Philip Rivers is a Loser and Should not be a Hall of Famer

Cowher wanted OT Shawn Andrews (speculation) after Rivers was off the board, but apparently Dan Rooney stepped in and "steered the conversation" to Roethlisberger, and the rest is history.

the scuttlebut was that Cowher wanted the OT Shawn Andrews if memory serves. We’ll never know. It would makes sense for the steelers to have Rivers over Ben because most did. It was generally thought that Manning was a can’t miss. Rivers was probably the most ready to play immediately and Ben had the most upside but could also be a bust because he was a small school guy and liked to freelance.

I bet the steelers still would have won the SB under Cowher with Rivers because that steeler team was so strong across the board. It’s the later years when I think the steelers would have been mediocre like the Chargers if they had Rivers instead of Ben. And if the Chargers took Ben, I bet they would have won a SB somewhere with Marty and all that talent. Marty never had a QB like Ben that could actually make others better instead of just steer the ship.

I don't know, Ben had alot of 4th qtr comebacks and game winning drives early on, I'm not sure Rivers could've done that, and no way in hell he tackles Harper.

I believe it was the Steelers History DVD set, Rooney said he didn't force Cowher to take Ben, he made sure Ben was in the conversation. Somewhere I read a quote from Cowher saying "we tried to win a Super Bowl for many years with a strong defense and running game and it wouldn't work without that QB"

For the record, from the same DVD set Chuck Noll did not want Franco, he wanted Robert Newhouse (I think was the name).

The Steelers still would have won 1-2 Superbowls with Rivers.

People give a lot of **** toward Cowher for preferring Rivers over Ben, but it was not like he preferred Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning. Not even close.

There is a reason why Manning wouldn't go to SD. He knew how horribly ran they were. I said it a million times. There are only a few franchises in the NFL with the rest just being football teams. Rivers may have been a great QB somewhere else but he wasn't going to be one there. Just like going to the clowns or bungles. You may have some good stats but you're not sniffing a SB.

What if SD stuck with Drew Brees instead of drafting Rivers?

Better yet, what if Nick Saban chose to sign Brees instead of Dante Culpepper for the Dolphins?

Archie Manning was a really good talent stuck on a bum team his whole career he very well could have been a hof type had he gone to a real team...... getting to the hall of fame is about what did happen, not the what if’s .... archie went to a crappy team... it happens... so did rivers... though the chargers did have teams that were pretty solid several years

Rivers will paddle his way to the Hall

I've never looked that up, the one everyone brings up is the one after the 05 playoff games. Brady screams at player and coaches on the sidelines as well.

I googled it and now they have his results filtered to GOAT talk and the occasional sexual assault tidbit. Duckduckgo had results in the top five. There were videos back in the 00's that showed a compilation of him lifting his arms in a what gives motion with that pained, constipated look on his face whenever a teammate didnt play up to his standards. It was embarrassing to himself and his team.

Not sure I am buying. One feeling I have had for a long time is chargers know how to draft talent. We talk about the Steelers doing less with more. But perhaps no team personifies that feeling more than the chargers. **** even in my pickems they have been the most consistent inconsistent team. Rivers is a great fantasy football QB but not sure I am going to pin him with anything more than that.

One big factor in the comparison is that Archie played when there was no Free Agency. The teamed owned your rights until they decided to let you go. Holding out was the only deterrence for players then.

Rivers could have opted for FA after his rookie contract (before the rookie cap numbers) ended, but didn’t. It seems the Spanos ownership in general isn’t highly regarded amongst the owners. And Archie has known a lot of the owners in the NFL.

We are talking about a team that fired the coach after a 14-2 season because the GM wanted to hire his butt buddy. Norv Turner proceeded to destroy the team. They finally drafted great defensive players but Rivers is past his prime. I don't see him getting in the Hall unless they have a miracle year.

The only issue is that the media loves him... again in this modern era of the nfl there is a lump of hof worthy qbs...

Peyton brady and brees will all easily get in barring a brady cheats scandal... lol
Rodgers is a media darling and will breeze in
Then you have the 04 QB class... Eli gets in cause he played in New York, beat the *twice and is a manning
Ben has been to three superbowls and has a historically great record...

Rivers isn’t going to have any superbowls but his stats will look very similar to bens except that due to ben missing so much time, rivers will have more passing yards

I assure you that while all those other qbs get in first, he will eventually weasel his way in...

The one worry i have is that rivers gets fed up and calls it quits this offseason and is eligible first so they slide him in then ben is the last to retire and ultimately they try to make ben wait cause too many from this era are in... like lets say ben plays three more seasons and brees and brady are done in two.. eli might already be out... rodgers is only one year younger than ben... ben could easily hang on and be the last one standing, then get short sticked when tge media complains too many from this era are in

Cowher wanted Rivers over Ben, didn't he?

There were conversation in many directions but Cowher didn't have a choice because rivers was long gone. You do know that Cowher took BEN on a rookie journey that will never be matched says for win / loss accounts. That statement "rivers over Ben" has very little meaning and nothing in proving Cowher wrong in any measure. Kind of like getting a white '67 Mustang fastback but wanting a red one instead. Both perform very well. Cowher's journey with Ben speaks for it's self .

Rivers has been especially douchy and even inappropriately aggressive lately. He must be feeling that his window of opportunity is closing fast.

What I remember about the 2004 draft was the discussion on this board. After a hugely disappointing season at 6-10 the Steeler Nation were demanding a QB upgrade from Tommy M. The discussion started in December and did not let up,with many opinions. In the early months Rivers was not in the discussion by many experts to be even a first rounder. Many of us were praying that he would drop to us in the second round. A lot were worried about his quirky delivery, worried he would get a lot of slapped down passes. Plus he was a bit of a slug.

Many experts thought we would draft the RB from Oregon,Steven Jackson. The consensus across the board of course was Manning #1. Rivers started moving up the board quickly as the media concentrated on him,and all of a sudden most here were hoping he would even be there at 11. Big Ben wasn’t even in the discussion, because we all knew he would be top 10. Personally if I remember correctly,if there were no QBs available I wanted Jackson a big strong back.

We should all be thankful to the Chargers and the Giants.........this board, along with all Steeler fans erupted when Ben fell to 11.
And the rest is history!

This is what I remember as well. I never thought Ben would be there at 11. How could the clowns let a 6'5 QB with a rocket arm who played in Ohio drop to their rivals? Oh yes, they are a horribly run team with boneheads for a FO. I believe that's the year they picked the "Soldier" at TE.

Soldj'A just pleaded down to some nasty chyt and our 6'5" QB will be vying for a SB championship next season !

I remembering reading everything I could on Ben at the time and then Maddox started but I was thinking NOT for long. Cowher never hesitated in getting BEN ROETHLISBERGER, handled his start very well and kept some dicipline involved. Ben couldn't have had a better coach at the star of his career. A ready made SB contender in a team and a coach that got his final piece of the puzzle in return.

Wow, I sure don't remember all this. what I do remember is Cowher wanted OL Shane Andrews out of Arkansas. why because the Offensive line was horrible in 2003. they had to bring in one RT on running downs and another RT for passing downs. any yards Bettis got was because of how good he really was. it was Dan that said he was not going to let the Marino mistake happen again.
