Bryant skips drug test; facing full season suspension

Reserve/Suspended- This listing is for players who have been suspended by the NFL. Players on the suspended list are not paid for their time suspended, do not count against the active 53, and their salaries are reduced to reflect the weeks they are suspended. For example Justin Blackmon of the Jaguars will see his base salary drop from 17 games of pay to just 13 games of pay. Players can also have their signing bonuses reduced due to forfeiture provisions in the CBA. In the case of drug suspension this is mandatory. In other cases teams will determine if they will go after bonus money. I am unsure if this forfeiture is accrued during of after the season, but will try to clarify at a later date. While suspended the cap charges count in full.
From over the cap
Ok lets go on the assumption for a moment that he comes to work on time, is a good person and is liked by his team mates. WTF is it costing you to keep him on the roster for a year that doesn't count against your cap. Furthermore, it doesn't count towards accrument towards FA. So you will have a guy next season who is 25,26. Now you can say he is a distraction, but what is his distraction. He won't have anything to do with the team whatsoever. Show some compassion ,help him financially to try and get him proper treatment. If you don't like what you are hearing in terms of his progress, You can literally cut him at any point. I see his position as unreliable and difficult to plan on, but if you think of hjm as the 5th receiver, who cares. Those guys are a dime a dozen.

According to SD, his contract "tolls"

So what about Bryant’s 2016 salary and prorated signing bonus? The Steelers should get full credit for both of those as well and according to Joel Corry of CBS Sports, “teams are required under the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) to recoup signing bonuses for PED and substance-abuse suspensions.” In Bryant’s case, the Steelers should get full credit for not only his $600,00 base salary, but his $109,805 prorated bonus salary cap charge as well.

UPDATE: I reached out to Corry on Twitter to ask about Bryant’s proration amount in 2016 and here’s what he told me: “Contract would toll. Only bonus proration would count.” In other words, Bryant would have a cap charge in 2016 of $109,805. Corry went on to tell me that the Arizona Cardinals only had cap charge for Daryl Washington’s bonus proration for the entire seasons he recently missed.

The Steelers probably had a good idea Bryant was facing a suspension as evidenced by them re-signing veteran wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey to a three-year contract just prior to the start of the new league year. Additionally, the signing of unrestricted free agent tight end Ladarius Green now looks like an extremely wise move.

I bet they are paying more than 100k in ghost money for the ****** kicker that cost them a game last year and they had for 4-6 weeks on the roster.

Draft WR #1, it's the only way.

Coates hasn't shown ****. and there's nobody worth squat in FA

So are we still in favor of trading Wheaton for a draft pick??????????

This kid was probably the most freakishly athletic receiver to wear our uniform....a combination of size, speed and athleticism. Hands were suspect but his TD:catches ratio was off the ****** charts. Like every 6th catch was a TD. Where else do you find talent like that ? It comes around once every decade.

Get the help ya need son.....footballs a sport for our entertainment, but you have bigger issues than the game. Get life in order...you've lost the game, Don't **** up your life.

Agreed. Probably the freakiest athlete in the league. Damn shame if this all falls through...for everybody.

Bryant was dropping seemingly every other pass that came his way last season, I think we'll miss him a lot less than most anticipate. Frankly, I had grown tired of him before the season was even over, this news just means I won't have to watch him drop pass after pass this season too.

Coates played very well in the very little time he was given, all he has to do is catch the ball consistently and its already an upgrade.

Coates hasn't shown ****.

The crowded roster didn't leave much room for him to see the field. He showed up for the few seconds he did get on the field, in a playoff no less. The bright lights didn't seem to bother him like Sweed.

Sammie Coates is a specimen. He'll be a beast once he gets his wheels. He reminds me of a cross between Bolden and Bryant. And who did the NFL profile writers compare him to? NFL Comparison: Martavis Bryant

Frankly I think they took him last year with this situation in mind. Sammie will be fine. We'll be fine.

You guys aren't sensing spikes sarcasm in your radars

I thought Coats showed quite a bit against a strong Broncos secondary in the playoffs. I think the Steelers will be fine at WR, between him, Brown and Wheaten.

Seriously, **** Bryant. The kid obviously cares more about weed than a promising career in the NFL.

That is what they do back in the lab.

How immature can you get??? Had these problems in college and still cant come to grips with this??? Any dope worth a year of nfl pay must be some awesome **** or you are one dumb selfish *******.... We all know which it is... frustrating for all n the steeler org as well as the fans...damn

I myself deal with depression issues and ptsd and things from two wars. It does control my life sometimes and I do lock out the world. So if he is dealing with these things I understand, I also smoked weed when I was young and in school so I understand what the kid is going through. I wish him the best and hope he gets his meds straight. It's taken me a long road to get mine straight and I still can't return to work. God bless ya kid.

The Steelers have known about this since before the combine and he's still on the roster. To me that makes me lean towards believing that there are deeper issues at hand. It is easy to judge someone till you've had to walk a mile in their shoes. It may just be the kids just a stoner in which case that's a sad waste of talent given the consequences or it could be something a lot more deeper and troubling. The fact the Steelers haven't cut the guy lead me to believe the second at this point in time. Either way wish the kid luck in sorting out whatever issues he has and hopefully he can over come them and get on with whatever makes him happy in life.

If you cut him, you can't recoup any money from him.
