I'm getting the feeling that we will resign Heyward and let Beachum test FA. If he leaves you could see Gilbert back at LT and maybe Adams is resigned to play RT. We will lock up DeCastro after this year as well.
Since the arrival of a real offensive line coach I suspect all of these guys will have improved a lot. Alejandro has also made a big jump in size and skill since he was signed last year and could also compete for the LT spot. He is easily the biggest and most athletic of all of the possibles at the position. Beachum has too much too offer the team being able to do a decent job at any position on the line from tackle to center. If he looses his starting spot and does not beat someone for another spot he will easily be the best back up on the team, I expect him to be kept. I also suspect he might be a reasonable priced signing because he does not seem to be me first type of guy and seems to like where he is. Of all the guys on the team I think Beachum is a lock as at least a back up and will dress for every game he is healthy.
Guys that might be nearing the end of time here could be Adams, Foster, Wallace and any other vets they have depending on how the new kids look, if the new kids hit the practice squad they might be something next season and that might be the time the heave hoe hits.
After we resign Heyward there won't be money left to sign Beach to the market rate. Gilbert can play LT and did ok the one year he did it. I think Munch could get him to play it better. Adams can play RT, so after the season he will be cheap and we cam re-sign him. I'm just saying...this is how it will probably play out. You can't sign everyone.
They may find ways to sign a few more guys particularly if they can move some money to next year as the 8 million of dead woodley money goes away this year.
Other than Pouncey Beachum may be the best o-lineman and has probably improved the most over the last 2 yrs. Kind of funny you would think a guy who has never played a game at LT at any level could beat him out.
He played left tackle on a team that did not have anyone else that could play left tackle and was picked to be a guard and utility backup. Gilbert failed and so did Adams at left Tackle and they were tried before Beachum. If Beachum went down at left tackle the next guy to go out there was Pouncey at one point in the season. He was in competition with no one. The prospect is 6 foot 9 inches tall 348 pounds and used to play tight end. He has been through some very tough training in the military that stresses agility. The guy has lots of potential and has been coached by Munch for a bit now and just might be able to do that very thing. Tunch and Wolfley are very high on this kids chances as well and they likely have some understanding of the position.
Honestly, Beachum may have more overall value to the team than Heyward, given the relative importance of their respective positions.
Gilbert was such a disaster at LT a few years ago, he lost the job to Adams within a week of training camp.
I like Heyward, but protecting Roethlisberger in his last few prime years needs to take precedence.
Gilbert was not a disaster. He was at LT in his second year and without Munchack coaching.
maybe you are correct. I have a different memory. Maybe im wrong but I don't remember Gilbert EVER playing Left tackle.
IIRC Gilbert played LT at the start of his sophomore season and held his own until injury sidelined him . Then on his 3rd season he stank it up and lost the starter job at LT, but he was 1st LT on the depth chart during preseason
Beechum, could be our new MAX STARKS................ Foster currently is the weak liok. How he has made it this far, isn't because of his skill level but more of talent leval behind him (big behind lol)
Salute the nation
Wasn't Foster a UDFA? He has done well for himself. Probably the weakest link on our line but serviceable.
