I don’t think you can blame or credit Big Game James for all of Allar’s shortcomings or successes, but I believe he was a contributing factor. Allar needs to get out of his own head and play. Do that, Fix up his mechanics and he could be the next 12 year QB for the Steelers. Or he could end the next stiff Cliff. It’s ultimately up to him.

Yeah overall Allar has good mechanics but he definitely has had some head scratching moments where he gets off his mark or throws off his back foot. But at the combine they looked extremely clean. I mean you could really tell he had been working with someone. Lets get him in town and start working with him!

Howard at KSU was not a full time starter. So yeah, heckuva junp from apples to oranges.
In any event, let me say this one more time for those who can’t seem to get it. I don’t think either Howard or Allar is the answer. Love to be wrong about one or both. However, our “real” QB1 has not left the college (maybe HS) ranks.

That last line is just plain mean

I find it interesting that some of y'all bring up Howard as if I'm going to defend him like I have some schoolboy crush. Nah, I don't have that syndrome like others do for Allar. As I stated previously. I don't think either of them are the answer. I hope they both prove me wrong. As far as weapons, they'll both have decent ones with the Steelers. Let's see what they can or can't do with them.

As a UGA fan I wouldn’t have felt like Beck was some sort of savior, so I get it. As a diehard fan you definitely see the warts on your QBs. It is strange how many PSU fans want to overlook Allar’s warts.

Beck is likely a better pro than Allar, but I’m definitely happier with the Howard/Allar combo than if Beck were part of the QB room (I’m not sure how that even makes sense lol)

I definitely wouldn’t have been defending Beck, maybe it’s that oh so punchable face of his…can’t explain it. Maybe it’s the Miami taint on him?

And this is exactly why you take shots at QBs and surround them with talent. Maybe you find one who clicks within a system and elevates their game with the talent around them. Ben Roethlisbergers and Josh Allens aren’t exactly falling off trees.

And even then Ben had a lot of talent around him when he entered the league - his rookie year he had 2 first team all pros, a second team all pro and two pro bowlers (2 of whom are now hall of famers) on offense as well as four pro bowlers on defense (incl 3 first/second team all pros). Can't recall who was All Pro but the All Pro/Pro Bowlers were Faneca (OG), Smith (OT), Hartings (OC), Bettis (RB) and Ward (WR).

On his podcast Ben himself has made the point that he benefited from being surrounded by talent in his early years, and believes the Steelers should do the same now.

Franklin had the right idea to go all-in in 2025, he just brought in the wrong personnel (and misused what was already there). As you say, Knowles was a bad fit from day one. I think you're imagining that Smith "forced" his coordinators to do anything. I know for a fact that Kotelnicki's offensive philosophy did not change. Smith had more faith in Kaytron Allen, Kobe Howard, and Andrew Rappleyea than Franklin did...that's about it.

You can't keep making excuses for Allar against Villanova, bro. It's embarrassing. He sucked in that game, period. Again, I have no other choice but to root for him now that he's a Steeler -- we'll all find out for sure if you and the others blaming Franklin for Allar's poor performances have a legitimate claim. I hope you do, but I doubt it.

Terry Smith didn't change the Kotalniki offense, it's more like he made him go past page 2 of the playbook. There were more quick throws, more vertical throws. Playing Rappleyea made a difference. The RB rotation made more sense.

Allar had some bad throws vs Villanova and some good ones. I keep bringing that game up because against an FCS team, Penn State should have guys getting wide open and they weren't really. Even an FCS team knew what was coming and had no fear of PSU receivers.

Allar might be a bust. He has bad habits. But he said that McCarthy grilled him at the combine and the steelers had him in for another pre draft visit. Reportedly, Allar impressed with his answers on the whiteboards.

I'd give Allar no shot of developing under Tomlin, but with McCarthy, I like his chances. Aaron Rodgers took years to develop. Rodgers coach at Cal insisted he hold the ball by his ear, old school. They had to redo his release. He sat for 2 years and didn;t light it up immediately. McCarthy did a good job with Dak in Dallas as well.

Allar has the size, the arm, the smarts. I just hope they can get his nerve back because it feels like Franklin coached him not to make mistakes rather than to make plays. It's not all Franklin's fault, but he was a big part.

But the main point is even against an FCS team, the WRs are barely open. The completions to WR are contested or tackled almost immediately.

Maybe you just remember more vertical throws being successful later in the season. Perhaps it's just that the #2 guy, after playing a few games, started executing the offense better than Allar did.

Allar has the prototypical size and arm, I'll give you that. Smarts? He's certainly not unintelligent, but even you must admit that he lacked a high football IQ when making some of his poor decisions in the biggest moments of the most important games. Can McCarthy fix that? I guess we can all hope so.
