Steelers to Promote Matt Canada as New OC

That's great but for one, it was against ACC defenses and secondary, this team needs to show some kind of running attack. I think Canada's offense is just going to be slinging the ball around again.. this team cannot be one dimensional anymore.

On that 2016 Pitt team, Conner had 216 rushing attempts for 1092 yds, Peterman rushed 72 times for 286 yards (won't see that from Ben and wouldn't want to), Henderrson 60 for 631, Moss 42 for 227, Hall 36 for 160 and Ollison 33 for 127. So, there seems to be a running component to his college offense. I'll just hope that he brings a similar approach to his NFL offense.

Maybe he's an *******.

Maybe they need an ******* to light a fire already. I love Big Ben but he needs a fire lit as well, not some chummy pal.

Like- parking his car in handicapped spaces type *******?

Yep, that kind of *******. But, Ben has had some of his best years under coaches who he might characterize as ********. So, there's that

I wonder if Matt was behind running the shortage yardage pass plays ..lol

Good info.. Well I hope he proves me wrong. It's tough to say right now.

Like has been mentioned ad nauseum, the first half of the season they ran the ball competently. I refuse to believe that David DeCastro, Maurkice Pouncey etc. just forgot how to run-block. I'm really encouraged with Dotson as well. Feiler needs to just go back to RT IMO.

Oh, I'm not questioning whether the Steelers ran the ball effectively at the beginning of the season. And I don't believe Pouncey/DeCastro forgot how to run block. Although I do believe that Pouncey has aged and isn't as good at it as he was and that DeCastro was playing injured this season. I think they'll let Feiler walk in free agency. Dotson starts next year and they resign Banner to be the RT.

In any event, I believe you may have misunderstood/misread my post. I wasn't talking about the PITTsburgh Steelers. I was citing information from Canada's year as OC at The University of PITTsburgh. I I was sharing some information I looked up in hopes that what I found might shed some light on whether or not we might expect the run game to be part of the offense Canada will use as the Steelers OC.

The running problems later in the season was a direct result of the short passing plays the Steelers were running. Wasn't a problem early in the season as teams were not sure what to expect. Once teams caught on the Steelers didn't like throwing downfield. They were bringing more guys up closer to the line and closer to the box. If there was no quick pass and its a run. Once you get past the line there are more defenders waiting right there stopping any kind of bigger runs.

This also led to leading the league in tipped balls, turnovers because of tips. It kills the running game because the box is stacked full of defenders. Once the Steelers near the end of the season started going deeper. The runs were getting better. The defense now wasn't sure what to expect and started backing off. Short passing plays they run 95% of the time was doing a lot of damage in all kinds of areas. We do still need to find a good back and some work on the line needs to be done.

PS: The defense was getting worn down from having to play too much because the offense couldn't get any kind of momentum going. I wonder if there is a stat on how many minutes the defense or offense is on the filed per game or the total for the season. A comparison to other teams would be interesting.

Except for the 24 they put up in a loss to Northwestern. That said, since 2011, he has never stayed anywhere outside of NC State fir more than a year, and I don’t think it is because he’s so awesome.

I watched Pitt getting off the bus that game and they didn't look like they wanted to be there and Northwestern was acting like it was their Super Bowl. Peterman and Conner also left the game with injuries.

I actually wasn't responding to your post Buckeye. I agree with you 100%.

As long as Tomlin is here this is just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

The thing I like about Canada is his offense is a modern offensive coordinator and not a retread. The thing I’m not sure of is how he will mesh with Ben. I understand Canada can be stubborn and so can Ben. Rudolph would do better under Canada IMO. McFarland will see a lot more action as RB.

Nothing really changes until they finally and mercifully do not renew Tomlin's contract after 2021. Tomlin is an average coach who despite a wealth of talent over his coaching career in Pittsburgh, has never lived up up to this bullshit mantra of being great coach. He's had a franchise QB since he arrived, a generational RB and WR, a rebuilt OL with a couple No. ones and pro bowlers, A pretty good TE in Heath Miller for a time, a decent one in Jesse James, a couple decent, not great but good enough in Ebron and Vance. The defense has been rebuilt and was good enough to win over the last few years but it always goes back to the same old crap. Team not prepared, Team not ready (see Cam Heyward's comments), Tomlin saying he wasn't hired to manage the clock, Tomlin saying we don't make many adjustments, we give the players the gameplay and they execute, Tomlin not allowing Butler to run the defense, Tomlin's lack of discipline, Tomlin's poor challenges, Tomlin's poor decision making of living in his fears, the list goes on and on. What does he do well??? Oh yeah, never had a losing season. Ya know what guys, if that's your thing and you can live with that fine, but not me any longer. I want more. I see the Patriots who dominated for years being replaced by teams like the Chiefs, Bills, even the up and coming Dolphins, Browns and Rats but the Steelers just muddling along cocky and arrogant and unwilling to make necessary changes because that's not what we do. Its so time to move on and go in a different direction with the head coach. And this needs to be Ben's last year period. He's old, slow and cannot consistently make the plays he once was able to make. Bring him back for a final swan song but that's it then start rebuilding and cutting the dead wood. I don't expect much next year and will not let expectations dictate otherwise. The team and organization has been passed up by the teams I've mentioned. Steelers need some down years so they can draft higher getting impact players.

Its hilarious Ben is already getting killed for this and we haven't even run a single play. Ben won't listen, Ben is to stubborn, Ben had to have an in-house guy.

I don't have an issue with Ben working with Canada whatsoever. I'm just saying one last year and let's be done with Ben. I like what Canada may be able to do with this offense but you have to help Ben out with shoring up this OL as much as possible and bringing in a big, powerful back and get back the running game. If you rely on your then to be 39 year old QB slinging it 45 and 50 tines a game, then you've got problems once again. Ben is not the guy who could shed tacklers and extend plays and even run from the pocket any longer. Those days are over and now you basically have a statue back there who is a sitting duck. So help him out with better protection when he does throw, a running game and I mean a real ******* commitment to the running game and not this bullshit Tomlin throws out there every week, and please reduce the number of throws each game. I think Canada will do that if Tomlin allows it but they have to shore up that line and draft a legitimate RB and for the love of God use Derrick Watt as a FB.

Whether Ben is QB or a guy like Mahomes, the oline needs fixed.

Sorry if it sounds like I’m sounding negative. To me- doesn’t seem like the right pairing/style. Hey, it could work. Onto the OL, Wondering if they could bring Doug Marrone. Not of who else is out there for OL coach

Thats exactly what I said if you read my entire post. I said you have to help Ben by shoring up the OL and bringing on a power back. He can't carry this team like he once did. When they went to the SB after 2010 season they had a crappy OL but Ben was a lot younger then and could escape the pocket and extend plays. He simply cannot do that any longer at almost 39. Help him out in 2021 and utilize his experience and compliment him with better protection and a legitimate running game not this ridiculous short passing game. And I'll add, bring in a reliable target at TE like a Zac Ertz, someone to act as his security blanket when coverage breaks down. I'm not sold on Ebron and Vance. They are adequate but too much inconsistency for me.

After reading your post I checked out his resume and you are right about him moving around a lot. Maybe being the OC in the big leagues will keep him around. Has Ben said what he thinks about him one way or the other ?

Not you, local guys on the radio.

I just saw the Seahawks are looking at Gase and possibly Kafka for OC. Interesting to watch their approach versus the Steelers given both teams had QBs not play as well at the end of the season, lose at home in the first round, and want a bigger emphasis on the running game.
