Steelers to Promote Matt Canada as New OC

Told yinz.
He was very good at Pitt. I think it will be an improvement.

If the up tempo offense is scoring consistently, that's one thing. But if it is 3 and outs, look out.

It’s a typical lazy hire. Don’t have to interview anyone and nothing will really change. I expect something similar for OL coach and TE. This organization has become complacent and just lazy.. winning is not the top priority.

Up tempo can still be TOP controlled with a capable running game. Their mission if they choose to accept it Ethan is to get some run capable O-linemen. It is mission difficult but not mission impossible with Colbert aboard.

If they liked what they saw in Canada it isn't a lazy hire. Obviously there was outside interest as well.

Not according to 93.7 The Fan today. They're predicting Todd Haley-style fireworks.

I think this accomplishes a few things...
1) Ben comes back. As does Tomlin and Colbert. It’s a change, but not wholesale changes so it’s uncomfortable for Ben in his swan song year.
2) The Steelers don’t RIP the band-aid off. They’re starting to pull it off slowly and will finish next off-season. I believe this coming season is both Ben and Colbert’s last season with the Steelers.
3) IF I’m correct in the above two, and we have a garbage season because of the cap hell we’re in, loss of our FAs, and no way to improve ( which is likely ), this could also hopefully be Tomlin’s last season as well. The band-aid is gone, wholesale changes, but we have a better cap situation for the new regime to walk into.

IF it gets rid of Tomlin, I’m on board for this scenario. I wanted him gone years ago, but we know it’s not The Rooney way. This allows for the “non-renewal of contract” methodology of The Steelers. It also allows for Ben, Tomlin, and Colbert to walk out together holding hands bringing the end to that chapter of Steelers history. Storybook ending.

But IF Ben and Colbert go and Tomlin stays in that scenario, I’ll lose my remaining ounce of sanity.

I've never understood this desire for up tempo so much. This defense, since the days of Cowher, have depended upon a ball control offense to keep it off the field. When it is on the field, it can then consistently make the explosive plays. This defense cannot play tired. It won't work.

Can't have it both ways. And I'm not saying that you personally want it both ways. Some posters feel our best Offense has been Ben running the muddle/no huddle, up tempo offense. Hard to disagree with them based off of what we saw this season. So, that gives your Offense the best chance to win .... Buuuut, your Defense might get tired out "IF" they don't start holding teams to more three and outs. So, the emphasis needs to be on the Defense getting off the field by either turnover or downs.

Clevelands first drive was 3 plays for 50 yards and a td, Colts jumped all over our defense in the 1st half long before they were tired, Buffalo came out after halftime and went right down the field for 6. Our defense does what it does under Tomlin, if doesn't work he has no adjustments

Just going off what was reported as far as Tomlin goes. If it would have been Butler calling that playoff game I would be calling for Tomlin to take the reigns. I agree with Canada assessment and liked the report about the second half of the regular season finale. Guy looks to have potential.

Yeah that’s the thing, this year you couldn’t get the kind of questions answered because of limited access to players coaches during the week. No best writers had access to after practice or locker room interviews. Q&A sessions from several beat writers, Lolley, DK, Dulac Bouchette have all inferred that both coordinators call the plays, but Tomlin can override any play call (mostly defense of course). Which is just like what Cowher did.

I really feel Ben was given the decision on the play called at the LOS, he audibled a tremendous amount this year. Randy’s play calling the way it was described after the Indy game was give Ben several options on the headset, and he choose which play after reading the defense formation. The predominant reason why the play clock is always at 01-03 before the snap every frigging play. That destroys a cadence snap, that Rodgers, Brees use so effectively.

I know that. I was speaking globally...

I am not at all shocked by this and it tells me Ben will be back. It is why they brought him in last year to build a relationship with Ben to ensure a smooth transition.

Such a smooth transition that they all but ditched Canada's principles that he infused into the offense as the season progressed.

Sigh, did they even bother to assemble a list of candidates? He might be great, but from the outside it doesn't even seem like they bothered to do a search, much less interview anyone.

Almost all of Tomlins hires are from within, cant have anyone with new ideas to challenge or show up cool shades, whose coaching tree is pretty damn bear for someone whose been a head coach this long. Let's hope Canada came with the knowledge he needs, doubt he learned anything from Tomlin and Fitchner, let's hope it's not a reheated version on Fitchners offense

Canada already has a well established offensive philosophy. It's all based on motion and shifts. Not sure if that's going to fool NFL defenses like it could in college.

I'd rather an old school OC that has good run concepts and then schemes plays up off of the run.
We need someone that can design and scheme the WRs open.. you watch these other offenses and guys are wide open a lot of times.
Canada's offense might fool ****** college defenses, I don't see it working in the pros.

I preferred an offensive coordinator with head coaching experience or a Reid/McVay/Shanahan disciple because those guys know how to design an offense.

How did the offense look the first half of the season? (rhetorical question)

Answer: competent

As Ike astutely pointed out, Canada's fingerprints were all over it with all the motion, decoys, jet sweeps etc. How it all fell off of a cliff is beyond my understanding, but I think he's going to be at least a sizeable improvement over Fichtner. When my dad, with his limited football knowledge, was predicting play-calls on offense before it was even run second half of season, I knew it was bad.

And let's give the guy a chance.

Worth, I agree with your post , mostly. I dont know how or where everyone can say,, "That was canada" "The second half was fichtner".

Thats my issue. The Canada hire signals status quo,,, ben staying etc.

IF this is all indeed the case. Some draft picks and free agents on Offense could make a big difference.. IF . The first half the season was Canada.

Big F'n If.

I love ben but just dont want to see the Steelers kicking the can down the road like they did after SB 43. They tried to hang on then too.

I’m mixed on Canada with Ben. Not sure if this is a good pairing. Oh well.

I’m trying to remember any remarkable team that Matt Canada was on the coaching staff. Aside from the win over Clemson in 2016, nothing really springs to mind.

In 2016, he was Pitt's OC when they averaged 42 points a game, led college football in red-zone TD percentage and scored at least 28 points in all their games (per Dave Bryan at the Depot). Pitt hasn't seen that kind of rarefied air since he left.

That Pitt offense was also loaded with NFL level talent.

That's great but for one, it was against ACC defenses and secondary, this team needs to show some kind of running attack. I think Canada's offense is just going to be slinging the ball around again.. this team cannot be one dimensional anymore.

Except for the 24 they put up in a loss to Northwestern. That said, since 2011, he has never stayed anywhere outside of NC State fir more than a year, and I don’t think it is because he’s so awesome.
