I was asked a question today from a Raven assistant coach. How many more Lombardi's would the Steelers have if Ben and Cowher had stayed together.

I almost throw up in thinking of the answer. Can you imagine Cowher with this defense and Ben.

I can’t envision Cowher coaching nearly 3 decades so Ben & this defense is not relevant.

It’s not exactly easy to win the dang thing and fact is Tomlin got there twice with that core that began to age out in 2011. In that realistic timeframe max would have been 3 total

so the ravens coach is suggesting the Steelers should get rid of HCMT?

I really don't know, as the league has morphed considerably into a passing league since wild Bill has coached. Love me some Cowher just don't know how he handles that big change in philosophy.

We came out throwing the ball in the 05 playoff run.

That is true. It was just a small sample size. I think it is possible he would have had more SBs. The what ifs just leave a lot of question marks for me.

agreed, but Cowher seemed to have better X's and O's mind than Tomlin. I don't think we would've seen that drop off from the defense like we did from 11-18 because he rebuilt the roster and took those new rosters to AFCCG's.

Well a Ravens assistant did get a head coaching job and several others promotions elsewhere I believe also . Mike Tomlin's coaching tree looks like ( I ) some tree!! Even Horrible has a coaching tree with branches

No less than 2 more,maybe 3.

At least 25. Maybe 30.

Cowher took over in 92 the starters he had in 1992 to the his first Super Bowl app in 1995, there were 17 new starters on that 95 team, he turned over almost the entire roster. From 95 to the next AFCCG in 1997, there were 11 new starters, then from 97 to 01, 17 new starters, then from 01 to 05 there were 15 new starters, we were never able to keep free agents during most of his tenure. He did a good job of rebuilding the roster, I think he would've done a much better job building around Ben.

just adding a couple points. Donahoe was the "GM" (Director of Football Ops) from 91 till his ousting in 2K. Remember the power struggle between BC and TD? Good times. It lead to Kevin C. taking the "GM" role in 2000.

Interesting memory you bring up about not being able to sign FA's - I remember all the talk about TRS being a lot of the issue with that. Heinz Field opened in 01 (I think).

Meh I liked Cowher, but he had his own chronic problems

The guy probably wins maybe one more super bowl, the same as Tomlin

He was too conservative... and he wasn’t a huge xs and os guy either... his philosophy was to outphysical a team... it failed miserably in the playoffs when you have physically talented equal teams... there is absolutely nothing to make me think he would have totally embraced a modern passing game... we’d just have different types of problems

Andy Reid is the best head coach and that’s literally because the league shaped the game to fit his style and not vice versa...

The to conservative thing was just a narrative, go back and look at how many times we threw compared to ran the ball in the first half vs NE in 2001.
We threw the ball 52 times in the 1994 AFCCG and didn't trail until mid way through the 4th.
Came out throwing early in all 3 games on that 2005 run.

I don't remember many times if anytime, that his teams were heavy favorites and then just didn't show up. IMO, he's a much better coach than Tomlin is, would that have led to more rings, who knows, but he was definitely a better coach

People probably forget there was a hige push to fire Cowher in 2000-2003.... and playoff record was part of that... 2004 and 05 were a godsend... then he was just mentally shot and done for personal reasons

it was 1999-2000, had the best record in the AFC in 2001 and beat the defending super bowl champions in the playoffs easily, and won another playoff game in 2002, would've been 2 in Joe Nedney didn't act like he was shot when he missed that FG.

ABSOLUTELY agree. Cowher had way better team leader type character to all f his teams. Tomlin's teams have always seem to lack HIGH leadership which comes from the top.

EDIT: Would "tony" have lasted as long as he did on a Cowher team? I think some of those players set him straight and early in the time frame.

Serious question.

Do you think Cowher would be as good a coach today with the dominance of social media like it is that was not around 15 years ago when he retired?

I thought the world of Cowher, but he has been out long enough now that he was coaching in a much different era. Hell, Tomlin when he began was coaching in a different era than he is now. I think back then you could hold a guys attention more than you can today. For example, I was disheartened when I heard Claypool praise JuJu for helping him develop his "brand." That's what he thought of. How the heck do you get through to guys with that kind of thinking? I know I couldn't do it. Cowher is older than me. I just wonder if he would struggle somewhat with todays player.

Moreover, I think he knows it, which is one of the reasons he has no desire to coach again.

I will add they would have at least one more before Ben if they would have financed the team like they do now. Cowher had huge turnover. There was none of this resign and big FA signings when Cowher coached this team.
