Tomlins Gutsy Call....Today dude had "Black & Gold Balls"

The only thing I wish he had done differently today was not playing turtle ball at the end. Three runs up the middle? I know it burnt out their time outs, but so would have a few first downs.

I think the way our defense was playing had a lot to do with the run calls

"Jennifer Alba?"
"Forget it. He's rolling."

I thought he was going to say Anesten(sp) and no way in hell would I be complaining about her........................................

Oh, I'm not complaining about her either - but Jessica Aniston is even better!!! But Jennifer Lopez...to die for...

You like big butts.............................................. so I've heard

They needed to do something when on second and one they run wide which did not work all night. Maybe Tomlin can watch film and see Mason can make some plays out of the pocket which was collapsing around him for most of the game.

I was going to make a post in this thread, but saw Aniston and Lopez, good god, I'm done.

Thought it was a bad call that worked out. Risk/reward not there unless it doesn't matter or you're looking for your first win or something. Gutsy like sticking your finger in a light socket is gutsy.

It’s not complaining to point out how risky that call was. It was at their own 34 with a 2 point lead. If you don’t get it then the Rams are already in game winning FG range and only need a few yards to make it an easy FG. The steelers offense was struggling so if they lost the lead, there was no guarantee they’d get it back.

If the ball was near the 50, then I can understand the decision more because your defense can stop the Rams from getting in FG range, but not at the 34. At the 34, you are asking your defense to hold the Rams to 0 yards or even a loss on 3 plays to prevent the FG.

I would understand if you had a 4 point lead and Rams needed a TD. I like the defense to stop them. I could also understand going for it if the game was 34-32 and both offense were rolling so you feel good about picking up the 4th down. Tomlin could not have felt confident in picking that up. How could he?

i realize that analytics says it’s correct to go for 4th and short but analytics is just raw numbers. It’s an average of all teams and all short yardage attempts. It doesn’t factor in the actual game flow. It doesn’t know the steeler run game was averaging under 2 per carry.

plus, I only think the play worked because the Rams didn’t think the steelers would actually snap that ball. I know I didn’t. I was expecting the old draw them offsides hard count then punt. I was shocked when they snapped and the Rams defense was slow to react.

the steelers were clearly the better team all game and when you are the better team and you are choking out your opponent, don’t give them any air. Make them earn points the hard way. Rams managed a single scoring drive all game. Possibly giving them field position was crazy.

How dare you, if something works, you can absolutely not criticize it, then you're a whiner. I thought it was dumb to go for it, especially with how well the defense was playing and how much the offense was struggling. If our defense were getting lit up then fine, but we were kicking their *** with our defense.

The playoff game vs Jax, we went for it on fourth, I was on board with that one, they play call was idiotic, but agreed with going for it.

And it begins. On NFL Live Hasselbeck said Tomlin has to be in the discussion for COTY.

Another point on analytics. Analytics says you should ALWAYS go for it on 4th down. This is why the numbers work out. Because you will be stopped some but if you go every single time, you will make more than you are stopped and using 4 plays to get 10 becomes a huge advantage over a whole game. At least on paper.

But when you use the analytics to only go for a 4th down sometimes, or just 1 time, it completely negates the statistical advantage. Now you are just guessing and using analytics as a justification. It’s easy t9 see why coaches love it. It gets them off the hook. Now it seems no matter how risky the call, the coach just says analytics said it was OK and the media laps it up. Oh well, if a spreadsheet says it’s OK then Who are we to argue that it was a bad decision to go for it on 4th and 4 from your own 20 while up 1 with under 2 minutes.

Let's not forget Jennifer Biel

Analytics does not say to always go for it it depends on the yards to go. 4th and long you punt 4th and short you go.

yes but it says you should always go on 4th and I believe 4 or less. That’s the point is it’s not a sometimes thing. It doesn’t factor in any game situation other than down and distance. Once you pick and choose when to use it, it becomes meaningless.

stats can only predict outcomes over time. They can’t predict a single outcome. They can predict a batting average over a season, but not a particular at bat.

if it was that accurate then all these stats people would be raking in millions each week gambling.

They are selling certainty but can only deliver a guess
