steve Mariuchi said he's the smartest QB he's ever evaluated coming out of college, but that don't change the fact that switching systems tends to really **** up young QBs.

Terrible move by Tampa. Shades of Tyrone Willingham at ND.

I'm not sure about him having to learn a new offense, as their offensive coordinator is speculated to be the favorite for the job.
