According To PG. Tomlin micromanaged Defense. & Changes are happening from Rooney

There needed to be a change on that side of the ball because something wasn’t working. Tomlin took over most of the defense and made many of the defensive calls in the second half of the season. If true, why is Keith Butler still here? Why has he not been shown the door or, ahem, “resigned” to pursue other opportunities? Tomlin has defensive roots, so perhaps that’s why he has kept Butler around. The defense is as much Tomlin’s baby as it is Butler’s, and if that side of the ball stinks, well, he has to take some of the blame.

Writer is throwing out a lot without saying who said what. So many back n forths with this topic you wonder what report was the true one in reference to the defense and who was running what.

So once again. Reporters are saying Tomlin ran the D

Players are saying Butler ran the D.

Someone's story is off...

Regardless they need to sit in a room & film study, and see what didn't work and own that ****.Not to us, but to themselves. And veer away from the suck. Fix it.

Maybe... or, well....lets say at work my boss tells me to do something... i tell my crew to do it... if a reporter asked them, they would say I was telling them to do it... Id say it was my boss... both would be truefrom a perspective...

Well if he did take over the defense he’s no better than what we had. It reminds me of whenI was a kid. We used to take wet TP, wad it up and throw it up to the ceiling to see if it would stick.

Well either way it sucked all around. The buck stops at the top no matter what. Just fix it.

Until Shazier got hurt it was vastly improved over previous years. It stilled needed more but it was on the upswing.

What Tomlin needs to do is work more closely with Butler and if Butler and the D are not getting the job done, overtake, I really want to see some 4-2-45 looks and more man to man and delete 6 yds of LOS from the playbook with Haden, Burns, Hilton, Sutton @ Allen there is 0 reason why at anytime we should have a CB 6 yds of the WR, at max 3 yds vs guys like Julio, AJ.

It's time to take a deep breath, step back and take stock in what's happened since the season came to a sad, unexpected end with the loss to the Jags.

Let's not forget we're the Steelers, where things are always looked at from a deeper, wider perspective, relative to most teams. Change comes slow and steady, never fast and furious.

At the end of the season we were told there would be little to no changes with the coaching staff. Fans rightfully were pissed off, demanding heads to roll.

Then, slowly, like an iceberg melting, news started trickling in....

Richard Mann retired. Daryl Drake gets hired, supposedly one of the best WR coaches in the business.
Munchak is finalist for head coaching gig in Arizona, removes his name from consideration, decides to stay put. Huge move to provide continuity on O.
Much-maligned Todd Haley doesn't have his contract renewed. It's announced Randy Fichtner has been promoted. Ben is noticably enthused, is now talking about playing at least three more seasons.
Well-respected Karl Dunbar is hired to coach the D-line, John Mitchell is moved to full time assistant head coach.
Carnell Lake resigns quietly, leaves with class. Tom Bradley, a stand-out college defensive coordinator is hired to replace him. Promises fundamentals and focus on tackling.

So here we are. Kept some key people (Munchak, Mitchell), promoted others (Fichtner) and brought in some fresh blood from outside (Drake, Dunbar & Bradley).

I don't know what planet some of you live on, but that's as much change as we've had around here in years. It tells me this team is far from content with regular season success, or the fact we were in the AFC championship just last year. These changes seem to be happening with care and consideration and not just forcing change for change's sake. This is the Steelers way. That's what makes me love rooting for this team.

The last point of contention remains up in the air, who the **** is actually running this defense? I hope this is worked out in-house and there is more clarity and consistancy, be it schemes, play calling, in-game decisions, fundamentals, tackling, etc. Tomlin and Butler need to figure this out and get their **** together. There can't be too many cooks in the kitchen.

One good aspect of these new coaches, it will bring about uneasiness with players. Competition and of course change. I thought the D -line might have gotten a little comfy in their skin. Coach Mitchell had been there for awhile. With that you can see a little complacency. Although some of their play was held back by injury. Dunbar has an attention to detail type of history that I welcome as a fan, I think he will bring out the most in a decently talented group.

Then you have a secondary coach who will be excited to join the NFL ranks, and has a lot of experience. Dwarfing what Lake had. And I really believe in coaching experience to get the job done on a smaller scale like as a positional coach.

And on O let's be honest Haley's 50% red zone proficiency was ugly in his last year compared to talent. If we want to play fantasy yardage league's you would love him. But we are playing for championships. And need our QB in the best position to win. We need to come out of the gates stronger, and finish stronger.

Coaches have been added to help accomplish this.

Now comes preparation for free agency then of course the draft.

If you divide the offseason into three sections.

1 Coaching improvements
2 Free Agency
3 Draft

I think I am pretty happy with one. Restructures have gave me a glimmer of hope with 2.

And 3 usually has a decent track record.

Overall a good start IMO.

slash, you laid it out pretty good but your "#3 usually has a decent track record" wasn't always the case. Cool Shades and Co. had a very dry spell there. It wasn't until
the last couple or 3 years that his draft has started looking respectable. I'm looking for Cool Shades & Co. to hit this draft quite high and get either or both S & ILB. Our
coaching changes went further than I expected but was still hoping for a Joey exit. I'm thinking that the STEELERS will come away with the right contract for Bell or will
TAG him with hopes of trade. Then the OPEN CARD is what's left or available for two free agent acquisitions, S and ILB. TEAM FIRST

Well.....a good part of that 2nd half was with a street free agent in place of an injured Ryan Shazier.

Well doesn't that also reflect on the decision on players to begin with..when you lose your best LB and Then have to go to the street to find a replacement...shouldnt you have the best possible replacement on the team? I can see having to find more depth on the street but not the direct replacement

We also played a very weak schedule with few good QBs. We luckily missed Rodgers, Luck and Watson or the points against would have been much higher as well as a few more losses.

Anyone that has watched this team over the years, knows Tomlin had alot of say in the D since Butler took over, Butler is far more aggressive than we've been

did they?

I see some high round flops here and there but on a year to year basis as I look back, overall some solid picks.

Think about this, remember how many Steelers were picked to the pro bowl this year? Those came about in the draft.

I have so little faith in Tomless...

He was a college receiver who pretends to be a "defensive" coach.

It's ridiculous. The best thing he can do on game days is STFU.

Coaching changes look solid, I agree.....But do Porter and Oslavsky get a pass? Who have they coached up? They couldn't fit Harrison into a depleted linebacker core, and I'm not going to start about the shoddy play from all after Shazier went down. Bud, Watt, Moats, Chickalo, Spence, and Ski (I forget his name)....what a collective group!

But do Porter and Oslavsky get a pass?

Jerry made a later round pick a solid starter, and Shazier into a pro bowler. He gets a pass. I won't diss him for having to play Spence. Not much you can do with a crap hand.

Now Porter I have been calling for him to get axed for awhile. But at this point it looks like we are stuck with him. Bud has shown flashes but I thought he regressed this year against the run, and was mediocre as a pass rusher. Watt showed well, but far from a finished product. Even he tailed off at the end of the year. I think at this point for now we are stuck with Peezy. A prime example that just because you played well, doesn't mean you can coach well.

Fired up over this. I try to not get too anxious, but I agree 100%.
