Kovacevic: Why Ben was right to flip out - https://www.dkpittsburghsports.com/2017/09/10/kovacevic-ben-absolutely-right-flip/

CLEVELAND — As Ben Roethlisberger strode toward the sideline late in the first half Sunday, he undoubtedly spoke for the sum total of Steelers Nation upon barking a series of expletives toward Mike Tomlin.

Then Todd Haley.

Then pretty much anyone within earshot, because that’s precisely the scope of the fire that burns within this particular franchise quarterback.

And then, once his helmet had been peeled off and he watched yet another Jordan Berry punt, enough heat had been released that a cooler head began to prevail. Landry Jones, his trusted confidante as much as his backup, made the first approach, soon followed by Haley and Antonio Brown. Those four formed an impromptu huddle on one of the long benches, and they began to discuss all that was going so miserably wrong for the offense.

Yep read this yesterday

put Haley in the press box and give the reigns to Ben. He can gauge the ebb and flow of the game by now. Some of those runs were too freakin' predicable.

What I saw was a Cleveland team that was daring us to throw downfield and here we are running WR bubble screens when if we had plays going out 5-15 yards there were plays available. That also meant there was no where for Bell to run. Once we started getting some passing going downfield Bell was able to get a few runs, but that wasn't until very late. Frustrating game for us when we should have won handily. They've got their work cut out for them going into next week against a better team.

It drives me insane that Tomlin/Hayley does not make in-game adjustments and TAKE WHAT THEY GIVE YOU. **** the WR screen. I hate that play. It is going to get intercepted for a pick 6 sooner or later. Everyone knows that we love that ****.

What I'd like to see happen.
1). No more empty backfields
2). Mix in some screens to LeVeon.
3). More play action passes
4). More crossing routes. Those are hard to defend. GB & *NE do them well.
5). Ditch the WR screen.
6). Send both AB & Martivis deep and pick them apart with Eli and James over the middle.

I don't want to turn this into an Anti-Tomlin thread because I think he is a top 5 coach, but this goes back before Haley was here, we did this with Arians as well. It's Tomlin ultra conservative road offense. Ben tried telling Tomlin at Baltimore last year to open the offense up in the 3rd, we didn't until the 4th when we proceeded to throw for nearly 200 yards and a couple TDs. Tomlin answer when asked, was "well Baltimores offense wasn't doing much either so I felt we could afford to be patient"
Again this isn't a fire Tomlin rant, etc, but this is more of a Tomlin thing than Haley.

saying that, give Ben the keys to drive the Mercedes. Let him take it on the highway and open it up.

Anyone have the full transcript of that article? I hate that DK Sports site. It never works. Can't log in with Facebook, Amazon, my regular address, nothing.

Any middle of the road pop warner coach would have beaten the Browns by a larger margin than Tomlin and company did yesterday. It was the same old story on the road against a bad team, playing down to them. They should have cleaned house after the New England debacle last year. **** the Rooney rule and the politics that go with it.

The Rooney rule is what you pull out from all this. Really? And I honestly am disappointed with Tomlin with aspects of his coaching....but race NEVER even entered my mind. Sad really.

The Steelers offense is doomed
I heard this more than anything else after the Week 1 game, but some fans just refused to look at the facts. These aren’t excuses, they are facts.

Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown played two series together this preseason.
The offensive line had all 5 starters together for about one quarter this preseason.
Le’Veon Bell voluntarily sat out the preseason,

Of course this had nothing to do with it. Its a double edge sword. You dont want injuries but you risk a slow start..

My take:

The offense will look better next game. It hurt that Bell missed so much time and seemingly didn't know what page the rest of the offense was on. It hurt that Bryant had butter fingers. And it hurt that it took them most of the game because they let Ben, the man who sees the field better then any of the coaches, and just him run the offense.

2 minute offense works much better then any of Haleys scripted napkin plays.

Yeah, a total **** the bed game. A 3 point win over Cleveland is a 10 point loss vs almost any other team.

I get doing a bubble screen if the defense is playing off ten yards to prevent you from getting over top. Yes, throw the bubble or quick out and take your 5 yards. Maybe you get lucky on a missed tackle and your receiver goes 25+ yards. Yes, it's ok to take what they give you. But when they are planning at the LOS you trust your receivers can get clean of the LOS and make the safety choose where they want to track or move them with your eyes or a pump and take your shots down field.

I am also fine with moving Bell out of the backfield and into a slot or out in coverage and try to get a LB matched up on him. Again, if you see something take advantage of it.

But I think Haley scripts his plays x amount of plays and he likes to do safe plays off the bat. I remember Holmgren did that also but he would throw a lot of different things at the defense so gauge how they reacted to each and then adjust his play calling from that. Haley seems to just wants to play it safe to not turn the ball over. Gotta trust your offense and your Pro Bowl QB, RB, and WR sometimes.

Ben was off his game. He over threw a lot of open guys and even though the passed weren't going to get us first downs it would have helped field position wise.

Bryant flat out looked awful. JuJu played like a rookie. Bell needs to kick the rust off. The offensive line looked offensive.

Our defense looked good up front but our secondary worries me. Haden was beat a few times and luckily the rookie QB missed. Safeties seem to leave the middle pretty open. Gay played too much where was Hilton?

those are my thoughts...

I tell those with objecting reasoning that Haley and Tomlin are not what we need. We were only 3 points better than a bad Browns team, and if not for the blocked punt TD score, who knows

Glad to see Ben giving it to them. He has earned his stripes, their success is because of him, not the other way around.

So if we consider all those things what is the bitching about?? We won. AND we got even better news today Tuitt isnt hurt significantly.

But he was off too. If you are really objective you would see that too. If you were really objective you would see the lack of playing time in preseason and for some real game action in years contributed to the offense looking sluggish. While also acknowledging that not playing guys in the pre season is to keep them from being injured in meaningless games. So pick your poison.

I see Bryant being rusty based on his decision to smoke dope, and Bell being very silly ( nailing cheerleaders when his fiancee is pregnant and working on the hobby ) holding out when he knew what he would be signing for.

How did Bell and Bryant do in a game that could have padded their stats and helped they get a bigger contract? Pretty crappy,

These are Browns, a 5th pre-season game for us, and historical we beat them silly. punt game was too close to call with special teams blocked put providing the difference.

It will never happen, but one day I'd like to interview either Tomlin or Haley after a game, just to see how they answer questions.

It's softball city for the most part in Pittsburgh.
