Browns trading Justin Gilbert to Steelers!

worth the gamble even if he is as bad/lazy/uncoachable as cleveland is saying. i remember wanting him in that draft.

Yeah, I feel like when you play for a loser it would be hard to press yourself every day. Obviously the expectations aren't high there.

On a side note his whole contract is now guaranteed. If released were still on the hook for 2.4 mil next season.

For whatever it's worth....

Browns notebook: Cornerback Justin Gilbert says maturity is his greatest area of improvement
http://www.ohio.com/sports/browns/b...-is-his-greatest-area-of-improvement-1.704735

Browns cornerback Justin Gilbert explained he feels as if he’s a different player this year.

“Most definitely, yeah,” Gilbert said Sunday after the 12th practice of training camp. “I’m not going to elaborate on it too much, but yeah.”

Where has he improved the most?

“Mature,” Gilbert replied.

The eighth overall pick in the 2014 draft, Gilbert has been a colossal disappointment in his first two NFL seasons partly because of maturity issues and an undisclosed personal problem that plagued him as a rookie.

The Browns effectively suspended him for the 2014 regular-season finale after he showed up late to a team meeting the previous day. Then two days before the 2015 regular-season opener, Gilbert was involved in what Brunswick police described as a road rage incident.

Gilbert, though, has supposedly been on his best behavior so far under the new coaches.

“Justin Gilbert has done everything we’ve asked,” defensive coordinator Ray Horton said recently. “We came in — I came in — and we talked about having a clean slate. I remember Justin in college [at Oklahoma State University], coming out, what kind of player he was. I said, ‘I want you to be that type of player.’ He’s done everything we’ve asked, and I’m very happy with him.”

Gilbert added, “That’s what I’m supposed to do. So I feel like whatever they ask me to do, that’s my job to do it. That’s what they pay me to do.”

The franchise also pays him to make plays, and that’s still a work in progress.

Two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden, who’s coming off March 16 ankle surgery, participated in team drills Sunday for the first time since camp opened July 29. But coach Hue Jackson ruled out Haden for the Browns’ preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday at FirstEnergy Stadium.

So Gilbert is expected to start opposite cornerback Tramon Williams just like he did Friday in the team’s 17-11 preseason-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers. Gilbert had also practiced with the No. 1 defense in Haden’s absence.

The Browns want Gilbert to benefit from the experience.

“Most of the time when you watch the film, he’s only a step away here or there, and he’s not in bad position,” Williams said recently. “So I think he’s progressing as a player. He’s really growing from a mental standpoint.

“He needed to grow mentally for sure. That’s the toughest part of the game. Physically, we all can do it. It’s who can do it mentally. Who can stay in the game mentally enough to come out and be able to make a career out of it ’cause a lot of guys can’t do it.”

Whether Gilbert can ever turn his career around remains to be seen, but the new coaching staff has granted him a fresh start in hopes of finding out.

“It just feels different when I walk in the building now,” Gilbert said.

I think this sums it up best:

The Browns will receive a 6th round pick in the 2018 draft for Gilbert. That means he was about to be cut by Cleveland. Rather than trying to get him on waivers, Pittsburgh jumps the waiver claim order with a trade.

And that's how we should view this acquisition. Nobody is expecting Gilbert to come in and get PT from the get go. He'll start at the bottom of the depth chart, and have a chance to work his way up. If he doesn't change his attitide and approach he'll be shown the door in no time. But the small chance that he can turn it around is well worth the price we paid to get him.

My phone is BLOWING UP from folks in Cleveland. Cliffs Notes? Steelers are smoking something if they think they can fix Gilbert #ouch

I would tell Cleveland fans not to underestimate what being rescued from a festering **** hole can do for a player.

Yeah cause the Steelers secondary coaches have been great at coaching up players. LOL

Well if Gilbert produces like D.H.B. I am fine with that.

That is the wrong way to look at his. As far as I am concerned he is a 6th Round prospect not a first round bust.

Whew. We can all sleep better, knowing how you think we should look at this. Thank God. Without you telling us, we would all be worried about it.

Are you this much of an ******* in real life, or just on the internets?

This could also be a sign they aren't feeling all that great about the Burns pick right now. If he was lighting it up, do they make this trade?

The collective IQ level around here drops significantly every time you post. Please stop and spare us a few brain cells.

With the golson injury? Of course. They are forced to move gay to the slot and that leaves a rookie as a starter. Smart move with a very small cost. It reminds me of the DHB pick up

But getting first round draft pick money. But I get it....classic ....wasn't used properly.

It's nice having someone besides YOU telling us how to think............ Dry Ice

PS. I'm very happy with this trade. LOW risk and great reward potential. Give the TIRES a hard spin and see where they take us. A 6th round pick to us,.....WOW and addressing a need. Remember there isn't a hell of a lot out there for a 6th round pick, UNLESS your picking up t*mmy b*y..............wouldn't want him .

Or the Steelers decided to take a chance on a player they had rated higher on their board then Shazier. Then instead of hoping they were able to get him thru waivers decided to ensure they get their man by trading a low draft choice from 2018. Burns may not have anything to do with it. Gay isn't going to play forever. Burns Gilbert Cockrell Golson Davis Golden Dangerfield and Mitchell is a very young secondary who could potentially grow together. Provided Gilbert Burns Golson and Davis pan out

Ah yes, the resident liberal speaks.

TIbs and I might be very opposite in that other forum but he typically has a decent opinion and grasp of reality when it comes to football. Leave your opinion of someones Politics in the political forum where it belongs. We can disagree on politics but still be friends and fellow Steeler fans.

This trade makes a lot of sense. As others have stated, very low risk with potential of high reward. The talent is there and just doesn't disappear over night. The trick for Tomlin, Lake and Butler will be to bring it out of the young man. Attitude wise! This ain't the Browns man! With guys like Harrison, Heyward, AB and Ben, they'll cool his *** down real quick if that starts. Not concerned one bit and think the change will be positive for this kid.

I didn't want Gilbert in the draft. Didn't think he would be worth 1st round pick. I wanted Dennard. I think one of the knocks on Gilbert was that he lacked physicality.

For a 6th, 2 years from now? Easy decision. If he sucks, you've lost almost nothing.
