Bryant skips drug test; facing full season suspension

I myself deal with depression issues and ptsd and things from two wars. It does control my life sometimes and I do lock out the world. So if he is dealing with these things I understand, I also smoked weed when I was young and in school so I understand what the kid is going through. I wish him the best and hope he gets his meds straight. It's taken me a long road to get mine straight and I still can't return to work. God bless ya kid.

Common sense. People act like whatever the kid did, he went out there and did it to spite them personally. I don't understand why it seems that hard, but I ain't walking in his shoes, either. I was lucky. I grew up with while not much money, great parents. I was able to go to a school in which I was able to get any education I wanted to work for, without having to worry about all kinds of extraneous bullshit. We have to remember that as good as these kids are athletically, many of them have for **** family lives and due to lack of education, among other things, they just aren't that smart.

I don't think fans think he did things in spite.

I think fans think he can't follow rules set in place for every player.

A lot of NFL players have hardships and can follow the rules.

Bryant was given a pass by many his first time around of failing two tests.

I am sure most wish him the best. But most also don't want problems that might distract the teams focus.

Especially being so close to doing something special.

The depression route is a good throw at people for the sympathy angle.

But I am afraid I am fresh out.

Go puff the magic dragon by the sea far away from me.

I believe there's deeper issues..maybe something from childhood....personal loss, parental neglect, psych trauma.....we don't know.....nor do we need to know. Sad that this is his way of coping with whatever haunts him. Just hope it doesn't end with him on skid row, some back alley or death from suicide. Delonte West from the NBA washed out the league over depression and drugs and has been seen around Houston,TX neighborhoods looking rancid, stoned and ridiculous

Martavis isn't stupid...hes deeply troubled. Tomlin and Rooneys will see to it that hes getting the best help he can. I'm sure Ben will be by his side and encourage him.

It is important to understand there is a difference between sympathy and refusing to stomp on the kid when he is down. I really don't have sympathy, either. I agree with what you said, for the most part. I don't understand why a kid would throw away what he potentially has. However, I try to take into account things that I do not know, and try not to kick him, either. I just think there are some that enjoy kicking him.

I think people who are in a fine state of mind look at this and go what a selfish person, what a moron. He threw away his gift that I would kill to have. I look at it and say, what a poor soul. He knows that too and he can't help himself. To some extent, the same applies to Manziel, though he seems to be more of a party frat boy ********. I'm sure he would rather be Tom Brady. He just can't.

With this I tend to be all over the place. Earlier in this thread, I made the true statement about the fact that even if they would legalize weed in every state, the NFL could still say, just like any business, we do not want our employees doing it. But I was thinking, what the hell is the NFL trying to prove? Do they really think suspending Martavis Bryant or Josh Gordon is going to stop some kid somewhere from burning? Do people even look at the NFL like maybe we did when we were kids in the '60s and '70s and still have that naivety thinking these guys, at least our teams guys, are better than other teams guys? Ray Rice will never play in the NFL again, for example. But everyday I turn on the TV and see a probable woman abuser and rapist stumping for his wife on the campaign trail. So NFL players are held to higher standards than ex-Presidents or even people running for the office?

I am disappointed in some of the things I have read here . Depression is not a thing to take lightly . I myself have not experienced this but I have known people that have to deal with Manic Depression . Not saying that this is what Bryant is dealing with but any kind of depression is bad, Think about it .. some people deal with it by eating , some deal with taking drugs and some cannot deal at all. I have a friend that lost her child because of depression. Look at the papers , how many teenagers or young adults have you seen in the news that have died at their own hands .. mainly because of depression.

Depression has no bounds , it doesn't care where you live, how much talent you have or how much money you make.

Don't be so judgmental, you never know what you may encounter during your life.

And believe that the classiest team in the NFL knows what the deal is and will do what ever is necessary to help him ...

an after thought:

it is often the most talented that have the most problems -- look at Robin Williams .. he suffered with depression FOR YEARS .. he tried to compensate it with Humor .. we all though he was talented and wonderful and everything was great .. when in reality it was a daily struggle for him .

Draft Braxton Miller. He's the best WR in this class. I have a feeling he will go in rd 2 so it may not be possible to get him. I like Leonte Caroo of Rutgers too. He may be available later.

If it truly is a depression thing then he needs to get help and get healthy, hopefully that is not just a selfish person's way to garner sympathy as depression is not to be taken lightly. The odd thing is one of the best medicines for depression can be marijuana and it needs to legalized and acceptable as a form of treatment, sadly the pharmaceutical industry is to blame in part for the criminalization of one of natures most powerful medicines. The US needs to get over this stigma of the dangers (nonexistent) of this medicine, until then people who suffer from many ailments are criminals rather than healing patients.

Get right US, get right Martavis

The league should also allow teams to do testing at the facilities for people in the substance abuse program because people with these problems need all the help they can get. Don't give people who need help an easy out to just skip required tests. Have a league certified tester provided at the facility to administer tests when the player is already on the premises, don't even try to claim they don't have the money to do this with the insane amount of salary the *** hat in chief Goodell's is raking in.

The kid was a high risk pick. Didn't pan out. I will say that it's a good thing they didn't have all these drug tests back in the 70s..

The Steelers have known about this since before the combine and he's still on the roster. To me that makes me lean towards believing that there are deeper issues at hand. It is easy to judge someone till you've had to walk a mile in their shoes. It may just be the kids just a stoner in which case that's a sad waste of talent given the consequences or it could be something a lot more deeper and troubling. The fact the Steelers haven't cut the guy lead me to believe the second at this point in time. Either way wish the kid luck in sorting out whatever issues he has and hopefully he can over come them and get on with whatever makes him happy in life.

Exactly...

That is why the drafted Coates last year, much to our surprise, and then sign the TE out of SD last week...

Green can provide that height/speed mix in number 10's absence..Don't be surprise to see a Steeler TE line up on the outside this season...

Right now the Steelers are is family. Would suck if they would just turn their back on him. I wouldn't do it to my kid, close friend, or close co-worker. That's is just me. Everyone makes mistakes. If he loses his right to play football who cares. You still stand by him. A very close co-worker's daughter was doing heroin for over a year while living with her boyfriend. He always knew their was something wrong. He feared the worst. Finally he sat her down with his exwife and they told her that they are here for her. In the end she is 2 years clean. A daily fight though. She will be the first to tell you. And depression is part of that struggle but with family and friends she is doing good.

This reeks of using "depression", which is a real and significant problem for millions of people, as an excuse and legal shenanigans to get out of bad behavior and poor choices.

It's why no one takes these athletes (or anyone with money/power) seriously when they hide behind their lawyers and agents and try to make excuses that NONE of us could possibly get away with.

He knew the rules. He didn't follow the rules. Now he pays the consequences.

It's what all of us teach our kids every day, yet Bryant obviously thinks he's above it because he's "important" and has money.

**** him. He sits for his season.

Next year, when he's eligible and he has followed whatever rules and protocol the NFL demands, he'll be welcome back at his $690,000 contract.

In fact, I'm not sure a full season under suspension counts towards an accrued season in the NFL, so instead of becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2018 he might end up being a restricted free agent. That could be a cheap season when he is in his prime at age 26.

After that, in all likelihood, with this suspension now on his record, we probably cut bait instead of paying him any substantial money.

I totally disagree. Yes they are trying to shorten the suspension but his agent clearly said that will take what punishment they are handed. It will be a year. They know that. I really just think his agent wanted the public to know that MB is clean and that he is struggling with depression.

Del- a season spent suspended certainly shouldn't count as an accrued season, pretty sure it's not. Should be two more years on the cheap if he stays clean and we choose to keep him around.

His salary will no count this year. Only his bonus 100k. And it will not count as an occurred year as you have to be active for any weeks. So Bryant will be under contract till 2019

Dog, you apparently have real issues caused by real experiences. Obviously, Bryant never served in combat, but that still doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't suffer from depression. But I question it. But by all indications, he does suffer from not being very bright.

Pots meet kettle....I have seen depression take over people's lives. "Smarts" really don't have a say in it. It takes years some times to get the right meds to control it...that is if you find the right meds. Depression isn't a cold or flu that you just get over. It is a life long struggle for some.

2016 where's there's always an excuse why people **** up

It's not so much that weed is a bad drug. It's not. These guys have rules to abide by and as an adult you should understand the consequences of breaking such rules. The guy is in a position to succeed. If he's depressed as a pro athlete he has the time/resources to get help now in the off season. Same thing with Ray Rice. The guy ****** up. Society as a whole has an excuse and will coddle someone over anything now. Martavis needs help, yes! But dont put that individual drama onto the rest of the team

It has been said Robin Williams and I are much in the same when it comes to our manic.

Mental Health especially addiction and depression as well as Bipolar Disorder all go hand in hand. It's easy to criticize Bryant for his selfish behavior. Anyone who has been with a family member, someone close or even someone who has been down the road this kid is going understands that this isn't an easy battle. He'll never get to where he needs to be until he hits 'rock bottom'. Losing his playing time this season could quite possibly be it for him. It is possible (and I don't know his background) that he is from the hood and this is the only lifestyle he knows. With all my joking aside, I hope he can get his life in order. Not just for the Steelers but more for himself. I wish the young man well with the hope that he can get his life in order.

And what makes you KNOW he suffers from it?

There is NOTHING more common than this type of person to lie his way and trying to turn his love for weed to being a victim. But because his agent says so, you assume it is true?

Hey, maybe Bell and Blunt suffered from depression too. Didn't you consider that?
