Benton Signs Extension

Weird situation with Porter. He was the 32nd pick of the draft, which is usually a 1st round pick. Because Miami lost their number 1 pick that year, Porter ended up being the 1st pick of the 2nd round. If he was a 1st rounder, the Steelers could exercise the 5th year option and kick the can down the road.

IMHO
trade 88…he is over rated, overpaid, and don’t need him with Wahington, Tonyan, and Rookie Riley Ski..
Use the savings towards a Porter deal..

If Porter was a first rounder, the Steelers couldn't have exercised the fifth year options, as Porter wouldn't be a Steeler. If Miami hadn't lost their pick the Steelers would still have had the first pick of the second round - it would have been 33 instead of 32.

The price will only go up by waiting. There are still some stud CBs who need deals. Is it possible the Steelers just don't want to pay a CB that type of money?

I don’t think it is anything but a difficult negotiation based on value of play and position. For me it was never going to be done quickly. His agent knew how many top CBs were going to get paid and paid handsomely. I think the perimeters are there now. Now it is just going through the process. Opposed to earlier the agent was pausing and thinking let us see how this unfolds…

Yes..i hear ya..
But my point was it was strange/ unusual that the pick was 32 overall.. which normally means a first ..and would allow for the 5th year option on the rookie contract…

Trade 88… get a pick next year and free up some capital to compensate Junior..

Just saw he is the highest paid DL in team history. Cam is going to be pissed. I wonder if he'll threaten to hold out for more money. :ROFLMAO:
Well Cam would have a case to.....after all....it isn't like Benton won the Man of the year award like Cam has.

Liked but dislike

So, you’re saying you go both ways…………. Coolie was right…….

I'm a bit on the fence on this one. I guess they realize they have their future NTs on the cheap with Yaya and Rubio, while their stalwart Heyward is soon to retire and they need to have more than a 2nd year player in Harmon (again on the cheap for a while) to guarantee success in the trenches for the future.

So with so much depth with minimum cap % they can afford a medium investment in a proven starter that will guarantee QB pressure while the other DLs specialize in stopping the run .

If the Steelers manage to secure JPJ then there's nothing wrong with this contract, which also we have to wait and see how is it structured but I can bet the last year is practically a cap free one if cut, that's Kahn MO and I really like it.

So many on here think if we would have signed him right away it would have saved money. It takes 2 to tango. JR’s agent played it perfectly so far. Joey would have been nuts to sign right away. Knowing all these top guys around the league were signing as well. If Joey has the same year as last, on the open market someone would pay 30+ million easily.
We’ve all waited for a top 5 CB for as long as I can remember. This is the reality.

By the time we sign a young franchise QB to a second contract it might be 100 million a year. 😔

Another way to look at it from a competitive standpoint......if they just sucked it up and paid him 28 to 30 right away the other playoff team would have been forced to sign for even more.......sometimes being first is best

My whole point was…… what if he didn’t want to sign right away? He was right to wait.

If the right money was offered....he would have signed. At least we got our back up Olber signed... along with our back up TE also. Now throw in our backup DT. Our starting CB being signed long term is over rated.

All 3 good signings.
These guys are the future of our team. Why let them go?
JpJ will get his also

I think the jury is still out on Khan big time, but I’m sure Tomlin had a massive say in who was pursued and prioritized in roster building and tied Khan’s hands to a significant degree.

I’d be interested to know how much more say and authority Khan has now in the new post Tomlin era
I can't imagine a coach like MM allowing the GM to make unilateral decisions. That just doesn't sit right.

A young rookie head coach? Probably. Maybe. A guy like MM? I just can't see it.

I’m sure Porter’s agent realizes this as well.

They’ve stalled this long (porter’s side), but should be close enough to start / continue actual real negotiations, considering the time line and TC nearing an end.
