Round 3 Pick Diontae Johnson

I never said it was a huge conspiracy. But lets think about it, who is a better trading partner for NE with Metcalf (Who could be David Boston or Megatron). Seattle or Pittsburgh.
Oh and at this point I don't dislike Mike Tomlin. At this point as a coach, not as a person, I ****** hate him.

You need a buddy...

Yes, but the team needs a LOLB that can end the game with a pass rush in the 4th quarter. They have a guy on the right already who can do that - Watt. They have two or three good DL who can rush the passer.

But that LOLB spot is just a weakness that could have been addressed. Put Winovich in the game to rush the passer, not cover. Stop with a complicated zone blitz that requires the LOLB'er to cover a WR, and let pass rushers, I don't know, RUSH THE PASSER.

Yeah, but one is a DL and the other is a 233 lb. edge rusher who really struggled against NFL-quality linemen in the Senior Bowl.

Winovich can rush the passer in the NFL. He did so against some quality offensive linemen in the Big 10 and bowl games. He improves the pass rush right away.

These two issues are related. The coverage is an issue a lot of times because on 3rd and 14, the opposing QB has all freaking day back there. One more solid pass rusher ends that.

I think Bush upgrades pass coverage in the middle of the field due to his explosiveness and speed. Put another pass rusher like Winovich on the field, and let him, Watt, Heyward, Tuitt go after the passer. Those 4 will generate pass rush. If the RB stays in to block, Bush can then attack the pocket as well.

Plays I saw him blitz he looked like a missile. I didn't touch on this with evals,But it very much is a plus to add to his lists of attractive attributes.

Question: For how wonderful the Steelers' reputation is for drafting receivers, how well have their last three taken in the third round panned out?

2015: Sammie Coates -- 29 career catches, including 1 for 12 yards in his 12 games with the Texans in 2018.
2014: Dri Archer -- 7 career catches, out of the league after 2 horrendous seasons.
2013: Markus Wheaton -- 110 career catches, including a grand total of 7 since 2016.

Sure, prior to that, Manny Sanders and Mike Wallace were good third round picks, which should probably be expected from people who "evaluate college football players for a living," right?

Tired of hearing how great the Steelers are with picking wideouts. Seems to me like it's a ******* crapshoot.

Some fans like the pick, some don't. It's a message board. Let me know when an NFL team gives two ***** about any of our opinions.

I suggest you look at Slash's post below...

Saw this on Universe..

The stats look awfully close to me...

Did you watch any film (not highlights) on DK Metcalf??? I've seen the kid play over the past 3 years and HE ONLY RUNS THREE ROUTES. His hips are stiff and he turns like an aircraft carrier in the ocean. But you like his straight line speed - sobeit...

#stopyapouting

We had a "small" but real fast guy who had straight line speed but got tripped by grass blades........ He did go onto set a WORLDS record right here at STEELERNATION.COM................... Most pages to a post............

Salute the nation

I wanted Winovich too ST. Pretty surprised they had Johnson rated as BPA over him (I think that's bull, they were filling a need).

But it's done now and hopefully Adeniyi beomes that pass-rusher we need in the 4th quarter.

I think I wanted Winovich more because he's a local guy and wanted to be a Steeler as oppose to his play on the field. Butler also still really believes Dupree is gonna be a good player.

Fixed it for you, you accidentally put a RB on that list of 3rd round WRs. And before you try to say they drafted him to play WR, he spent the whole season on the RB depth chart and never appeared on the WR depth chart in 2014.

Just to clarify.....we already have a pretty good LOLB in Watt. I think you are commenting on the ROLB spot.

The Steelers did upgrade their pass rush. That's one of the things Bush excels at. Not sure Winovich will be any better than Dupree. Their combines are very similar.
Steelers seem to be moving to getting pressure from everywhere, rather than relying just on OLB's. They have strengthened the secondary, so they should start adding
some coverage sacks, which have been rare the last few years.

I like this pick. I read about Johnson on NFL Draft Network. I watched his game tape against Miami Fla., he ate them up and his QB this year was awful and ran almost every time his first read was covered. As for Hakeem Butler, the Steelers were never taking this guy. He dropped 12 passes last year, 12 for a 16.9% drop rate. Sure his highlight reel looks good but that is a boatload of drops.

I think the Steelers have changed their philosophy in how they rate receivers and are now avoiding those tall, clumsy receivers in favor of more disciplined and fluid receivers. They've probably had enough of the Sweed and Bryant types.

Yep, and I like Winovich, he has potential but he has a lot of work to do. Athletically he's solid but he needs to work on his technique shaking off tackles and taking the right path to the QB. Athletically you can be fast but that does you no good if you fly past the QB and miss him by 5 feet. I'm not sure he would've helped us immediately and would be competing with guys like Ola. From the Steelers standpoint Johnson was a safer pick who could help immediately in the # 3 or 4 WR spot.

They started that way last year, and then flipped back mid-season. Watt generally lines up weak side, over the left tackle.

I think you are confusing the 2017 lineups Steeltime. Porter made the decision to flip TJ and Bud after 2017 season. Bud played against the LT (ROLB) in 2018 and TJ has the strong side (LOLB). Chickillo backed up both until Adeniyi came off of IR. He then rotated with Chickillo.

The Steelers also upgraded their pass rush by hopefully having ILB's cover TE's and RB's coming out of the backfield instead of sending Watt and Dupree into coverage on WR's. We need to get away with that damn 2 DL set and having LB's covering WR's (especially when they line up on the WR on the outside). That **** doesn't work. Hopefully having speed in the middle of the field again will eliminate some of that ****. Then again, Tomlin is still running the D.

the fact Tomlin supposedly decovered this guy has me worried. i remember him waxing on about Ziggy, jones, on and on... i remember them saying they were looking to trade up to get Sanchez! well wait and see and if johnson turns out to be a good pick.. awesome! but if not its time someone starts answering for these ****** picks. geez working the steeler front office is like working for the government. you can't swing a dead cat and not hit someones relative in the head and no one is responsible for anything. time to fire those responsible for failures in the draft!

Ahh, you sir, are correct.

I need to stop drinking so much. Or need to drink more. I forget because of ... well, the drinking.

The stats for the two can be close. What set AB apart was his work ethic. He outworked everyone to get his opportunity and he became great. Its a shame that he became a CTE headcase after the Burfict hit but whatever.

Johnson can't be expected to replicate anything AB did for his rookie year. He needs to make the roster and hope he can see the field here and there.

It was a blast reading these comments about a man that probably no one making the comments had actually seen play. Man, this pick was pretty damn unpopular....

We've now had 7 games to actually watch this shifty receiver, with great hands & veteran route running skills...He definitely has football speed as he displayed last night

Now that we've seen him actually play, what say ye about this pick?
