O'brien mostly did a good job there. The roster was never that good. He kept making the playoffs with **** QBs. Reports were that they were all set to draft Mahomes and the Chiefs traded up ahead of them. Texans GM Rick Smith then panicked and drafted Watson a bit high. Supposedly O'Brien never wanted Watson.
O'Brien and Smith kept butting heads and the owners knew they had to choose to keep Smith or O'Brien. They kept O'Brien who at that point was stuck with Watson. He traded away a 1st rounder to get LT Laremy Tunsil. Steep price but he got a solid LT and their OL improved quite a bit.
O'Brien takes heat for the Hopkins trade but the fact was that Hopkins was going to hold out. He wanted to be highest paid WR. They could not have kept Hopkins and also gave Watson a big contract.
I bet O'Brien wishes that he traded away Watson. That may not have been an option as a move like that would have to be signed off by owners and i'm guessing the owners would not part with their only marketable player. He was stuck with Watson and had to get what he could for Hopkins. People talk about him trading away 1st rounders but remember that he came from the Pats and they routinely trade out of the first round, so his experience is that you don't necessarily need 1st rounders to have good drafts.
Now without Hopkins, Watson is struggling. By the time O'Brien took over as GM, that ship was already sinking and Watson could be the anchor. I think in terms of coaching, O'Brien got the most out of the talent and even got them to overachieve most years.
Texans are now tied to Watson. They absolutely must hire a coach who will install a college style read option offense. Watson has subpar arm strength. He needs that run action to open the field for him. Bienemey will be the hot name no doubt, with what he's doing with Mahomes. But will the Texans wait for the Chiefs to be eliminated from the playoffs? Coaches on teams that go deep in the playoffs often miss out on jobs.
They could go with a hot name college coach. Tom Herman at Texas and Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma would have been hot names but they are cooling off quickly after bad losses. I think Florida coach Dan Mullen could be the guy.
Interesting notion. Could the Texans hire away a PAC 12 couch right now? Maybe Oregon's Mario Cristobal? Pac 12 is only playing a 6 game schedule starting in November and they had a bunch of guys opt out. Maybe you fire O'Brien now because you convinced Cristobal to jump ship.
