Coach Cowher to the hall! Was just surprised w/ it on TV

Congrats Bill Cowher

This could be a very large black and gold group headed to the hall of fame.

Bill Cowher
Troy Polamalu ....should be our next first ballot selection
Donnie Shell.......waiting far too long for a guy with the numbers, Superbowls and probowls on his resume
Alan Faneca....... he does have the greatest accolades of any of the other members of the finalists .............. but could get left in the cold again this year

Sure. I’m happy for Cow-her. But what are the criteria for a coach. I contend that being an analyst on TV elevates ones chances of getting into the Hall sooner vs later. Kurt Warner, Dungy, et al.

Look,I get that there will always be comparisons. It’s inevitable. To me it’s about respect. The man just made it in the HOF. Let’s make it about him. When CMT gets in,I would show him the same courtesy.

Not gonna lie, when I saw that live on TV it was a little emotional for me as well. Now,on to my favorite coaches moments. When we finally got over that hump for coaches SB win, when he held up the trophy with his late wife and kids on the field,it still brings
tears to my eyes. Incredible day. My other fav was the win against Indy in the playoff run. To me,might have been the greatest coached Steeler game of all time. Nobody gave us a snowballs chance in hell. The great Manning at home against the team that just squeaked in to the playoffs. It was going to be a smoke show. Everyone expected run, run, and more run. Coach opened it up like no other. Pass.pass and more pass. Big Ben was on fire.

That first half was one of the most incredible offensive game plan ever coached. Total domination. We had a 21-3 lead in the 3rd quarter. Then Bill did what he liked to do. With a lead he got a little conservative. He loved to pound that rock. Especially when people knew you would and could. Until Jerome’s fumble,it really was a perfect game, that should have iced it with no time and an extra 7 points. But **** happens. I think that game was probably the wildest, most emotional game in Steelers history for me. When Jerome fumbled, Vanderidiot missed FG,truly heart attack moments. People forget how much of an underdog we were in that game.

Let’s make the thread about him. I mean how many other teams don’t have one coach in the HOF? Congrats Bill! Your favorite moments?

Cowher walked away from the game voluntarily right when the Steelers reached their highest point (of many great teams he coached).

He did it for family.

The San Diego Chargers AFC Championship game was the low point as he knew they had the far better team.

The way they rallied without Woodson after the 3-4 start in 1995 to reach the Super Bowl.

But the 2004 season meant the most to me. It wasn’t one particular game; but it was an extremely difficult time to me in my life that i didn’t know how I’d get through.

Each Sunday the Steelers played & won and it got me through it. They lifted spirits that were the lowest of my life at the time. While the Super Bowl was a year away, by the time that run ended I made it through my tough time.

That is when Sports are most REAL as it really impacted my life.

Well deserved. When It comes to hall of fame coaches, playoff records matter.

Very much like Tony Dungy. Borderline candidate, but very well liked, and visible as a talking head. Very happy for him.

Looking at Tom Flores, and George Siefert, the best decision Cowher made was not to come back with some crappy team. If Cowher comes back with the Browns, he never sniffs the Hall. Even good coaches will fail when put into bad situations.

I don't often agree with you and I know it is probably agenda driven like most of your posts. But I have to agree with playoff records matter.

Tony Dungy and his 9-10 postseason record might have something to say about that. That said, I’ve always felt Cowher should’ve made it in before Dungy, at least strictly from a coaching perspective. Dungy’s teams set the bar for choking, and why you don’t rest players when you have a bye.

I judge a coach by what he did with what he had. Cowher's first 10 years were in 3 Rivers stadium. The Steelers lost FA after FA. Great players like Nickerson, Woodson, Green, Thigpen, Searcy, Evans, Johnson, C. Johnson, Hastings, Chad Brown, and even O'Donnell. Cowher always pulled it together and won. He took O'Donnell to a SB and Kordell Stewart to an AFCC game. He did much more with less than most coaches. He had to fight against the stupidity of Donahoe and the lack of funding from Rooney and he still won. He put players in position to win. He let Ben as a rookie throw 30 times against the Jets even though he had 2 ints. He opened it up and shocked everyone when Ben came out passing against Indy and then did the same thing against Denver the next week.

From his Bio: "Cowher is only the second coach in NFL history to lead his team to the playoffs in each of his first six seasons as head coach, joining Pro Football Hall of Fame member Paul Brown. He is one of only six coaches in NFL history to claim at least seven division titles. At the conclusion of the 2005 season, the Steelers had the best record of any team in the NFL since Cowher was hired as head coach."

I don't remember exactly but weren't the 05' Steelers the first team to win 3 road playoff games and win the SB? I knew teams like the 85' Pats had gotten to the SB but they didn't win it. Cowher was a great coach. He did more with less than the vast majority of NFL coaches. He deserves this.

That was totally cool because I was watching it first hand. Some other inductees finding out are up on you tube. Randy Moss for one. Looked lime he was in a hotel room. But they knock on the door and a crowd that was silent inside erupts inside. Pretty cool!

It was really cool when he realized what was happening. I had to watch it a few times. Congrats to coach Cowher. I love it.

Same here. Coach Cowher is such a genuine guy who wears his emotions on his sleeves that it was just an incredible moment.
