The Coronavirus thread

You know damn well OFTB wasn't arguing that Covid-19 is just like the flu, but you seem incapable of any intellectual honesty.
I just asked her a simple question. It wasn't rude, or disrespectful. It had to do with a specific post where she downplayed the findings of a case study showing Covid spreading to other organs. I would have liked to hear her opinion on this. Until you rudely butted in, of course.

Why can't you refute people's arguments with either concessions or legitimate rebuttals, instead of going straight to smart ***, grade school level type of deflection & bullshit?

Just reading the room, that's all. Seems like 'smart ***, grade school level type bullshit' is the way to go around here. Just doing my best to fit in.

Or perhaps I should listen to a Hungarian with TDS
Tibs may now suddenly have an all-day meeting that needs his attention. *signing off*

You know, your ceaseless infatuation with me is reaching an all-time high. There's hardly a post on this board, on any subject, where you don't casually drop my name. Why is that?

Wait, I thought TSF and Confluence were obsessed with calling out your lies. Then me. Now Steelworth?

Maybe, just maybe, Tibs the problem is not other people.

Unless you have something of merit to add to this thread.

From Amy Schumer's uncle to your eyes, the message is clear...

Says the guy posting....
misleading bullshit medical articles from People magazine ...
that use a 100 person sample study....
to lie to the world saying 75% of us will end up with severe life-long heart problems because of COVID...
while the article intentionally DOES NOT share that this ailment is NOT exclusive to COVID and is found in other respiratory viral outbreaks.

God I love each time you step in it.

Yup, Tibs is definitely the problem. Will look into finding a resolution to that.

Shhhhhhh. Tibs thinks he's important. Don't want to melt the snowflake, do we? Well, yes. Yes we do. Loser Hungarian. Here's yet another slice through the air, low and slow...

Treatment with Hydroxychloroquine Cut Death Rate Significantly in COVID-19 Patients, Henry Ford Health System Study Shows
July 02, 2020

DETROIT – Treatment with hydroxychloroquine cut the death rate significantly in sick patients hospitalized with COVID-19 – and without heart-related side-effects, according to a new study published by Henry Ford Health System.

So you're arguing that covid is no more dangerous than an average flu. Did I get that right?

No.

It's looking like the fatality rate is higher. Maybe 50% higher or even double, but still quite low.

The biggest problem with covid is how transmissible it is, and also how much asymptomatic transmission there is. Is covid in any one individual more dangerous than the flu? It's hard to tell because the flu doesn't spread as fast thus any related complications would not happen as frequently. That's a bad thing, no doubt, especially for overwhelming hospitals and supply chains.

But when well known complications of other viral illnesses such as myocarditis and kawasaki like syndrome are reported in the media as something new and mysterious, that does give me pause. Why not be honest about it? There seems to be a concerted effort to portray this virus as something way worse than anything we've ever seen. And in its transmissibilty that is probably true. But in its severity it probably is not. The vast majority of us do not need to live in terror of getting this illness. There will be exceptions to that, just like there are with every other viral illness.

Did you just...WTF...ya...you did.

You insinuate HCQ was presented as a CURE and that social media pulled the data because people may "disregard preventative measures" - thus comparing the use of HCQ to preventative measures...when HCQ is not a preventative measure, while a mask is....

No! Preventable measures like social distancing and wearing a mask. Morons, that haven’t already disregarded these measures, might decide to do so if they’re mislead into thinking there is a cure. If a “doctor” publicly suggests people inject disinfectants to fight COVID, I’m sure social media outlets will pull that as well.

Man, are you wound right!

Thanks OFTB, you make very good points, as usual. As far as the case study I cited about this not being 'just' a respiratory illness, I want to explain what caught my eye about that.

It struck me early on, back in March or so, as hospitals were inundated in the Lombardy region of Italy, how doctors were describing the symptoms of those severely stricken with covid. There was a lot of data of deaths being caused by the lungs filling with fluid, hence the need for ventilators. But even then, I had read multiple reports that the covid was spreading to other organs, and causing damage to the liver and the heart, in addition to the pneumonia-like symptoms in the lungs.

Since then, I've read about possible long-term affects it may have on the heart and lungs, many months after fully recovering from even a mild cases of covid. The idea that it lingers in the body, for whatever length of time, is not reassuring. And the fact this thing has only been around for what 6-7 months, there's no way yet to measure the long-term impact it may have.

These are all elements of covid why I wince reading page after page how this really isn't that bad, that it's just like the flu, etc. I am in no way being an alarmist, just would like to dive in a bit deeper on what we're dealing with here, to try to understand it better. Thanks again for your input.

riddle me this, Flog.

You're of the mindset that masks will prevent the transmission of Rona from one person to another. As we have seen in numerous videos, masks DO prevent the forward transmission of Rona. We can all agree on that, as the mask deflects expulsion forward and redirects it backwards or to the side. Agree? Work with me here. Of course you agree. It's proven science.

We also know that the masks do not prevent the particles from going INTO the mask.Correct? That's been proven and hammered away here. "You don't wear a mask for yourself. You wear a mask for everyone else." Right? Of course you agree.

So, all that taken into account, look at this picture from the Minneapolis riot:

5ed196743ad8614afa77c444

what do you see? People wearing masks. Yay! So does everyone else!

what else do you see? very little social distancing. I mean, sure you have people on the far right of the pic with distance between themselves, but the majority are pretty much shoulder to shoulder. Hard to disagree with that, right?

In review, masks prevent the FORWARD expulsion of water droplets via talking, shouting, yelling, protesting, coughing and sneezing. The masks deflect that to the sides and behind.

so when you see those people in the pic above, is it not acceptable to believe that those people could very well be spreading Rona while also wearing masks? You know, since masks deflect water droplets to the back and side, but do not prevent incoming water droplets.

Back, and to the left.

I honestly don't even know what we are debating anymore.

It jumps from the legitimacy of that Cameroon Doctor and her message about HCQ, to whether is was right/wrong for Facebook to flag/remove it, to whether Covid is more/less that a bad flu, to whether masks and social distancing should be done/enforced.

I can't keep it all straight anymore.

I with this wasn't a left-right issue. It shouldn't be. I think it makes sense to wear masks and social distance. I am not 100% sold that HCQ, antibiotics and zinc are some magic potion that will save millions. But then again, if you and your doctor decide it is right for you, go ahead and go through a treatment of that if you get Covid. I personally think it is a lot worse than influenza. And we don't have a clear handle on lasting or long term effects after recovery. We just don't know and to ASSUME it is just like influenza in this regard seems pretty stupid.

I don't think restaurants and bars should be open. I don't like the idea of amusement parks or movie theaters either.

I don't even know what about schools yet. I was pretty sure school in fall would be open, but this "second wave" is going to scare a lot of parents (and rightfully so). Just look how quickly it infected so many Florida Marlins in about a week. I mean, there is no way we can expect our kids to behave better than adults and a classroom (especially elementary/middle school age) is just as gross as a locker room. It is just totally realistic to expect if one kid brings it to class, it could easily be 15 kids in ONE WEEK. And that happened even with the bottomless money and scrutiny of MLB and media watching EVERY SECOND of their re-start.

My daughter has a congenital heart defect. The studies that show possible heart damage is scary for me and my wife. She looks normal, she acts normal, she doesn't take any medication or have any restrictions because of her heart. But her heart is NOT NORMAL. And you clearly hear it. It sounds completely different than my heart.

We can't let her go back to school. I just can't logically make that decision. Makes no sense.

This is DIFFERENT than the flu. Ever since she was born, the doctors said every one in our house should get flu vaccines every year and we do. Every year. They tell us to be somewhat extra careful. I mean, we don't do much different than the normal family but it's in the back of our mind sometimes.

I work every day. I am out in the world every day. Our office has only 12-15 people in it and I only SEE about half that during the day. I don't really let anyone come into my office. They can talk to me from the hallway. I don't wear a mask at work but we've had zero positive cases in pretty much the entire offices' "circle" of people (employees and family members). At least so far. Delaware has done pretty well overall. Yes, it hit our nursing homes pretty hard (just like everywhere in the northeast). And yes, we got a bit of a "surge" in Sussex County when they re-opened some of the beach towns Memorial Day weekend.

Every time I leave my car to go into a store, I wear a mask. It's easy and I expect EVERYONE ELSE I SEE IN THAT STORE TO BE DOING THE SAME THING. In Delaware it's pretty much mandatory. I have never eaten in a restaurant once the pandemic started in March.

When there was the "good news" in June, we went to our family beach trailer in New Jersey beaches. We stayed in the trailer pretty much all the time except going to the Stone Harbor public beaches. Keeping our distance from people and staying outside. We swam in the ocean. We went out ONCE for dinner on an "open porch" type of setup. We were upwind from other people.

I have been to TWO friends houses since the pandemic started. Our kids are friends so it was social gathering of only two families at a time. Almost exclusively outside. My son has visited/hung out with only three of his friends. My daughter has hung out/visited with only two of her friends (one lives across the street in our neighborhood).

I mean, it's a pain in the *** to do all this. I wish I could go to a bar for a "guys night out". We did a few on-line get togethers. One time we met (four of us) at someone's back porch and drank beers around a fire until 11:00PM.

I have only seen family once. I visited my Dad and his new wife at his house in central Pennsylvania over July 4th. Only for the day. My sister and her family were there (10 total). There were (at that time) no cases in the town my dad lives in.

That's it. I just think we all need to take it easy for a while. Only do what is absolutely necessary. Yes, we have to slowly open the economy and work. But if you in the service industry, I'm sorry, you're stuck. It is just stupid to go "out" when you don't have to. I fully support, that if you have steady income, buy as much as you can local. Order out food as often as you want. Buy stuff for your garden. Do home projects. Anything to spend money (reasonably) to keep the economy going.

I'd prefer a reply to your assertion that I don't wear masks. I'm still wondering where you got that idea from.

Man, are you wound right!

Can you point me to an article where someone says Hydroxychloroquine is a cure? All I've seen are articles and reports saying it has been shown to be effective in treating Rona depending on when it was administered and how and with what other drugs like Zpacks.

I'm also curious why you cheer social media outlets pulling articles about the potential effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine, while simultaneously having no objection to those same sites sharing highly misleading stats, theories like kids will transmit Rona to teachers if we re-open schools, sites that laud the effectiveness of Cuomo putting COVID patients into nursing homes, sites that laud Cuoma as an effective leader in the battle against Rona while the same sites show Desantis in Florida is a disaster at managing Rona, while having no problems with these sites promoting people join massive public protests for racial equality while demonizing those who would attend church.

Curious indeed.

It would seem you have a selective, political-based view on what information they should and should not share.

If you can’t make your point in a 100 words or less... you’re like Tim.

To answer your riddle, it’s not exactly yelling in people’s faces in a crowded bar, but yes, they could be spreading COVID.
