By G.Stryker SteelerNation.com   Let’s face it, Steeler Nation. The Super Bowl window is closing on this team — mainly because Ben Roethlisberger is nearing the end of his career. Ben is working his tail off to get ready to play this season after undergoing season-ending elbow surgery last year. With two years left on […]

AS long as our coaches continue the same game plans and same sets this team will be going to rebuild mode when Ben leaves.

I agree. I realize this is a fan site and don't have a problem with the initial post. I just do not think there are moves they can make to win a SB with this coaching staff and this roster with no first round pick and no FA Cap room. And before anyone ***** themselves about Minkah, he certainly was worth the trade. I just don't think they will be significantly better next year. Playoffs sure. More than one and done in the playoffs, maybe. SB. No way.

I still prefer a vet QB brought in. Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. I saw nothing from the backups to bring me confidence. I can't argue with your keeps and let go-s. Ben is going to be back, but will he hold up the whole season? If the Steelers are taking a wait and see approach with him (Colbert alluded to that) then they shouldn't be taking a wait and see approach with Rudolph. Let us not be caught with the hand in the cookie jar again.

One single reason why the Steelers will be better this year. Big Ben will be back at QB.

Yeah, but for how long? Nobody knows what his elbow is gonna do once he heats it up. Could last the season, could last one series. If he was younger, I would be far more optimistic, but I hope you’re right.

Nice article, how much will the 2nd round tender for RFA Hilton cost?

Where's the money for that? If you get a good backup forget about Dupree or another decent to good OLB. We are in win mode now with Ben, all the investments should be to complete a roster around your HoF QB, spending at least 10M of cap space in a decent QB backup will strain the roster in maybe the last rodeo of Big Ben

load depth on the OL retain bud, bring in competition for Edmunds and a #4 wr and 5 and by the time training camp is rolling on one of these vets maybe could be had for next to nothing
foles ( would likely want to go to contender is being reported jags may trade or cut him, which so much after 1 year left on his deal them getting a 6th in back to reataining his salary is the best)
Mariota
Keanum
Flacco

I from the fa list see fitz, dalton, bridge assured to get a short term gig to 2-3 years behind a raw rookie like herbert who may need a year to folish up things, burrows will fight via growing pains like the lousy ol and always coming from behind.

Nice write up "G" and thanks for the insight.

I hope if BUD is tagged they use the NON-exclusive tag (I think that's the right one) and can actually get something out of him if it's determined he is gone. I want him to stay but don't want to give up the future "CAP" bankruptcy to achieve that.

As for Canaday, I'm absolutely on board but bring in respectful competition with an open mind.

Hilton needs to be on the roster when all is said and done.

We can't play the "WHAT IF's" and go all in on Ben ROETHLISBERGER with the tools he needed. I know it is nearly the same coaching staff and I disagree with not making the OC & ST changes. THIS coaching staff needs a STEP UP season regardless of who is healthy / retained / drafted / brought in on FAs, are they capable of doing the step up?

Lets get our idioms in order here!! "Caught with your hand in the cookie jar" means to be caught stealing something.

"Getting caught with your pants down" ...unprepared for a situation or an event...is the appropriate idiom here.lol

It takes an idiom to know an idiom

Same place the money was for the plethora of their own free agents they signed the one year, the same place the money was for Nelson,Barron and MonGrief last year.

Just not getting why people think that money can't be freed up. It isn't like I am asking for top ten free agents either.

So all in on Ben but sacrifice the playoffs in the process?

Don't get me wrong I get then train of thought.

I also get the Steelers missed the last two playoffs, I am hoping this isn't a repeat of those two failures. Grabbing a vet could safe guard in light of Ben going down.

Plenty of teams have won it all with QBs that were less than desirable,

But the dynamic backup duo was mostly responsible for sitting at home for the playoffs.

Something has to give at the position..............

Yes they stole our playoff hopes and dreams right out from under us, because they failed to fortify the position.

:bump2:

I know his age is a real factor, but with likely some of the best people in the world involved in his surgery and rehabilitation and Ben's natural superhuman strength, I wouldn't be surprised if what Colbert said the other day "we might see an even better Ben R." becomes true. But that is the optimistic homer in me.

Man we all hope so, I just don't know if we should take stock in it.

Yeah, I put a little caveat in there after reading my homeristic (word?) post.

The year Bus won it all I had little faith and they proved me wrong.

I would love love them to prove me wrong this year,

Cmon birthday boyBigBen bring us a stairway to 7!

Just under $3M. For a sub package starter and a starting RT/LG in Feiler, you have to find a way to make those numbers work.

Spot on DIC. I agree the Tag has to be non-exclusive. Either resign Bud, use him as a rental this season, or turn his trade into some serious draft capital.

Here's a thought to free up space. Let BJ and Foster walk, move Feiler to LG and promote Chuckes to RT. I retain Banner either way.

I will also say, I see a scenario where the Steelers keep Foster for one more year to keep consistency in that line, but I think that is a mistake. Foster's at the end. BJ and Feiler are just starting to come up. I personally keep the players on the rise, and dump the vet in this case.

Lastly, there is ZERO money for a vet QB. I'd love to have one too, but that is not a SB winning move. You can't tie up any more money in the QB to fail to address other needs on D/OL/TE. Plus I already like Rudolph's development. First season went 5-3, and showed he can make all the throws. I expect improvement this year as well, and if that's the case, he'll be a better option this year if Ben misses time.

Nelson, Barron, moncrief and even Haden's extension came from ABs. There's no AB getting cut or traded this off-season opening that much cap space.

They can still free up money by tweaking contracts. **** tweak Ben's again for a year....

Yes they can but I'm already counting on it to keep their own RFAs and FAs, plus bringing some help at NT

I think they are seriously cap strapped and won't be able to bring a vet QB, not because I think you are wrong but because they can't. Also I think they think Rudolph is a good backup in the making.

We don't have to agree with them but is what I think they are thinking and how limited they are regarding the cap

Thanks Cope.!

I get where slash is coming from but I'd like to add something..... If RUDOLF isn't good enough by 1/2 through training camp,..... Our coaches had better DANG well know it. At that time if possible, I bring in a vet but also CUT rednose simultainiuously because he has had plenty of time to shine and if he isn't by then then we need better coaching / scouting / signing(s).! I don't want a Lamar Jackson but ****, a lot of these draftees are showing their poise 2nd year and our's could barely take a snap but also OC had no confidence in him as well (or just plain ****** OC, your choice).

BOTTOM LINE is I can see both sides one shoe at a time but my biggest hope is the QB back-up shoes get filled adequately!!!!
