Best Steeler OL ever

Max Starks, although he is NOT my pick by any means, I think he was Franchise-tagged twice.

Dawson was sweet music, did more things right than any other center….. bar none.

There are a lot of greats over the years, but then again it’s the STEELERS and they don’t fall short on great players or plays.

Salute the nation

Max met my kid at training camp 1 year and remembered her 3 years in a row after. Pretty cool

Best Olinemen in Steelers history, or the best OL(unit) in Steelers history?

Dawson changed the way the Center position was played I believe, he was one of the first if not the first Center that could really get out and move.
Faneca is right there, great run blocker and pass blocker, in the discussion as the best OG in NFL history.

He wasn't nearly the best, but a guy I always got a kick out of was Duval Love, and Cowher yelling at him for something. "Duval!!!" You'd see it when they mic'd up Cowher, but I remember one time hearing through the TV during a game. You heard Cowher yelling "Duvall!!!" I think he had a holding penalty or something. That was impressive on Cowher's part.

Apparently Duval has lost his mind a little. There are videos of him on Youtube berating neighbors.

You’re the only one that answered the actual question posted in the thread title.
Even Coolie didn’t answer his own question correctly.
You would think that a highly intelligent and respected moderator would be clear on the thread topic title.

The question was the “best Steelers offensive line ever”…not the best offensive lineman.

I like the line that Dermotti Dawson played on which included Alan Faneca and Duval Love ..if I didn’t get my eras mixed up. Don’t remember the others.
Goes to show you how the O line is the least remembered and least appreciated.
It can be interpreted two ways…

I answered regarding the offensive line as a unit. @CoolieMan answered, IMO, from the best offensive lineman.

Both abbreviations are still - OL

Jon Kolb. Simply a superb LT. Great run blocker, incredibly strong, superb pass blocker. Also has longevity going for him since he played 177 games, including 138 starts.

Pouncey is barely top 5 OL in Steeler history. He is only the 3rd best C in team history.

Webby was one of the best “old” school C’s to ever play up to that time

Dirt in my opinion is the greatest to EVER play the position, and he would have still dominated in the modern era, maybe even more.

Pouncey was a very very good C and there is no shame being ranked behind Dirt and Webby. Exactly like being the 3rd CB behind Blount and Woodson.

I’d put Pouncey behind Hartings, too. Most overrated Steeler by a mile, routinely got bullied by great NTs.

Yeah, I was being generous with saying Pouncey was the 3rd best C. After some more thoughtI would have to say this is MY list

1. Dawson - I know some think Webster, but while Webby was great, Dirt just changed how the position was played.
2. Webster - Tough as nails and everything you want in a player.
3. Mansfield - Everyone agrees that Joe Green was a huge reason for the Steelers elevation to excellence in the 70’s, but Mansfield was a big part of it too.
4. Pouncey - One of the better “modern” era C’s who took it as a personal responsibility to protect his QB. If not for unfortunate injuries he very well would have been #3 or challenge for #2.
5. Hartings - Rock solid player no matter where he lined up. Some will say he should be #4 but I’m not sure that is true.

My hope is that Frazier carries the torch as the next great C for the Steelers and I will have to reconsider my top 5 in a number of years.

ok in one of my drunken rambling threads a brilliant poster asked me who the best ever Steeler OL...

so what are your thoughts?

Our O-Lines have basically been basic...Nothing to get crazy about...If Webster is our best we have alot of work to do as a Franchise...Cause AFTER him there ain't nothing....NOTHING....

IF WE'D OF ONLY DRAFTED CREED HUMPHREY HUH DRINK IRON?

Colbert sucked

Creed Humphrey would have been a better pick than either if the RB or TE taken. At about the midway point of the season, Creed graded out as the best Center in the league, I don’t know where he ended up for the season as he is not a Steelers player so I don’t follow him.

My point being that at the time of the draft and to this current day, Creed would have been the better direction.

Tomlin & Co. had ignored the OL for a very long time. It can be argued that Ben played behind 2 separate OL that were arguably the worst (bottom 8) in the NFL at the time.

Again, Creed would have been night and day better than the kid they put at center in his place.

Also one last thing, Creed has been to every pro-bowl so far.

I would say LT Kolb RG Faneca(HOF) C Webster or Dawson (both HOF) LG Faneca(HOF) cheating a bit. RT Max starks.

hopefully this changes to Jones Frazier and Fautanu
