with LeBeau forced out who is the leading candidates for D coordinator ?

A team even worse than us at getting to the quarterback.

I hear ya 448. I used them as an example because i actually think Tuitt and Heyward (if turned loose) are much better than Dunlap/Gilberry. Our LB core would be better as well, IMO. The only area we would be weaker may be in the secondary but i sure as hell don't think we are that much worse there either despite the fact that Cincy has more low round CBs on their squad than any other NFL team. They drafted them and brought them in...but it doesn't seem to have helped BECAUSE they aren't able to get pressure to go w it, IMO.

No way Lake gets the DC position.

*** I hope we don't go Indy Tampa bay cover two zone. It's out dated. We need a monster defense that moves to the ball like a pack crazed dogs. One that puts the fear of an *** beating into the hearts of qbs. You have to be able to account for the spread option and receivers like dez Bryant and that **** te in ne. Forget the nose tackle middle linebacker and the ss. They have gone the way of the fullback. You need two tackles cat quick that can stunt. You need two inside linebackers like the 3-4 that can pickup slot receivers and hold them on the line. A linebacker that can defense the bigger pass catching te/s. You need a big 6-3 230ish rover that can be moved into the "hotspot" of the zone. Add 2 des that can pass rush and set the edge hard and two bds that can hold on the line and run, a fast smart free saftey, you got a modern defense.

LOL...good post....

This!!!!!!

Well, there are reports that Ryan wants to retain Schwartz, but also wants to bring his guy from NY. He can't have both, so it will interesting if Schwartz stays since he was passed over for the HC position. Buffalo's D was pretty damn good under Schwartz. Would be a great hire if we could get him.

I'd be happy with Schwartz.

As for Butler: if he was okay with drafting Jarvis Jones, then I have no use for him at the DC position. I don't hate Jarvis Jones, he seems like a good person, but damn was he a hugh miss that almost everyone saw, except for the Steelers.

I talked to a diehard Buffalo fan and this was his take. Not that I agree with his Steelers DL assessment.

Schwartz has done an outstanding job in Buffalo. They have a wicked DL, but an average secondary and young LBs. I didn't expect their D to turn out as good as it did. He ran a combo of 4-3 and 3-4, adjusting to Pettine's (basically Rex Ryan's) old scheme and personnel. I would've been fine with him becoming HC, even though he flamed out in Detroit. Everyone flames out there. I think he's the best DC doing it now. The Steelers DL is their weakness, and if you gave him a few picks, he'd turn the D around quick. I doubt he'll stay under Ryan. His players certainly love him, as evidenced by them carrying him off the field when they beat the Lions. Dude shut down Rodgers and Manning this year, which is no small feat.

Yeah, if he thinks their DL is their weakness then he is totally out of touch with this team. Interesting comments regarding the actual coach, though.

May the Schwartz be with you...us?

Someone already said it but Shazier could be a SS ala Kam Chancellor for us in a 4-3 hybrid. Leaving Williams/Jones at SLB, Timmons at MLB and Spence at WLB. Might work but who knows?

Who is everyone that saw Jones as a miss?

Papillon

just read Ryan is bringing his Jet D coordinator over.

So Schwartz is available............

I like the Schwartz idea - especially now that Sexy Rexy is off the table.

Other options to consider (from the collegiate ranks):

1. Kirby Smart, DC, Alabama
2. Jeremy Pruitt, DC, Georgia

Both candidates, if you will, have many years of experience in the 3-4 (hybrid included) systems...

Take your time, Coach, this is a BIG shoe to fill and we can't take too many steps back...

Half of the NFL teams that picked ahead of the Steelers. And I seem to recall the majority of this board didn't like him for us. Concerns included his being too old, too weak, too slow, and potentially too fragile (neck). While his neck has held up thus far, his weakness and lack of speed is glaring.

And I also recall many stating that he played in a scheme in college that allowed him to get in the backfield untouched, something that wouldn't often happen in the NFL, ...they were right about that too.

I can't claim that I saw these things, I don't watch many college games. But I remember reading it here and hoping the Steelers passed on him.

He was a bad choice, and a lot of people seemed to call it....., except Tomlin and Colbert.

I wouldn't throw out the baby with the bath water, Colbert seems able to pick some special offensive players, but they need to bring in some help evaluating defensive players. These two guys don't know what they're doing on that side of the ball.

Anyone that knows the rooneys and the steelers should know 100 percent what we are going to do.

I will put my house on it. We are promoting Keith butler. The rooneys have promised him and he and Tomlin have ties.

Butler was d coord at ark st and mike was d back coach.

Furthermore Butler played in a 3-4 scheme while In the NFL with hawks and has never coached anything but a 3-4.

We are for sure hiring Keith and will be running a 3-4.

Who wants to bet ?

Just keep in mind there is nobody out there who ran as consistently as good a defense as LeBeau has over the last 10+ years.

Time waits for no man. Keith Butler appears in and I think it's a good move. He's been here 11 yrs and knows the team.

Perhaps Coach LeBeau will spent a year in the sunny confines of Arizona with Arians but it's time to play golf.

Yep, just like we promoted Russ Grim, oh wait, well, just like we promoted Kirby Wilson, oh, wait. I guess I'll wait and see.

The one name not heard here yet, and I'm shocked someone hasn't mentioned him yet is Will Muschamp. Dude can flat-out coach some D. Yes, he just signed-on with Auburn but he'd be a PERFECT fit if you are trying to move to the 4-3 with great cover schemes. He is absolutely FANTASTIC at developing the DBs and isn't afraid to try stuff.

Also, NFL teams are going to start looking a 4-3/4-2-5 hybrid defenses (I think that's exactly what Seattle is doing) to combat the up-tempo passing attacks.
