Report: Steelers Reportedly Trading For Jacksonville Linebacker Joe Schobert

It's reported we are sending a 2022 sixth round pick. Spillane was never starting LB material. He played above his head last year. Schobert was also signed by the previous jax regime, and doesn't fit what Meyer wants to do. Jax has tons of cap space, so I'm sure they'll eat some of the contract to facilitate the trade and get out of the contract. This is clearly a move to upgrade Spillane.

As for everyone wishing for a CB, keep in mind Fitz hasn't played, Haden hasn't played. Two big parts of your secondary that DEFINITELY change how the rest performs.

Bosa got 7m every year as a signing bonus and another 7 as a roster bonus in year one which is the only other way to make the money guaranteed. He got 1m as a base year one for a total of 15 in the first year. The only way to get around Watts number not going up would be to lengthen it beyond 5 and back loading what? The money has to be in his pocket. He is not playing for future base. It's gotta be guarenteed.

which one is that. The first down inside linebacker hole. You have to pay 7 million dollars to do that. Or are you taking the guy you gave up a 2nd and 3rd pick off the field in passing situations?

That's not how the salary cap yearly contribution works, Sask. The cap hit for any one year is not the total amount of the contract divided by the number of years. Instead, only the SIGNING BONUS is divided by the length of the contract, and then the yearly salary is added on to that.

I'm aware of that Steeltime. But in order to call money guarenteed it can't be base salary. TJ is getting a **** load of of guarenteed money.

They actually do guarantee salaries for certain contracts. Kirk Cousins got one of them in Minnesota.

Nope. Teams can and frequently do guarantee a certain number of years on the contract.

There's more than one way to skin a cat. Signing bonus isn't the only way for guaranteed money. In fact, Mr Schobert's contact was 5 year, 53m with 23m guaranteed. But only 12m was signing bonus. His first two years were guaranteed salary.

They can also use option bonuses, and can use language in the contract that they are guaranteed. They can be spread out like a signing bonus, but get triggered later on in the contract.

They could give TJ 50m signing bonus, which he gets year one, but is spread out the length on the contract for cap purposes. They could add in an option bonus of 30m, which could start year 2 of the contract, and be spread out the rest of the years.

Bosa's contract was 35m signing bonus. The 78m guarantee number is his signing bonus, roster bonus for 2020, and his 2020, 2021 and 2022 salary. His 2023 salary is injury guaranteed, but fully guarantees on the third day of the 2022 league year.

TJ already counts 10m, give him 45m signing bonus, guarantee his 2021, 2022, and 2023 salary. And a similar extra year with injury guaranteed that can fully guarantee. His first year could be 1m base, 9m signing bonus, cap hit of 10m. Could be less of they did 36m signing bonus and other guarantees.

Getting to or going below 10 (as some are saying) on a 140 million dollar contract is fiscally irresponsible. He is not going to be a better player in '22, '23. So you are paying too much for past performance. Pushing off salary and bringing in guys like this and pushing in chips like this would be ok if this team was truly a championship contender. What will be the total man games started on the oline on this team? zero for the centre. 8 or so for the right guard, less than that for the right tackle, 1 season for the left tackle who looked completely lost against the Eagles.

I'm not cynical. I'm just a realist. When you have seen the movie this many times and you expect a different ending.......
Doesn't mean I won't enjoy the games. Doesn't mean I'm not excited about Schobert. I just have some real world questions about the way this team is run. I feel they will continue to live in the middle until there is a real overhaul in this organization.

4 to 5 years is about peak in any position other than QB. You have the experience of about 50-70 games and are still at your athletic high point. Plus statistically how many players play 10 years without a season ending injury. So there is a better than good chance you will lose one of those 30 million dollar seasons almost completely.

But you gotta factor in that next year Ben's contract is off the cap so you negotiate with your future cap in mind. It isn't irresponsible but the contrary, it's smart finances given your known availability in present and future. Watt is still getting the contract no matter how you slice it so you work out the way that better fits you, thus using next year's cap

Most would hold the Steelers as a model of how to run things not call it a problem. Most teams don’t compete almost every year they have wild pendulum swings. We are almost always in the hunt with a chance to win it all. How many teams have done better since the merger? It isn’t easy to win. Unless you cheat.

so to be clear next year is the throw away season. Cause I thought it should have been this one. Then they would be one year closer to where I'd want them to be.

Since the merger? Seriously Lebanon. You honestly think the way Art 2, Tomlin and Colbert are currently doing business remotley resembles the way Dan, Cowher and Donahoe/Colbert did it? I won't even bring up the Noll era cause that was a different NFL.
They have been doing this patch it up deal with every problem with getting better players in the offseason bullshit for most of the last 10 years. What has it got them?

For what really? It takes a minimum of 3 playoff wins to win a championship. They have three playoff wins since 2010. I understand that many of you enjoy the facade of contention. Hell once it starts so do I. But step back a bit and let's get real. If and I mean if they get extremely lucky health wise and the line plays even ok. They are wildcard contenders. Even maybe division winner contenders. But that is a huge stretch in my opinion. This team is not a championship contender. Not really close actually.

I respectfully disagree. It only takes a play or two to totally change this narrative. The refs call a TD instead of going to the ground, Bud doesn't go down, or Bush. Randy Fichtner gets hit by a car.

Maybe if Dan, Cowher and Donahoe would have gone out and got that player or two, they could have gotten that one for the thumb earlier. I always felt those teams in the 90s were just a player or so away. I also remember the gnashing of teeth that the Steelers didn't do those things in those days.
