Is it time to be concerned with Edmunds?

There was some debate on draft day that Edmunds was a reach. After nearly two seasons in the books, I think it's safe to say he was.

Edmunds has but one interception in 31 games as a pro ( it was a gimmie ) and has not had an interception in the past 28 games.

This season he has but three passes defended, a remarkably low number for any starting defensive back. In coverage, he has been beaten often. Too slow vs. WR's, not tall enough vs. TE's, which is what I said on draft day. The problem is compounded by below-average instincts and ball awareness. Edmunds boasts an impressive vertical leap ( 41 “ ), he just mistimes his jumps. At this point, it’s safe to say his ball skills suck, and he’s not a good coverage safety.

As a tackler, Edmunds has been a mixed bag. He does lead the team in tackles, I say partly because he's been targeted with his man being open often. He also leads the team in missed tackles. No sacks to brag about. Or forced fumbles.

Surrounded by the talent in the defensive backfield, and beneficiary of a top pass rush, he has been a real disappointment.

Now for some fun. An open question for the board. Who should start next year at safety. Edmunds or Davis? Assuming Davis comes back at 100%, and Edmunds doesn't improve much beyond this point, I'll go with Davis. He doesn't get beaten as often, looks better on the Blitz, and makes just a few more plays on the ball.

Coach, I appreciate the fact you'll likely start a seperate thread for each and every underperforming player on the roster. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I've been seeing the idea being floated around that Edmunds may be best served adding a few pounds and making a move to ILB. That may not be a terrible idea at this point, as he's below the line in coverage, and has shown little to no improvement on that front.

So you are giving Davis a new contract while we are tight against the cap and you have Edmunds already in the books.

There's nothing to discuss, you go with Edmunds and teach him how to cover, sit him in front of a TV with Minkah's tape until he learns to position himself qnd

So he slammed Davis forever and now wants him to replace Edmunds. Looks like the agenda has shifted.

Well, that would depend not he contact amount. If the dollar amount is the same, yes. Edmunds has had two years in the NFL to learn how to cover. He's not fast enough or stifle enough. It is what it is.

Hey now, with Berry playing poor lately, I might put a punter in my mock draft. :) Not likely, but a priority free agent punter, sure

I don't think Edmunds is a sure enough tackler to be an inside linebacker. He would need to add 15-20 pounds. The experiment is not going to happen.

Sure enough tackler? He leads the team in tackles...

Davis is an interesting case. He didn't show a whole lot early in his career and missed the entire season. Would he be willing to come back on a cheap contract and you see what you have with Edmunds and Davis? In the end I think both sides will be ready to move on.

Yeah I thought I remembered that slamming of Davis. Wonder if he still likes Chicky?

I did not like either pick. Said so on draft day and au usual the player I would have taken would have been better.

In this case. Edmunds was a first round pick. David a second round pick. I think Davis, who is by now means godd is the better of the two, Not by a huge margin, but better

On Chickillo I liked the late round pick, and felt he was better than Jarvis Jones. He's a very expensive back up now, who I want to cut. I thought so much of CHikillo, I badly wanted Watt in round one to replace him.

I’ll be honest with you Coach, I was stunned when they drafted Edmunds in the first round. I felt like they could have gotten him in later rounds. Never understood the high draft grade they placed on him.

I had a round three grade on Edmunds. We can't draft DB's. But we do a great job trading for them and getting them in free agency,

Not fast enough? Bullshit. Edmunds tested out with elite measurables. Look at his percentiles compared to other safeties. He ran a 4.47 and look at that vertical leap. Now look at his long arms which is a big advantage for a coverage guy.

Make up other reasons besides being slow for your edmunds victory lap posts.

Ever hear the term he's a straight line guy? Or he doesn't play to his timed speed? I see him trailing too often and not gaining on the play. You tell me why. Jerry Rice never had great timed speed, but he was fast in pads and was seldom caught from behind.

The 40 yard dash can be misleading, a good portion of it is in the start. Edmunds 10 yard split was very good. He's just not a fluid mover at all. I did mention he has a great vertical. But what good is that when you mis time you're jumps?

I can't find data on his cone or shuttle time. My guess if did not do these drills as they would expose a lack of start & stop and turning ability.

One interesting point According to next gen stats James Conner who rand a 4.65 had a top speed of 20 miles per hour. Yes that happened. Edmunds top speed listed at 18.3 miles per hour. Hmmmm.... Or if you prefer Rashaad Penny who had a combine time of 4.46 has a listed top speed, but his top speed was over 20 miles per hour. Clearly a faster top speed than Edmunds. Interesting stuff.

The 40 can be misleading ha ! Coming from the guy who hangs on it during the draft process, I find what you are now saying comical.

You can't find data on his cone drills but you just ******* assume they were terrible because it suits you. Seems about right. BTW you said he wasn't fast enough. I proved you full of **** and you changed your argument. Typical.

Just for fun, try clicking on the Comparisons tab at the bottom of the table. You will see his combine measurables compare closely to Derwin James, Eric Berry, and Keanu Neal. But they probably all have stiff hips too.

If you have to cut out the part of the posts which shows lack of top speed between players, what does that say? I posted a guy with a much slower 40 and a guy a near identical 40. Both players had noticeably higher top speed. Re-read top speed ratings. I think Tape, who's a much better poster and understands football will see my point. I don't think you have the IQ for, and perhaps the honesty as you cut out the part of the post that explains it. Stay angry!

Look at the top speeds. I posted a slower 40 and near identical 40. They have faster top speeds. I could probably find several player with similar or slower 40's in comparison to Edmunds that have a higher top speed. Maybe I was wrong and you won't get it. It's right there in front of your face, and if I had the time I could bury you with data with players who ran slower 40's or the same that had better top speeds.

NO, I do not think he has the football speed or agility to cover WR's. He loses ground in footraces. He is not agile enough to play the slot either. if you watch the games, maybe just maybe you see my point.

And no reply to the cone and shuttle drills. You do know what they measure, correct? Edmunds did run any of them. Why? They are important for DB's.

Not everyone can be elite at every position. Cap doesn't allow it. Edmunds is an in the box safety and not a ball hawk. My largest issue with him is tackling technique. Seems to hit high and doesn't wrap up. That can be fixed with coaching, reps, and desire. He isn't a ball hawk; folks shouldn't expect him to be. Hell, I'd bet Barron is better in coverage than Edmunds.

Biggest issue I see with folks evaluating him is the idea that every first round pick should be a pro bowl player. Funny the numbers will never support that, but some will never grasp that concept. I'd bet if he was a third round pick, many would have less issue with him. My advice, don't value or devalue a rostered player based upon where he was drafted - only by what he does for the team. Drafts are fickle ******* with some years better than others and the board falls where the board falls.

Could we improve upon Edmunds? Sure. But at what cost? The focus this offseason should be the "O".
