with LeBeau forced out who is the leading candidates for D coordinator ?

Anyone that knows the rooneys and the steelers should know 100 percent what we are going to do.

I will put my house on it. We are promoting Keith butler. The rooneys have promised him and he and Tomlin have ties.

Butler was d coord at ark st and mike was d back coach.

Furthermore Butler played in a 3-4 scheme while In the NFL with hawks and has never coached anything but a 3-4.

We are for sure hiring Keith and will be running a 3-4.

Who wants to bet ?

After the Wisenhunt / Grimm / Tomlin thing, no bet.

Time waits for no man. Keith Butler appears in and I think it's a good move. He's been here 11 yrs and knows the team.

Perhaps Coach LeBeau will spent a year in the sunny confines of Arizona with Arians but it's time to play golf.

ONLY if he decides to put his stamp on the system, get rid of the 10-15 yard cushions, simplify the scheme to get the youngsters playing faster, etc.

Half of the NFL teams that picked ahead of the Steelers. And I seem to recall the majority of this board didn't like him for us. Concerns included his being too old, too weak, too slow, and potentially too fragile (neck). While his neck has held up thus far, his weakness and lack of speed is glaring.

And I also recall many stating that he played in a scheme in college that allowed him to get in the backfield untouched, something that wouldn't often happen in the NFL, ...they were right about that too.

I can't claim that I saw these things, I don't watch many college games. But I remember reading it here and hoping the Steelers passed on him.

He was a bad choice, and a lot of people seemed to call it....., except Tomlin and Colbert.

I wouldn't throw out the baby with the bath water, Colbert seems able to pick some special offensive players, but they need to bring in some help evaluating defensive players. These two guys don't know what they're doing on that side of the ball.

A lot of people are pretty smart who don't make draft evaluations too quick. And yes-that means waiting more than 16 games for Jones, Shazier, and even Archer.

per profootballtalk Tomlin is interviewing Butler today.........

I'm fine with Butler, but I hope Tomlin does interview at least two more strong candidates for the search to be thorough.

It's not about predicting the future; it's about examining the profile of the player. Jarvis was small, slow, and had an injury history. Archer lacked a position, was microscopic, was a chronic fumbler, had an injury history. Those profiles just don't pan out more than once in a blue moon.

The fact that Jarvis was passed on 16 times isn't the concern. It's the fact that he was an ultra-productive SEC pass rusher who was passed on 16 times. Teams go crazy for guys who achieved much, much, much less than that. But none of the ****** teams with tons of holes wanted the SEC's all-time leading sacker? That's not a red flag? Then add in his awful workouts and injury history and you have an even scarier profile.

Furthermore, the whole "every rookie needs years to evaluate" thing has been pretty much blown out of the water. Rookies and second-year guys - even QBs - are contributing in big ways and even starting all over the place. Teams are turning over their whole franchises or positional units to raw rookies. I can't buy anymore that a rookie is just a blank slate who needs years of seasoning and observation.

Tomlin isn't smart enough to interview more than one candidate, let alone any strong candidates.

4-12 here we come!

I'll give Shazier a pass even if there are rumors about his toughness. But if you need to see more of Jarvis Jones to realize he will be at best serviceable, I don't know what to say. As far as Archer, c'mon. He is at best a gimmick guy. There is no system here. You run a route, catch a ball and make people miss. If you are a 170 lb guy and can't make people miss, you can't play. He sure as hell can't be listed as a back. He is taking a spot. He can't block. They even said he can't.
Lets put everything in perspective here. Heyward looked like a bust, he flashed in the season before this one. He played steady this year. He is a good player. Jarvis Jones absolute ceiling is a good player. More likely than not he is serviceable to a bust from every possible way you look at it.

with the schedule that they have for 2015, you might not be far off. This off-season and next season could determine the future of Tomlin. There is a lot of question marks and holes that need filled. It will take all hands on deck to have a winning record, let alone win the AFCN again. I would be interested to know how the Rooneys really feel about Dick resigning, if that is the case, since they were shocked at the news.

I agree 100%

but they could sign him quick, he's without a contract, they are meeting today

Quoted for truth.
As someone else said, bet the house that Butler is your next OC. Then you have assistant LB coaches Jerry Olsavsky and Joey "They Shot Me In Denver" Porter. J. Peezy is only in his first year coaching so I would promote Olsavsky to Butler's spot since he's been coaching here for 5 years or so and bump Porter to his spot. Which may have been the plan of progression anyway.

So Ron, are you saying that they hired Porter as a lowly assistant linebackers coach knowing that they'd bump HOF'er LeBeau out at the end of the year and promote Butler?"
Not exactly but this is the pros and you always have a Plan A, B, C, and D.

The more I read, the more I think it has to be Butler. He has put off and the Steelers have blocked him going elsewhere. They had a handshake deal a few years ago that he would take over when LeBeau retires. The team said they will interview others but, if it is going to be Butler, just sign him this week and be done with it. The sooner, the better.

Butler get rid of the cushion play Cortez 5 yds off his man if it is a WR like AJ or if Gordon is back by the mistake by the lake, if Cortez is lined up vs a guy like Sanu or Torrey press coverage. On the other side we need a DB like PJ Williams or Trae Waynes 6"1 180 4.43, Olomu is risky if he measures at the combine less than 5"10 he could be considered plug in from day 1 slot CB and could take 2 years to play on a island. the kid is dynamic but if we consider him as a #1 CB we would have to play a lot of cover 2 and cover 3 with Shazier dropping often.
Jalen Collis PJ Williams are also CB's that could be #1.
even IF WE GO cb ROUND 1 OVER SS I CAN SEE THE ROTATION AS LCB ALLEN RCB GAY SLOT MCCAIN DIME CB ROOKIE HIGH PICK.

i THINK WE COULD GET OUR NEW SECONDARY FROM LSU SS COLLINS @ CB COLLIS
Colbert must hit home runs on day 1 picks, round 3 @ 4 he can upgrade the pass rush and look for long term LT, i think we should sign Micheal roos and let Foster go and slide Beachum back to LG.
Moats should be brought back 2 year deal along with McCain blake

If we are talking O-line I am thinking RT is the biggest weakness............

we locked Gilbert, Adams is last year of his deal, Gilbert trimmed this year from last year from 330 or more to about 320, had much leaner arms, no exess fat, he just needs to bulk up his arms add 5-8 LBS of pure muscle if so he should be fine. OT i think with all the weapons we have adding a vet like Roos can give that extra time and a reliable guy to play suggs and if the browns bring back Sheard, if they don't, I would let Worlids walk and sign Sheard.

Haley will need to have have more 3 wr and twin te sets as the base where the 3 wr's are Brown Bryant and Bell in the slot and I would target a cheap te like Luke Stocker, Speath just doesn't offer enough, same with Palmer they are just blocking te nether can be used even as a safety valve starting 5 wide is to risky vs Baltimore and Cincy, even Clevland.
Gilbert needs help so you put a te like Stocker on his side chip on to the flat, Miller on the blindside pancake the rusher and curl up the seam.

I would love to see Butler use a 4-2-5 as his nickel
LE Mcullers
NG Heyward
3T Tuitt
RE Jones
MLB Timmons
LB Shazier

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu will not be playing football for the 2015-16 season. His knee is basically shredded. Would not be worth or 1st or 2nd for a slot CB who couldnt play at all next year

So I have seen nothing on any interviews yet other teams are in the process. Is this another example of Tomlin looking at one of his friends instead of a coach. if we are going in a new and improved direction don't you want someone with some background?

What was the first example?

Wait....who was the FIRST Tomlin friend hired ?.....thats a new one.

Tomlin and the FO will try and find the "right mind" for this DC position...if its Butler, great. If not then im sure theyll interview and go with the best guy that fits the philosophy of where they need to get this defense. Hiring a "friend" not qualified will result in everyone gettin the ax down the line. If this "friend" turns out to be Pepper Johnson or Raheem Morris and they are more than qualified (with a proven body of work, being the key), then no one should have an issue with any one of those.

A fresh set of ideas, something new...exotic.... from a different mind that can build on to what Dick built would be fabulous. Bottom line, is this league changed substantially from 2008 to 2011 and we were slow to adapt...our brand or shall i say Dicks brand of defense became ineffective when offenses and rules dictated change. Maybe now we go new scheme, new mindset and a new profile of a player for this future DC and defense he wants to implement.

Change is good.....now is as good of a time to rebuild this defense.
