Antonio Brown to holdout?

You guys are hilarious. Talking about trading him, calling him selfish, calling him a diva... How about we interject some FACTS. His contract is the 14th highest WR contract in the league. He is in the conversation of BEST WR in the league, and AT THE VERY LEAST top 5.

So lets take a look at the list of WR's making more than AB.

1. Calvin Johnson
2. Dez Bryant (tagged)
3. Demaryius Thomas (tagged)
4. Mike Wallace
5. Vincent Jackson
6. Larry Fitzgerald
7. Jeremy Maclin
8. Brandon Marshall
9. Randal Cobb
10. Jordy Nelson
11. Greg Jennings
12. Victor Cruz
13. Pierre Garcon

Quick, tell me which of these WR's are absolutely without a doubt, better than AB. Brown has outperformed his contract by a HUGE margin. People keep saying he signed a pretty good contract before, but they don't look at the guaranteed numbers, Browns numbers are the LOWEST guaranteed numbers on that list. In fact, of the top 30 WR contracts, Browns 20% guaranteed is the LOWEST of all. Brown is underpaid not just in total contract worth, but guaranteed numbers. Only one player caught more passes than Brown did last year in a single season.

You can look at next years cap figures, and his final three years and think (that's pretty good), but look at the first three years, he only made $3.7m last year (only 4.6, against the cap). I'm with Brown on this one...pay the man!

Conversation DONE. For those that think he hasn't produced MORE THAN and BETTER THAN all of the WR's on this list over the past two years - your totally delusional. But, yeah, trade the BEST WR in the league because he's greedy...

SMDH.

Well there goes the cap just when the Steelers started to get things back in order. Trade him for a #1 pick. Brown gets paid enough, and just because other teams have cap buster deals and over pay their receivers doesn't mean we should. Brown is not underpaid, Wallace and those others are over paid because of the stupidity of their teams. We don't need to emulate them. Put Bryant at #1, Wheaton at #2 and use the extra pick to draft a replacement in the higher rounds. Ben is a big part in making our receivers great and someone else will step up and put up big numbers, Brown just happens to fit well in our system with Ben. When players start to get this way you unload them, you don't pay small system wide receivers megatron money. NE let Welker walk and they survived.

So every time a person produces well doing his job for which he SIGNED a contract to play for at that rate. They should just redo it. That kinda crap is what ***** a team up. The next guy over is going to be going hey what about me?

And exactly how many of them would be performing as the best at their position??? Only Bell and he is in line for a new deal anyway

I don't have a problem with him holding out. I would - no way I come in.

Just a question to you sir...

Are you a salaried employee or on a contract? There's a huge difference between the two. Because contracted workers (no matter what line of work they're in) have to "get the money while they can" because they are just contractors. Salaried employees have it a bit easier and their paychecks are more guaranteed over a longer period of time because their full time employees and they'll probably be in a job/company 10-20 years in a normal scenario.

So, why judge the person that may not work after 12 years in the NFL? There's a lot more that we could complain about as fans. Here's an example - WHY ARE WE PAYING $15 FOR A PINT OF BEER??? $8 FOR A HAMBURGER???

The money end of it is important but not the only thing. The other thing to keep in mind is what can be had in return. Suppose the team gets this years and next years number one picks from a trade partner. I am also not sure how the signing bonus goes if traded, since he is still playing as woodley was when released his signing bonus did not accelerate into his last year but continued to be prorated over the rest of his contract years. I would not rule out any option at this point and would also say the steelers need to send a message regarding hold outs.

If you look at the link I provided, overthecap.com shows you exactly what happens to the cap if he is traded. The remaining portion of his prorated signing bonus (plus the restructured salaries converted to signing bonuses) hits the cap immediately. An immediate cap hit of $9,662,500. Brown is not getting traded. Not for a player. Not for draft picks. Not at all.

The problem is, if AB decides to hold out for a year, not only is he not paid, but he doesn't lose a year off his contract with the steelers. He's back to square 1 in the same situation down a year from his playing career. Contracts favor the team over the player, and this is a big reason why players can't hold teams hostage in the middle of their contracts.

AB would have more clout with 2 years left, and with 1yr left, the steelers would be motivated to resign a productive AB to a larger contract.

AB has no bargaining power at all. He can hold out 6-8 games max so he doesn't lose a year off his eligibility, but seeing AB's work ethic and his love for the game, there is NO WAY he misses a single season game. He would not want to ruin his chance at breaking more records. This is a trojan horse, and AB will be playing this year under his current contract.

The only compromise is taking his 23M owed and rework the contract to paying more now with less salary in the 3rd year (which is moot since he should be getting a new contract before his 3rd year contract is up.

True.

Maybe "sit out the entire year" isn't correct on my part.

I think to accrue the season you have to come back in Week 10 (or 11), something like that.

Same situation. In fact, Brown ruins our season AND gets $2 million.

Emmanuel Sanders was 50th in receiving yards in 2013. He is the 25th highest paid WR.

In 2014 he moved to 5th highest in receiving yards (mostly because he was thrown to 140+ times.) Is he now the 5th BEST WR in the league? Should he get a raise?

That is the situation w AB.

AB was rated the 43rd highest in receiving yards when he signed his contract. At the time, he was making top 10 in avg/yr for a WR.

Right on. He signed a great contract for himself 2 year ago. He jumped at it. He should be grateful to a team that was willing to sign him to that kind of cash. I don't see us caving this year or even next. They will resign him with 1 year remaining, if he gets that far.

Sure Brown is due a raise, and that happens when his current contract ends like other players and no sooner.

Nice quality post filled with insightful facts.

Sometimes you just have to slap people in the face when they are acting like panicky fans (dipshits). It's not possible to build a viable case for trading Antonio Brown except by being a dipshit..."oh no, he's disrespecting the Steelers, no one should disrespect the Steelers by not showing up to lift weights on April 20th even if that player is the hardest working guy on our team and one of the best players in the NFL...let's get rid of him!!!"

How many of those dipshits can actually use their peanut brains to access "insightful facts" such as Jack Lambert and Hines Ward both held out because they thought they were underpaid?

There is no way they do this deal with AB, mainly because it sets the precedent that we're dealing with these holdouts every time someone who plays well, and signed a contract feels they are playing a little better than the contract they signed. It's not happening, and if it does, the Steelers can get ready for the same from Wheaton and Bryant as well in the future. Bottom line, Brown can shoot for his new contract when there is a year left on his deal.

Joe

Referencing Jack Lambert has no bearing at all to Brown's situation. Jack was in the option year of his rookie contract and there was no salary cap in 1977 nor was there free agency for that matter. He was also a second round pick and a team captain. And as for Hines, he was entering the final year of his deal and had to be talked off the ledge by Cowher and then ended his holdout after just 15 days. The three situations aren't similar, assuming of course that Brown is serious and goes with some sort of lengthy holdout.

Yeah, sure, it's within his rights to holdout if he wants to. I just hope he realizes that the history of the Steelers in these situations is not on his side. There is no history of the Steelers reworking a player's deal for more money right in the middle of it. And aside from Hines, there's practically no history of them making a WR a top priority for the team. No, I don't think the Steelers would actively try to trade him. But if there was somebody out there crazy enough to offer the Steelers something, I have no doubt they'll listen. Because another thing the Steelers generally don't tolerate are noisy, unhappy players.

The Steelers have never negotiated with anyone with more than a year left on their contract, other than QB and Ben had to wait until his final year this last time. AB is in a losing situation here. This just makes him look worse to ownership and to the fans. He got a GREAT deal 2 years ago. If he has anyone to blame here, it is his agent for signing a long contract. With that said, it's not like he is being paid No. 2 WR money. His contract was worth more than he was when he signed it and it is still currently worth No. 1 WR money. If he is still on the team come camp and still holding out, he is a cancer to the team and I hope they get rid of him. Until then, I will wait and see but still would not be surprised to see them trade him.

I HOPE we are in the same boat with Wheaton and Bryant in the future, that would mean they became some of the best players at their positions. As of right now tho, that's just a dream. Brown is in the argument for BEST WR IN THE NFL TODAY! Wheaton isn't even the best #2 WR on our team, and Bryant has had one (not even full) year of success. Lets see those two put together a three year run like Brown has before we start talking about a similar situation happening with them in the future. BTW, those two are still on their ROOKIE deals which are scaled according to their draft slot. Apples to oranges in comparing them to Brown's situation.

AB is not in a losing situation. Anyone that thinks that we can just plug Bryant or Wheaton into his spot and not skip a beat on offense is just dreaming. Brown holds the cards here, he's a HUGE part of this offense and making it go. He got a great deal THREE years ago, but that's according to you and some other fans. It's not according to market value, which he is underpaid. Like I said before, look at the total guaranteed money, not the overall size of the contract. His contract numbers pale in comparison to his counterparts, which he has outplayed consistently. You might consider it No 1 WR money, but being paid the 14th highest in total, with only 20% guaranteed with players like Cobb, Nelson, Wallace, Cruz, Jennings, etc making more is an insult. Torrey Smith signed a deal barely 1m less than Browns deal, tell me they compare in any way shape or form. The market is set, and Brown is underpaid.

Steel Buckeye great link. If those guys have it figured out correctly in the table they provide
2015 $6,000,000 $3,787,500 $0 $0 $0 $9,787,500 $9,662,500 $125,000
2016 $8,250,000 $3,787,500 $0 $0 $0 $12,037,500 $5,875,000 $6,162,500
2017 $8,710,000 $2,087,500 $0 $0 $0 $10,797,500 $2,087,500 $8,710,000

This is for a trade or a cut showing the salary cap implications. The third column from the right shows what his hit is for this year and the rest of his contract if he honors it. The next column to the right shows his hit if traded and the far right shows cap savings. So in looking at this list it appears the prorated money or dead money. There was a little box that deals with the different trade or cut options by year and before June 1st. So if traded or cut this year or any later year there is in fact a net cap savings.

Draft picks are fairly inexpensive to sign and the steelers would be enough under the cap to sign a second first round pick this year. It does not look like the salary cap will limit them regarding the trade option. The big question regarding the cap would be how his new demands affect it and what kind of a message that sends to the other members of the team. Not saying how good AB is or his worth at this point but do you really want the players demands to be managing your cap as giving in at this point sends the wrong message to the rest of the team. I suspect there are lots of players that feel they are under paid at this point. For example what are we paying Beachum, granted he is not a premier left tackle but he is our left tackle and I would not be surprised if he is not being paid way below starting tackle money for example.

The thing with considering options is just that consider them and decide based on what will be best for the team and not a fan that thinks the world will end if a player is traded. Lots of folks thought the world would end when Wallace left but it kept on spinning just the same.

they should make an under the table deal, shut the **** up for a year and you will get extended next season with an important raise on your contract

If traded this year, the cap savings is only $125K. All I'm saying is that to me, getting that small of a cap relief and picking up a draft pick or a couple of draft picks (more likely) who will most likely not contribute at a high level immediately is not worth losing the proven production and play making ability of AB. It's just my personal preference considering that we are looking at the last years of a franchise QB; you don't take weapons away from him if you can help it. That's me thinking as a business decision.

As a fan, I love the way AB prepares, trains and the way he plays the game. It would be a sad day to see him go. But, I've seen other Steelers come and go. As my screen name implies, I was one of the happiest fans around when the Steelers picked 'Stonio. I was not happy to see him traded. However, I've watched them let Woodson, Porter, Harris and a slew of others go in my lifetime ... didn't change my allegiance.

I agree that AB is not in a losing situation. If he chooses to sit, and shoot himself in the foot by doing so, we'll be forced to draft a WR higher than we'd prefer, then enter the season with Wheaton, Bryant, Rookie, and scrubs at WR. So, AB does have some pull here.

I can understand his perceived selfishness, too. Like you said, others who aren't in the same category/class are being paid more.

Though, when he signed his current contract, he was at that point making a lot more than they were and had done next to nothing for it. Now the cycle has come back around and those same players are making more. Well, when his contract expires, or he's given a new one, he'll be making a LOT more than they would. It's all cyclical and right now he's on the bad part of it...and being compensated quite handsomely in the grand scheme of things.

This makes no sense. If AB sits out (let's say he shows up after 10 games), he misses out on 11/17ths of what he is scheduled to earn this year AND he gets a **** ton of fines starting with minicamp.

There is no way he misses even one game check --- why the hell is everyone panicking so much over this???
