Beachum, Adams, Gilbert

I think Heyward is top priority but I'd gather Beachum is second priority. DeCastro is a guard only but Beachum can play LT so I bet he'd be a fine guard also. It all depends on the price tag. If Beachum wants to break the bank I'd transition tag him and see what the market offered him. So either we'd be able to match, extend him, or keep him one year while a draft pick developed.

Beachum to me doesn't come off as a player who will demand top dollar. I could be wrong but his quiet demanor to me seems like a player who would want to stay in Pittsburgh, for a fair price. But nothing that will break the Steelers wallet. Just doesn't seem like the type to me to be a give me this or I am leaving type.

I think both Beachum and Heyward are resigned this summer. Really cannot do without either one.

He may not be a guy who will walk in and say "gimme $9m", but if we offer $6/$7m and someone else offers $9m, he may says "wtf, why did you lowball me so much?"

I was listening to SNR the other day and one of the guys asked Ed(From the newspaper that shall not be named) who do they sign first.....Heyward or Beachum? His reply was that DeCastro would be signed first. Who knows with this FO anymore.

Agree, I think they find a way to keep Beachum, although since he hasn't played LT all that long there may not be teams throwing an abundance of money at him.
They can't cut Adams soon enough. Any half decent UDFA can replace him. Waste of space.

I keep reading that the only problem with Beachum is that he's a little undersized for LT. He has good technique and quick feet but just not ideal size for some of the monsters he has to wrassle. Out of all our tackles, he's the shortest. I did read that he put on some weight and he can indeed play all the positions, inc C. I guess we'll have to wait and see. . If he holds out for big money, it could be a problem they will have to figger out

77 Gilbert, Marcus ........T 6-6 330
64 Van Dyk, Mitchell T 6-7 299
68 Beachum, Kelvin T/G 6-3 303
76 Adams, Mike ........OT 6-7 323
54 Hatchie, Micah ........OT 6-5 306
78 Villanueva, Alejandro OT 6-9 336
71 Whimpey, Kevin OT 6-5 295

And yes, I'm with you JonBoy...they can't dump Cam Thomas or Mike Adams soon enough to suit me either.

If they have too they can always throw the dreaded tag on him.

I think the Staff or FO has a hard on for Gilbert eventually being a LT, which is a mistake IMO. Miscasting a Willie colon type again.... Its really a lot about pedigree or that's how it seems. Beachum is a steal that worked out and some of the second rounders are fairly average talents, but they seem to get priority. Had we done what we used to do and locked up beachum before he was a starter this wouldn't be as much of a conundrum.

Foster is adequate but Adams and Gilbert need to go. They can be replaced by cheaper players and free up some cap money.

I looked at something that was listing salaries and cap hits and I thought Adams was really cheap. I thought it was posted on here maybe I'm wrong but he is under a million and one of the cheaper guys at his position. Unless you find an upgrade there is not much point in dumping him for cap savings. Now Gilbert is getting paid pretty good money as is Pouncey.

I don't think that would be very hard if they really wanted to.

That is my point Ron it is doubtful that you are going to find cap savings by dumping the guy as his hit is very low. Any upgrade is likely to be more money.

Are you people kidding me, Gilbert at LT??? Seriously? Do you want Ben's career to be over? Gilbert sucks at RT, he's even worse at LT.

Damn.

I missed that one Still. Thats interesting! Geez I would think they could re-sign David after the 2015 season since I think they even have an option year with him. Yes you are correct about this FO and their decision making. I think David definately needs re-signed but why now when you have two other pressing needs. I'd wait until after 2015 on DeCastro.

That is what they were saying also on the show. They then said maybe the FO is figuring to Tag Beachum then.

I most definitely agree that Adams has to go. I wonder what the cost would be to move on from Gilbert? Is it possible that the plan is to keep Beachum at LT and put Villanueva at RT?

.

If Villanueva makes the squad it will be an accomplishment yet take on a starting job down the road.

He played left tackle on a team that did not have anyone else that could play left tackle and was picked to be a guard and utility backup. Gilbert failed and so did Adams at left Tackle and they were tried before Beachum. If Beachum went down at left tackle the next guy to go out there was Pouncey at one point in the season. He was in competition with no one. The prospect is 6 foot 9 inches tall 348 pounds and used to play tight end. He has been through some very tough training in the military that stresses agility. The guy has lots of potential and has been coached by Munch for a bit now and just might be able to do that very thing. Tunch and Wolfley are very high on this kids chances as well and they likely have some understanding of the position.

Beachum was drafted #248. He made the 53 man roster as a rookie, started his 2nd year, and was tagged by some after his 3rd year as a top 10 LT.If he continues to improve he could well be a top 5. Other than AB I can't think of anyone else in at least the last decade who has made that kind of jump. He seems to be smart, athletic and a hard worker. I can't understand why anyone would want to change his position or not re-sign him-especially after how hard we've been looking for a LT. He's only 26, has only started 33 games. To me he is the future.

Heyward this offseason, then DeCastro next offseason. Beachum will command too much $$$ and is the odd man out.

I'm fine with Cal Beachum as our starting LT. I agree, its amazing what the kid has accomplished in such a short time and continues to work hard with Tunch and Munch refining his skills. I really do think they will make every effort to sign him and Heyward this summer. They don't want them both entering F/A after the 2015 season. I suppose because he's not the proto type LT since he's a bit under sized and didn't come out of college highly rated but he's more than made up for it.

He maybe just that and if so it would be great. The knock on him is he doesn't have the specific size desired for the position but might be even better inside where his size is not as limiting. Point is if Alejandro turns out to win the position and gets ahead of Beachum and he is moved to guard we have upgraded two positions. Further there would now be two viable left tackles on the team and few teams have that kind of luxury. I think the last time we had a guard that could play left tackle well it was Alan Faneca. And if Beachum could bring that to the interior we would have a line that was very hard to beat.

The other thing I read last week in The Newspaper Whose Name We Dare Not Speak is that Beachum is a borderline friggen' genius. He didn't just graduate from college, he graduated with a masters degree.

Really? He was with the eagles who released him. We picked him up and converted him to tackle and you think he has a chance to beat out Beachum? In all seriousness why do you think this is a possibility? I'm just curious at this point.
