Berry vs Wile. Do we have a punting battle?

Berry had 3 bad punts in the first two games.

He had 3 punts in the first game. one for 59, one for 42 (from the 45, so short was good) and one for 24

In the GB game he also had punts of 58, 65 and 56 yards along with the two terrible shanks.Seems like the leg is there.

TN first punt only goes for 35yards. But it was from the 43, so downed at the 8. Makes his average look bad, but was a good punt. Second punt 52 yards.
That game, Wile punts from the Pit 16 (58 yards), the Pit 43 (41 yards) and the Pit 36 (47 yards). Not one punt on the TN side of the field.

Last night, Berry punts once from the 50. 36 yards. Could have been better, but puts Carolina inside the 20, so doesn't suck.
Wile punts from the pit 15 (50 yards) and from the Pit 25 (46 yards)

Wile has one kick from inside the opponents territory. PHI 48 yard line.

Berry may have some warts, but, when you have to punt inside the opponent's territory, he can keep it out of the endzone. We do not know if Wile can do that or not. Obviously, Berry can boot some nice ones, too,

As far as the run backs that mess up Berry's net, were those bigger ones due to poor hang-time or just ****** tackling? If his hang-time was poor, but there was a tackler right there, seems like hang-time is irrelevant.

Berry is inconsistent.

Wile had the same amount of punts inside the 20 with less overall attempts. Clearly Wile's leg and hang time are better. Wile is also a fine emergency kicker. I saw no difference at all as a holder for placekicks.

I don't disagree that Berry is inconsistent. # punts inside the 20 is impressive when you are always kicking from your side of the field. However, what I am trying to show you is that in every case, except 1, Wile was punting from waaay away. Easy to get long yardage and hang-time when you don't have to worry, at all, about kicking it out of the endzone.

We know zero, or close to it, about how Wile will do when punting from just outside of FG range. Can he control those punts to drop them short of the goal line or is he just a huge leg that can bust long punts?

whenever someone posts a contradiction to what Coach believes to be true, despite the facts...

The only way Berry loses his job is if the Steelers need the cap room for something.

50% of his punts went inside the 20-yard line.

If you asking can he get them inside the 20 punting at say the opponents 42-yard line ( which would be a 57+ yard field goal ) that remains to be seen.

But if we go on what we have seen Wile has the better leg and the better hang time on punts that have no chance of being touchbacks. He has also been more consistent and has bonus ability at being able to kick field goals is something happened to Boswell during a game.

By 4:00PM today, it could very well be bye-bye Berry

Plus....if Wile is kept over Berry, we will have hear about coach and his awesome prediction regarding......a kicker. Yet if Wile is cut....then it’s bash the Tomlin/Colbert cant coach/ GM rhetoric. Either way, Coach thinks he’s smarter than everyone else.

Its, mostly, trying to explain to coach, again, that a stat doesn't mean what he thinks it means. Although, i dont know why i bother.

You don't need to look at stats to know Berry isn't very good.

that have no chance of being touchbacks

This is pure speculation. Your "proof" isnt what you think it is.

50% within the 20 from where he was kicking them isn't spectacular. Just a big leg. Nice to have, but does not define the skill set a punter needs.

If he can kick, too, then you are right, that is quite a bit of value. If it is FG and not just xp. When they went to kicks the other night, i tuned out. When i was reading through the scoring, it said Wile kick and i thought it was a typo.

Shouldn't you be here pointing how how much better, based on your stat, the punter you wanted to draft in the 5th is than Berry? Or do you not want to note that, based on your stat, our undrafted guy is doing the same or better?

I don't care if they keep Wile over Berry. If our O cant get past the 50, Wile will be a big benefit. Of course, if our O is consistently stifled inside their own territory, punter will be the least of our problems.

Oh snap, they kept Berry! Now get to point out how often he sucks. But most here already know that.

It doesn't matter. You were wrong. DEAD wrong. And I was right. DEAD right!!!!!

We are going to have to cut coach's third arm off now, oh well back to the drawing board for him.

like you're doing harping about Joshua Frazier being cut?

Double Yoi! Wile was picked up by the Vikings. We can compare season years afterwards and I'm on record that Dickson who I would have taken in round five is going to be better than Berry.

I wasn't predicting who the Steelers would keep, moreover who I thought was better. But you were DEAD right. I just don't want to see any dead punts.

And I am on record as to saying the Steelers made the right choice by solidifying depth at a position of weakness.

As far as dead punts, I think that is what your post delivered.

hi

Based on you stat, you wanted to use a 5th round pick on a guy who was no better in preseason than Wile, a udfa.
