I was listening to the Russillo and Kanell show on EPSN radio around 2 pm today and they were talking about whether or not Tomlin was a good coach. Russillo didn’t think so. They took a caller who was a Steeler fan who felt that Tomlin was not a good coach and he thought that Rooney has never fired Tomlin because of the “Rooney Rule”. This caller said “I am active on a lot of message boards, such as Steelers Nation, and there are a lot of people that feel the same ways as I do”. Ryan Clark was the next guest and was pretty upset that the caller mentioned Tomlin and the Rooney Rule. He then went on to explain why he thought Tomlin is a good coach.

It was pretty neat to hear Steeler Nation mentioned on the radio. So I am curious…which one of you was it?

I don't think Tomlin got hired for the rooney rule as much as Grimm blew it with drunken stupidity and whiz bailed because of the Rothlisberger relationship. I think he is an average coach in an era where average coaches are rather bad by old standards.

The best X's and O's guy happens to be a big cheat and the rest are still adjusting to a massive shift in gametime strategy. there isn't a Walsh or Lebeau right now who has redirected the strategy in the game to reflect the current rules and play... there isn't a top notch motivator and disciplinarian probably because the CBA has limited much of what made those coaches work. there just aren't any standouts. Tomlin is a coach. he has flaws. he has done some good thing, he has done some dumb things. he is completely replaceable if need be.

Whiz didn't leave because of Ben. He left because Rooney wouldn't give him the job when AZ had offered him a HC job. He wasn't going to wait. If Tomlin was white he wouldn't have even been interviewed. They interviewed him and Rivera. Tomlin was a 1 year DC with a background of coaching DBs. He had the worst secondary in the league that year. I don't think Rooney ever had intended to hire anyone that wasn't a minority. He wrote the rule for Pete sake. He wasn't going to look like a fool by hiring a white guy after his years of bitching about minority's not getting coaching jobs. Whiz probably realized this and left.

Tomlin won't be fired because the Steelers don't fire coaches. I don't think race plays into that. They are hardwired that way.

Tomlin was hired because he gave the best interview. Period.

We already had the hottest candidate available (Whiz) on staff but Art2 wanted to complete the interview process and gave no guarantees. He had to take the Cardinals job.

Grimm was a meat head.....Rivera, Chorizio......IMO Tomlin was the right and logical choice of all the candidates interviewed.

It was me.
I was shocked I even got thru.

I specificly said Steeler Nation and forum.. Thinking maybe they read this place.

While I don't think Tomlin was a terrible choice at the time of hiring im not enamored with him over the last few years.

Once I got into the screening process I really just wanted to say I agreed with Ryan Ruscillo. I don't think tomliin is s a good coach either.

Im not really sure that the rooney rule plays into it now. but it came out of my mouth, in trying to impart that Tomlin isn't the most popular guy among the serious fans. (this is my opinion)

I'm just curious how you know Tomlin gave the best interview period. Do you have some inside information or are you making an assumption? I have never really thrown my hat down on either side of the Tomlin hire. But I will right now and will stand behind it. Tomlin sucks as a coach. And we will be lucky to win a game without Ben there to save his ***. When Ben leaves we will all dream of the wins we use to have under Bill Cowher, and those ****** QB's.

I wasn't trying to start another love/hate Tomlin thread - that had been talked about quite a bit.

This was more about Steeler Nation getting mentioned on the radio and I was curious who it was. Cudos to you for doing it.

The Rooney's largely forced themselves into a corner with the" politically correct" stance they basically led, pertaining to employment of minority coaches.

Those out there who think the Steelers, the parents of the Rooney Rule, replaced Cowher with Tomlin totally apart from political consideration are naive to the point of being brain dead. There is little doubt about it.

Whisenhunt and even Arians, given his success as a HC with the Colts and Cardinals (with a healthy Palmer and his great relationship with Roethlisberger), probably would have been better choices, especially in hindsight

The Rooney's cannot be politically viewed as hypocrites, especially among their socially progressive wine-tasting buddies.

Hence, Coach Tomlin was inevitably born.

I believe Mike was hired because he wowed them with his interview. Said all the right things they wanted to hear and they were impressed with him.

They had coordinators in place on both sides and they felt he would be a good manager of men & grow into a long term head coach.

I will say he seemed impressive & what people around the league were saying nothing but good.

I even feel like those first few years he was no nonsense, hard nosed, and what he lacked in experience he made up for by hard work, and discipline.

Now that the vets are gone he is being exposed and he seems to be comfortable that he is never going to get fired, and it seems to me he isn't that same guy as they hired.

Maybe because he was new around older proven vets who were very successful and he felt he had to earn their respect.

Now its all turned over to his team and he looks like he is more easier on the players. We have seen a lack of discipline from this team, not a focus on detail. They often seem unprepared, un motivated, and they lose to under 500 teams regularly.

I felt as this year was going to be the year we see who Mike Tomlin really is. This is his baby, and his guys.

This I believe to be true. I think like truly great QBs, there is a limit on truly great coaches. I would say in all eras, though. When Noll was coaching, specifically in the 70s, there were only 4 I would say were truly great. Noll, Landry, Shula and maybe Madden. Bud Grant? Bum?

When Tomlin was hired he was probably the best choice. I think Whiz would have been a good choice, too, but Whiz is in no way, shape or form a great coach, either. I have really turned on Tomlin, but in his defense, it isn't like there is this long list of coaches, white, black or otherwise that are these great hires. They look good for a while, then things level off. Kinda like Tomlin. I have described just about every coach outside of the Cheater.

And all this time I thought Mike Tomlin was hired because he "obviously" does great pressers?

I liked Tomlin at first. Even though we won the SB his second year, i started having doubts. The problem i see is he or the team is not showing growth. Draft picks are not developing, can't find good Dbs, questionable player descisions, poor game plans or game management, etc etc.... He seems to lack Xs and Os knowledge..

I think it's easy to understand the Rooneys loved Tomlin's pedigree.....OBVIOUSLY!

Theres such a bash Tomlin addiction around here..you know that.....some folks trip over themselves getting to the forum just so they can repeat their stance on the matter. Put his name in the title of a thread.....150 posts in 2 hrs guaranteed

What is Whisenhunts record as HC? There was never any coach as criticized as Arian's while he was here so either he got a lot smarter or there are a lot of brain dead posters on the Board. Ain't hindsite wonderful !

This is just something that boggles my mind. Antonio Brown developed, Kelvin Beachum developed, Lawrence Timmons developed, Cameron Heyward developed, David Decastro developed, Maurkice Pouncy developed, Tuitt is developing, Shazier is developing, Sean Spence came back from a DEVASTATING injury and has developed, Vince Williams has developed, Marcus Wheaton has shown signs...we have all these players that were drafted that ARE or HAVE developed, but the line still gets thrown out there as if no team has any draft failures.

True. I guess Heyward, Tuitt, Timmons, Shazier, Brown, Bell and Wheaton arent worth ****. Explosive offensive numbers and those weapons are a fluke. Fire him now and bring in Jim Harbaugh or Greg Schiano...somebody that can instill discipline in these kids and make all of em all pros in a season.

And truth be told Ben has developed. He wasn't doing all the things he is doing now in 2006. The offense has evolved from a run first to one of the most prolific in the league. But that's not Xs and Os??

Way to go Bleeder. Ever since your days of stumbling into the womens restroom, I knew you'd lead us as a single voice.

I think we're all indebted to Bleeder Johnson for clearly stating what needed to be said. I'm particulary glad that these lovely children were here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic pissed off at Steelers head coach outrage, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age.

Clark's follow up was totally expected. What else do you think he'd say. He might be looking to Tomlin or one of his buddies for a job one of these days..

So if Tomlin was no longer our coach, who do we get? Another retreaded head coach? A position coach? A college coach? Personally I'd like to see Joey Porter as our coach. Not sure if he's a great X's and O's guy but I think he'd lead this team like Cowher did with a real passion for the game.

Hold on playa....Ben is "Cowhers guy". Although he "may" have started to ascend to greater heights under the Tomlin era, you cant count that under Tomlin....see...ya just cant......ya just cant do that....Cowhers man...Get it ?
