Time To Temper Expectations On Haskins

We will hardly get to see him in the preseason. Tomlin plays the #2 for 3.5 Quarters and gives the #3 man garbage time. How many years did we have to watch Landry Jones all of the preseason and hardly ever get to see the #3 or #4 play at all? First two games needs to be equal playing time for all positions to properly evaluate personnel. Tomlin goes into the pre-season games with a pre-determined depth chart and seemingly waivers from it regardless of the pre-season results.
Since they're implementing a whole new offense and offensive line, Tomlin's way of doing things may actually be the best for this year. If you have Rudolph as your number two, he should get a lot of work in the offense. Ben should also see a couple more quarters of action (won't happen). Dobbs and Haskins should battle it out to see what they can do against the shoe salesmen until/unless one of them shows that they are intriguing enough to warrant nibbling away at Rudolph's time.

On top of needing to have Rudolph ready, they need to have him ready to start next year because that's what it looks like next year (ugh). Haskins will have a chance against the scrubs in the preseason, but I really think he'll have to outshine Dobbs because Dobbs brings a lot to the table on the sidelines as a third stringer that Haskins would not bring. Also, if Haskins has any future with the team, he really should be beating out Rudolph for the backup job THIS year already.

There are no expectations, that is why this is a great move...Many of us have lamented that the Steelers don't do reclamation projects very often. Here we finally got one and this FORUM seems to wanna tear him down as is the new Internet normal...

This is ALL about development. A 24 year old kid, who has a ton of upside & big arm skills. Go back and read his scouting report, he is the perfect developmental candidate..

Give the kid a chance

****, he's a Buckeye, I'm not tearing him apart. I'm not jumping for joy and proclaiming him the savior/heir either. While I would LOVE to see him succeed as a Steeler, I'm trying really hard to maintain as impartial an outlook as possible. Haskins needs time to develop. He needs to grow up and mature mentally - which is all on him. But, he needs guidance as far as developing as a pro. Working in his favor is that the Steelers have a bonafide QB coach AND Ben seems have taken a liking to him. With his skillset (and quite frankly baggage), there's no better veteran QB he could learn from.

He'll have this year to show improvement. It better be massive if he wants a shot at unseating Rudolph next year. Best case scenario is that he shows that improvement and the Steelers don't have to use a high pick on a QB next year. Worse case scenario is he flames out and it costs the Steelers .... nothing.

Haskins was injured at the combine - thus his slow 40-time

all I've read sums up that he has the arm strength, throwing motion and physical ability to be an true #1 QB.

though from what we saw in Washington, he WAS very immature and naive and immature and naive. So he'll need to grow up, listen to his coaches, work on what he's told needs work, accept criticism and involve that in his training. I WANT to believe he's learned from being cut by the Skins, but will not get excited about having him on roster until he proves he can match his 1st round talent.

Dobbs will be 3rd QB. The frustrating thing is Dobbs shows lots of improvement, then when called on, reverts back to how he always was and has been. Super smart, yes, but not a starting caliber QB in the NFL.

Question: if steelers stash him on practice squad till next year. Another team may sign him. He would be silly to leave though right?

Question: what bear is best?

Never silly to go from a practice squad to a roster. He might be an injury away from playing.

To early to tell, see how much he improves and completes TC. The story will unfold on it's own and we can all hope for a happy ending.

Haskins is the new #3 and Dobbs gets traded or moved to PS.

That's a lot of humble pie in haskins plate, getting cut after being a 1st rounder. Hope he ate it and learns from it

Tempering expectations? What is this the steelersdepot ?

If that is the anology then Haskins at #3 because Dobbs trade / PS, Haskins may get high-jacked to another team if left on PS.

haskins is not a runner at all. Dude is slow and not very athletic. He barely ran at OSU despite that system hinging on a running QB.

I didn't think he was that good in college. OSU was loaded with talent. I mean his #3 WR was Terry McLauren. Just about any QB would have put up good numbers on that team.

My problem with him is that he's not a natural passer. He's a thrower. Lots of QBs with big arms have that problem. He doesn't have much touch. He''l look great on the arms strength throws like digs or deep outs where he can put it on a line but he'll struggle on touch throws like fades or corners or throws into a window where he needs to throw over a LB but under a DB.

The good news is Canada's system tries to make the throws well defined and on time. Lots of throws where he can see the throw. He could be good on deep balls as well but i don;t remember how he did on those in college. WHen you have a WR open by 10 yards it's hard to **** that up.

All of that is still meaningless if he's still just a ********.

you can still have 2 guys on the PS this year with unlimited experience so Dobbs can be placed on the PS if he loses the job for #2/3. We can even pay him at/near a full salary if we want that insurance he won't leave for elsewhere.
