Cowher wanted OT Shawn Andrews (speculation) after Rivers was off the board, but apparently Dan Rooney stepped in and "steered the conversation" to Roethlisberger, and the rest is history.
the scuttlebut was that Cowher wanted the OT Shawn Andrews if memory serves. We’ll never know. It would makes sense for the steelers to have Rivers over Ben because most did. It was generally thought that Manning was a can’t miss. Rivers was probably the most ready to play immediately and Ben had the most upside but could also be a bust because he was a small school guy and liked to freelance.
I bet the steelers still would have won the SB under Cowher with Rivers because that steeler team was so strong across the board. It’s the later years when I think the steelers would have been mediocre like the Chargers if they had Rivers instead of Ben. And if the Chargers took Ben, I bet they would have won a SB somewhere with Marty and all that talent. Marty never had a QB like Ben that could actually make others better instead of just steer the ship.

I'm not sure Rivers could've done that, and no way in hell he tackles Harper.

The Steelers still would have won 1-2 Superbowls with Rivers.
People give a lot of **** toward Cowher for preferring Rivers over Ben, but it was not like he preferred Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning. Not even close.
There is a reason why Manning wouldn't go to SD. He knew how horribly ran they were. I said it a million times. There are only a few franchises in the NFL with the rest just being football teams. Rivers may have been a great QB somewhere else but he wasn't going to be one there. Just like going to the clowns or bungles. You may have some good stats but you're not sniffing a SB.
I've never looked that up, the one everyone brings up is the one after the 05 playoff games. Brady screams at player and coaches on the sidelines as well.
Not sure I am buying. One feeling I have had for a long time is chargers know how to draft talent. We talk about the Steelers doing less with more. But perhaps no team personifies that feeling more than the chargers. **** even in my pickems they have been the most consistent inconsistent team. Rivers is a great fantasy football QB but not sure I am going to pin him with anything more than that.Archie Manning was a really good talent stuck on a bum team his whole career he very well could have been a hof type had he gone to a real team...... getting to the hall of fame is about what did happen, not the what if’s .... archie went to a crappy team... it happens... so did rivers... though the chargers did have teams that were pretty solid several years

We are talking about a team that fired the coach after a 14-2 season because the GM wanted to hire his butt buddy. Norv Turner proceeded to destroy the team. They finally drafted great defensive players but Rivers is past his prime. I don't see him getting in the Hall unless they have a miracle year.
Cowher wanted Rivers over Ben, didn't he?

What I remember about the 2004 draft was the discussion on this board. After a hugely disappointing season at 6-10 the Steeler Nation were demanding a QB upgrade from Tommy M. The discussion started in December and did not let up,with many opinions. In the early months Rivers was not in the discussion by many experts to be even a first rounder. Many of us were praying that he would drop to us in the second round. A lot were worried about his quirky delivery, worried he would get a lot of slapped down passes. Plus he was a bit of a slug.
Many experts thought we would draft the RB from Oregon,Steven Jackson. The consensus across the board of course was Manning #1. Rivers started moving up the board quickly as the media concentrated on him,and all of a sudden most here were hoping he would even be there at 11. Big Ben wasn’t even in the discussion, because we all knew he would be top 10. Personally if I remember correctly,if there were no QBs available I wanted Jackson a big strong back.
We should all be thankful to the Chargers and the Giants.........this board, along with all Steeler fans erupted when Ben fell to 11.
And the rest is history!
This is what I remember as well. I never thought Ben would be there at 11. How could the clowns let a 6'5 QB with a rocket arm who played in Ohio drop to their rivals? Oh yes, they are a horribly run team with boneheads for a FO. I believe that's the year they picked the "Soldier" at TE.
